Part 5

Muskaan quickly sat in her car, and put it into ignition as she raced towards the hospital. Yesterday's exhaustion had made her sleep in, and now she was going to make it just in time if she sped all the way.

Cursing under her breath, Muskaan honked and swerved and finally reached the parking lot of the hospital. Parking into her parking space, Muskaan was about to step out and run towards the lifts when she heard the clicking of shoes in the quiet parking lot.

She wasn't sure what it was that made her look around for the source of noise, nor was she sure why she stayed in the car while she tried to find where the person was. But she was glad she did what she did. Because not even two cars away from her car, she saw him walking briskly towards the lift, a file tucked under his arm, his shirt tucked neatly into his pants, his hair perfectly combed and his hazel eyes still striking.

Sucking in a breath, Muskaan froze. She stared at him as he came closer towards her car. Instinct kicked in, and Muskaan quickly ducked under her wheel, and quickly flattened her hair by placing a hand over it. Barely breathing to not make any noise, Muskaan closed her eyes and kept still till she heard him passing by her car and walking further away from her.

Slowly Muskaan glanced up from her position, and saw that he had rushed towards the lift and stepped into it. Giving out a sigh of relief, Muskaan put a hand on her chest to calm herself down.

Remember what you promised yourself. Don't let this affect you so much.

Muskaan's eyes fell on her watch and she swore loudly as she realised she was going to be 5 minutes late. Quickly jumping out of the car, Muskaan grabbed her purse and files, locked the car and ran towards the lifts.

Quickly walking towards the Nurse Station, Muskaan slipped into her lab coat and went over the duties she had to assign in her head. Seeing her interns gathered there, joking and laughing around, she felt a tug at her heart as she remembered her own intern days at this hospital.

Going and standing in front of them, Muskaan quickly took out sheet of paper with the day's duties, and asked her interns to follow her to do rounds in the hospital.

********

Going over the different case reports, Muskaan continued to make notes of the different diseases and symptoms in a different notebook.

Leaning against the window, Muskaan closed her eyes as she gave out a sigh. There hadn't been a single surgery assigned to her today so she had decided to do some reading and catch up on a few reports.

Massaging her neck, Muskaan slowly opened her eyes and looked around her. It was a cozy place, closer to the terrace, and hardly anyone came here because it was away from the action and the cafeteria. She couldn't remember how she had stumbled across it, but the moment she had, she had fallen in love with it. There were some nooks and corners in Sanjeevani that hardly anyone knew about. She had been here for so long, and it hadn't been until last year that she discovered this place.

Looking back at the case reports, Muskaan crossed her legs and got into a comfortable position as she once again started to take notes. She was just about halfway through her third case report, when she heard footsteps coming closer to her.

Stiffening, Muskaan stopped writing as she glared at the page in front of her. She wasn't sure who it was, but she wasn't interested in finding out either. She wanted to be alone and left to her own thoughts, rather than having people coming to her constantly.

She continued to stare at the paper in front of her, refusing to acknowledge the presence of another person. She refused to look up when the person sighed and sat next to her, their back resting against the window.

Maybe if she continued to ignore them, they would go away. But she knew that it had to be one of her friends. They probably knew she was by herself and decided to check on her to make sure she hadn't done anything to punish herself.

"Muskaan? Muskaan, babe! Open the door please!"

Muskaan could hear the distinct shout of Nikita on the door, but she couldn't summon the energy to reply, or to do as she was asked.

Blinking slowly, Muskaan stared at the wall opposite her. She was hugging a pillow tightly, her body in a fetal position, as she took in slow breaths, breathing in Rahul's scent.

Closing her eyes, Muskaan snuggled closer to the pillow, her hair in a disarray, as she wrapped her legs around it, and rested her head on it. It smelt exactly like him. It made her feel as though she was with him right now. A smile touched the corner of her lips as she closed her eyes and delved into Rahul's memories.

"Muskaan! Muskaan, if you don't open right now, I am breaking the door!" She heard Atul shout out, as the banging became more urgent.

Frowning, Muskaan closed her eyes tightly, trying to fade out the insistent banging out into the background.

She could still hear them banging, and she could feel a headache approaching. Frowning deeply, Muskaan gave a small groan as the headache became worse. It almost seemed synchronized with the banging of the door. Whenever the banging on the door occurred, her head throbbed.

Slowly lifting up a hand, Muskaan brought it to her forehead and tried massaging the pain away. But the shouting and the kicking at the door just made it worse.

