Part 53

Once the Guptas left, again there was a change of routine in the Mallik household. A couple of days later Ani had his first course of vaccination. For the next two days he was running temperature and was very cranky. He wanted to be in his mama's arms all the time. If he was put in the cradle, he would start crying. If akka picked him, he wouldn't be happy and would keep crying till his mama picked him. So Riddhima set about her morning duties carrying him.

Even after he got better, being carried felt nice. So he smartly bullied his mama to pick him up by crying. Whereas, if he saw his dad around, he would smile at him. Armaan could never resist his smile. But if he spent time playing with him in the mornings, he had to inevitably rush through his breakfast. Akshat didn't like it one bit that Ani was permanently in his mama's or dad's arms. Normally his mother would button his shirt, comb his hair, but with the baby in her arms she let him do all the things by himself.

His halfyearly exams began. When his mama sat with him to take up his studies, Ani never allowed her to do so in peace. Either he was hungry, or he wet himself or sometimes simply cried. Akshat noticed that his mama danced to his little brother's tunes. She never scolded him.

One morning as he was getting ready for school, he noticed that one button of his school uniform had fallen off. When he asked his mama to stitch it, she was feeding Ani. She asked him to take it to Athai, but she couldn't threadle the needle, as she couldn't see clearly. If he waited for his mama to finish feeding and then stitch, he would be late. So his mama asked him to wear another shirt, but that wasn't ironed. Finally he ended up wearing the previous day's shirt, all because of his brother. He was very upset about it and left for school without bidding his mama bye.

Riddhima was very hurt by his behaviour and spoke about it to Armaan during lunch.

A: Riddhima, just because you have another baby, Akshat hasn't aged overnight. He still wants you to do all that you were doing for him before Ani was born.

R: But Armaan, during my morning sickness he was so co-operative. Now why can't he behave like that. He's six months older now.

A: Then, he could see that his mama was not well and didn't want to trouble her. But now he feels she's ignoring him and giving more attention to his brother. That doesn't go well with him.

R: This little fellow is a real rascal. He throws all tantrums only early in the morning. After you are all gone and things settle down, he's an angel. Look how sweetly he's sleeping now.

When Akshat came home that evening he was in tears. Riddhima got worried. But try as she might, he wasn't prepared to tell her anything. He just went into his room and locked it. After half an hour of sweet-talking him and trying to get him out, she lost her temper. She threatened that if he didn't come out that very minute, she wasn't going to talk to him at all. That was the last straw for him. He opened the door and yelled at her saying "Haan mujhe pata hai aap ab mujse bilkul pyaar nahi karti. Aap sirf Ani se pyaar karti ho. Isliye aap mujse baat bhi karna nahi chahti ho." And again slammed the door shut.

Riddhima felt helpless. She was sorry for him but at the same time angry too. Finally she called Armaan and asked him to talk to Akshat on the phone. When kaka went to call Akshat to take his dad's call, he didn't reply to the knocks. They were all worried. Riddhima went outside and saw through the window that he had fallen asleep. She started crying because he may be hungry. When Armaan came home a few minutes later, he saw her sitting on the bed crying and Ani crying in his cradle.

He picked up the baby and went near her. "I'm tired, I'm fed up. I don't know what to do," she shouted and continued crying. He put his free arm around her and pulled her into a hug. "Ab bachchon ke saath tum bhi rone lagi, to main kya karon?" he asked. He kissed her and wiped her tears. Come let's go and talk to Akshat. He handed Ani to Akka and asked her to take him outside for a few minutes.

He stood outside Akshat's room and tapped the door and called out to him. When he didn't answer, he went outside and called out through the window. Akshat woke up and saw his dad. He opened the door at once and ran outside straight to his dad.

Armaan came in carrying Akshat in his arms. He made him sit on his lap and asked Riddhima to sit beside him. He asked Akshat to tell him why he was angry. Akshat narrated all that had happened in the morning and Riddhima complained about how he had gone to school without saying bye to her. Then Akshat told him how he had made silly mistakes in his maths paper and got two sums wrong. For that also he blamed his mama as she had not taught him those types of sums. His grouse was that she was only bothered about Ani all the time and didn't care about him anymore.

Hearing his accusations Riddhima couldn't control her tears so she left from there. Armaan explained to Akshat that all small children totally depended on their mother for everything as they couldn't do anything by themselves. As a baby, he had also been like that and till he was six years old, his mama had taken of each and every need of his as he was her only child. Now she had to take care of both of them simultaneously. Ani was still too small to understand anything. He couldn't talk or tell her when he was hungry, or in pain. She couldn't let the baby keep crying as it would make the baby sick. Whereas Akshat could tell her his problems and if not she someone else could handle his work. And Akshat being a smart child, she was confident he could take care of most of his needs himself, thereby reducing some of her work. That is why she attended to Ani's needs first. But that didn't mean she loved Ani more.

Then Armaan gave him an option. If Akshat still felt that his mama loved Ani more, they would send Ani away from the house. Did he want Ani to be given to some other family? At once Akshat said "no". Then Armaan explained about how hurt his mother had been by his actions and was now weeping. If she didn't love him, why would she bother?

Akshat felt bad for putting his mama through so much trouble. He went and kissed her saying "Maine aap ka dil dukhaya na, isliye God ne mujhe punish kiya aur mere sums wrong ho gaye." She hugged him tight and said "Nahi beta, it's ok. Thode se marks kum honge to kya hua? Class mein first aana hi important nahi hai. Tum itne pyaare ho, itne understanding ho, wahi important hai. Aur ek cheez hamesha yaad rakhna, in this whole world mama loves you the most." Both father and son kissed her turn by turn and finally made her smile.