She wanted to scream at them to go away. To leave her alone, to let her be with his scent. But she didn't have the energy to do so. She couldn't even remember how long she had laid in her bed reminiscing and tearing up at his memories, but she knew that all she needed was time to sort herself out.

But where would she begin? How would she begin to sort herself, when she had never experienced a pain so strong. She didn't know how to start putting the pieces of her heart together, and that was tearing her up on the inside.

What was she going to do?

Lying in bed, thinking of her failing life seemed like a good idea, and that is what she was trying to do. But her friends weren't even going to let her do that in peace.

Suddenly a loud bang and some scuffling of feet brought her attention back to the situation at hand. Someone had broken in. She knew it was Atul, but she found she couldn't care less about him finding her in such a shocking state.

All she wanted was to wallow in her own misery.

She felt a hand on her shoulder, as a shadow crossed her face. She didn't look up and continued to stare past him, at the wall. The hand became more firm, as it tried shaking some life into Muskaan. But Muskaan found she couldn't reply back. It was too exhausting to explain why she was behaving the way she was. They were doctors, they will figure it out for themselves. She hoped that they would leave her alone.

Panic came inside of her when Atul tried to pick her up and take her away from the pillow she was clutching. He was taking her away from the only thing left of him..his scent. She tried fighting him off, tried holding onto the pillow, but Atul wouldn't give up.

"No, no, no, NO!!" Muskaan shouted, as she tried clutching the pillow, but Atul tried prying it off her hands.

"Muskaan, let it go" Atul spoke calmly, yet in a firm voice. Her eyes finally met his, and she saw the worry and concern in his eyes. She saw the a hint of anger and frustration within the depth of his chcolate orbs.

Rahul's eyes had been striking hazel. Oh how she wished she was looking into his eyes at the moment. She wished it was him she was clutching, not the pillow. Tears once more took over her, and Muskaan found that her grip on the pillow started to loosen.

This time the tears weren't the silent ones, they came from the depth of her chest, taking out every frustration and betrayal, she felt, along with it. It felt like her chest was being split open and the feelings were just pouring out. Why did he leave her?

Collapsing against Atul, Muskaan sobbed loudly as she helplessly came to realize that Rahul had truly gone forever. And there was nothing she could do. He was never coming back.

Her love had abandoned her...

She felt the warmth of the body sitting next to her. It was oddly comforting, and it made Muskaan's heart twist with guilt and pain. Guilt at the way she was distancing herself from her friends, and pain at the situation at hand.

Sighing, Muskaan continued to write, hoping that the person would go away so she wouldn't have another awkward conversation about her feelings. She just couldn't bring herself to voice out the turmoil within her, she felt uncomfortable exposing herself in this manner, and she wasn't sure how she expected her friends to react to how she was trying to handle him coming back.

Blinking rapidly, Muskaan took a few slow and deep breaths to calm her racing heart and to keep her emotions in check. She had already cried so many times, she wasn't sure if she could do it again.

She had promised herself to move on. To show him that she didn't care. But it was too hard. Harder than she ever deemed possible.

She felt a hand on her arm. She immediately stilled her writing hand, and stiffened under the touch. Still not moving her gaze from the paper, Muskaan waited for the person to speak.

"Muskaan?" Atul spoke.

Muskaan closed her eyes slowly. She should have known it was him. There were only two people who had seen her that day a few days after he had left. When she had been clutching the pillow, refusing to let go.

She took in another deep breath, and she could feel the clenching and the unclenching of her throat. The slight burning in her chest and behind her eyelids. She could feel the emotions starting to resurface, and Muskaan wanted to run once again. She wanted to wallow in her own misery, so people won't have to see the old Muskaan.

Sub-consciously, Muskaan placed a hand on her stomach, and took in a few more calming breaths. She felt his hand soothing her, as he rubbed circles on her back, and Muskaan felt her emotions go in another flurry.

Why were the trying to sympathise and calm her down? Didn't they realize that their concern was making it harder for her to move on?

Muskaan opened her eyes and looked at Atul, who looked back at her with concern in his eyes.

"I am fine" Muskaan lied. She felt anything but fine, but if she had to move on,then lying was the first step to do so.

Atul shook his head silently in denial, and pulled her into a hug.

Muskaan stiffened once more, before slowly relaxing int the hug. She should have known that he wouldn't have believed her. She should have known that he would have comforted her till he was sure that she knew that he was behind her in each step, supporting her, and refusing to let her fall into another dark phase of life.