Just then akka walked in with Ani crying as usual. Armaan took him from her and pretended to spank him for causing so much problem. At once Akshat held his hand and said "Nahi dad usey mat maro, woh bahut chota hai." Armaan gave the baby to him and said, "Theek hai, tum keh rahe ho is liye main isey chod raha hoon, nahi to iski pitaai karne wala tha."

Akshat kissed the baby and saying "tumhe mama ke paas jana hai na?" gave him to his mama. As soon as he was in his mama's arms, Ani started smiling.

A: Nautanki mein to isne apne baap ko bhi peeche chod diya hai.

All of them started laughing.

A: Ok, how about a nice long drive?

Ak: Yeess. Mere exams bhi khatam go gaye.

"Chalo dus minute mein sab log tayyar ho jao aur is shaitaan ko main tayyar karta hoon," Armaan said beckoning to Ani. But Riddhima said "Let me feed him first." Armaan first made Akshat have his milk. While he did that, Armaan cut various fruits. He took Akshat and the plateful of cut fruits to Riddhima's room and kept feeding a piece to each of them and himself, till the plate was empty. Then he got Akshat washed and dressed and himself too. By then Riddhima had finished feeding the baby, but Ani had fallen asleep. So he asked Riddhima to get ready, while he just put on a diaper for Ani and wrapped him up comfortably in a baby blanket.

When armaan had been to Kochi the previous time he had bought a car seat for Ani.

He buckled him in it, in the back seat and Akshat sat next to him. When Riddhima asked him "Where are we going?" he said "wait and watch." He drove to 'Pothamedu' view point. As they were nearing it Riddhima understood where he was taking her, and gave him a knowing smile.

Seeing Akshat admiring the view around Armaan whispered in her ears, "haste hue achchi lagti ho. Gussey mein bahut buri dikhthi ho" and parked the car. She hit him playfully on his shoulder and jumped out of the car like a small baby. Akshat followed suite. Armaan came out of the car, but stood next to it only as Ani was still sleeping. Riddhima held Akshat's hand and both of them walked around a bit. Then they went and sat on the rock. Armaan was happy to see the serene look on her face. She looked so relaxed and content. She was too tied down to the house and really needed a break. He would ensure that she got out of the house from time to time.

Akshat came to him and said, "mama keh rahi hai aap Ani ko lekar wahin aajao". So he picked up Ani and walked towards her. When she held out her hand to hold him he shook his head and motioned that it was ok. Soon the sun began to set and they stood mesmerised watching the beauty of it. She came close to him, hugged his waist, and put her head on his shoulder. Then it started getting chilly so Armaan asked them to get back to the car.

Armaan tucked Ani in the car seat and closed the door after Akshat got in. When he was walking to the driver seat from behind the car, Riddhima came in front of him. When he raised his eyebrows questioningly, she hugged him saying "Thank you for bringing me here. It has really calmed me. Thankyou for understanding and taking care of my needs so much." When there was no reply from him she looked up to see him looking around.

A: Let's continue this later in our bedroom.

She felt embarassed and walked to her seat. He followed her and while fastening her seat belt, gave her a fleeting kiss on her cheeks.

Ak: Chalo na dad. Kahan reh gaye the aap dono?

Armaan got into the driving seat and buckled his seat belt.

Ak: Ab hum kahan jaa rahe hain?

A: Ghar.

Ak: Itne jaldi?

Seeing his disappointed face Armaan asked "Phir kahan jaana chahte ho?"

Ak: Icecream khane chale?

A: Theek hai chalo.

Armaan pulled her hand and when she looked up he mouthed the words "love you" soundlessly. Then he put her hand on the gear and his hand over hers. She smiled coyly and turned to see if Akshat was watching them, but he was looking out of the window.

At the icecream parlour, Riddhima sat with Ani while Armaan walked to the counter with Akshat who wanted fresh mango flavour. Armaan got Riddhima her favourite choco-chip and roasted almond for himself.

R: Arrey mere liye kyun laaye ho? You know I can't eat icecreams.

A: why?

R: What if Ani catches cold?

A: Ek din khane se kuch nahi hoga.

Finally after a lot of persuasion from both father and son, she had it. By now the little hero was also awake and looking all around and at the three of them licking at their cones. Armaan offered him a lick and Riddhima at once pushed his had away saying "are you mad? What is he catches cold?"

A: The way he's staring at us we are all going to end up with stomach ache for not sharing it with him.

On the way home Armaan stopped at a pharmacy and got out. When Akshat tried to get out, Armaan stopped him saying, "I'll be back in a minute." When he was back Riddhima asked him "kya lene gaye the?"

A: some medicine for a patient.

Then he changed the topic, asking Akshat if he had a holiday the next day. Then chit chatting about this and that, by the time the family reached home they were in good spirits. Akka was glad to see Riddhima smiling and relaxed.

Luckily for them, that night both their sons slept off quickly without much fuss. As they both lay on the bed, Riddhima moved towards Armaan and kissed him. He just bid her "good-night" and shut his eyes.

She just turned over to the other side and pretended to sleep. He smiled and peeping over her asked "Why did you turn the other side?" When she didn't reply he continued pestering her saying "Lagta hai mood nahi hai. It's ok. Mere itne khoshish karne ke baad bhi'....."

R: Bus, bus, nautanki karne ki zaroorat nahi.

A: To tumne mujhe jagaya kyon nahi?

R: Mujhe kya pata ke tum nautanki kar rahe ho. I thought tumhara mood nahi hai.

A:If that was so, I wouldn't have stopped at the pharmacy.

She turned around immediately and asked "You stopped at the pharmacy to buy...." Too shy to continue she moved close and hid her face in his neck. Even in the dark he could see the blush creeping up her cheeks and started laughing. Then he held her face between his palms and kissed her passionately.