She should have known that Atul, despite being carefree and childish, was the most sensible and sensitive person when it came to serious situations. That's what made him such a good friend, and an event better pediatrician.

Sniffing, Muskaan broke away from the hug, and gave him a huge smile, even though it didn't exactly touch her eyes.

"I am fine. Really." Muskaan tried her most convincing voice, and gave him another smile as he looked at her skeptically.

Nodding, Atul accepted what Muskaan was saying and decided not to push her. Muskaan was thankful that Atul wasn't going to keep pushing her till she spilt her guts out to him. Because she knew that if she broke down once again, she'll find it very hard to get back up.

"Need help with your work?" Atul offered, to get her mind off him.

Muskaan grinned and nodded, "Yes please. I don't get most of it"

And so for the next hour, the friends sat there helping each other, helping the new Muskaan resurface and try and forget him.

Hope you enjoyed the part! Please comment! :)

Hello everyone! So finally finished Uni exams and now i am hoping and praying that I did well! *fingers crossed* Anyway, I have a lot of family and friends visiting us, and so mum's been stressed trying to organise everything, and I have been helping her. Which is why this update is kinda short and delayed. I know that it is progressing kinda slowly, and I have received a few PMs, where people have wanted me to rush to the confrontation between Rahul and Muskaan. But, honestly speaking, I want to take my time 😆

I want to build it up, and slowly reveal the secrets, etc. Another thing, I felt that it wasn't justified in the show how Rahul affected just Muskaan. Sure, she was the closest, but he was a good friend to everyone, which is why I want to take my time showing everyone's reactions and anger 😳
going to be Muskaan-central. I think I mentioned it before, the other characters are going to be mentioned briefly, however this story is mostly about the effect of the other characters on Muskaan and Rahul's life. Just imagine that you are Muskaan, and you are living her life in this story 😛You all are wonderful readers (the ones who review and the ones who don't 😊)
Anyway that's a massive author's note. I am going to go ahead and reply now 😃

Rapunzzel : Aww thank you! glad you liked the part! Yeah, Muskaan is going through a bit. But don't worry, she's a fighter 😊 Thanks for reviewing!

NiksAngel : Glad you liked the part! I know! I am sorry about the infrequent updates. But I'd rather give a part which stays true to the story and characters than a whip-lash of a part which I am not happy with 😊. Hope you understand! I will try and update as quickly as possible though!
Thanks for reviewing!

vj2102 : Another part coming right up 😊

Part 6

Muskaan continued to finish off the reports and lost herself in the amount of work she had to catch up on. Denying the books for the past few months had not helped in the slightest, and Muskaan found herself getting tired and grumpy as she turned another page to look at how a vasectomy could be performed quickly and efficiently. You would think a simple procedure like that would have only one way of performing it, but some creative surgeons had devised new methods, and Muskaan had to be informed of all in case some emergency demanded it.

Rubbing the back of her neck Muskaan found herself thinking back to how Atul had spend a good chunk of his break reading over her reports, correcting her and making her understand some procedures. She felt a small smile touching at the corner of her lips as she thought of how he had made her chuckle as he poked fun of her, or as he cracked a few of his Atul-jokes, as Anjali often called them.

Anjali and Atul had been good for each other. Even though neither had admitted it, everyone in the hospital knew that it was anytime that something would push either of them over the edge, and have them admitting the feelings. Though no one in the hospital had tried to get them together. It was too much fun watching Atul stumbling about, and Anjali blushing or breaking the cool and uncaring facade she had on.

Though Muskaan knew that Anjali was anything but uncaring. She was one of the most efficient surgeons in the hospital, her organizing skills and calmness helped her perform many surgeries successfully. There were times when Muskaan had found herself scrubbing in with Anjali just to gain a few pointers on how to handle a few tricky situations.

Sighing, Muskaan rubbed her shoulders and neck once more, trying to massage away the pain. She could feel the tiredness at the back of her eyes and felt another yawn making its way out. Stretching her arms out, Muskaan felt her bones crack and relieve a bit of pressure, making her sigh out in pleasure She knew she had been sitting for hours, and her legs would probably refuse to cooperate with her in case she got up. Which is why she took the support of the wall behind her and slowly stood up.

There were pins and needles in her legs and Muskaan had to shake them vigorously a couple of times to get rid of them. Gathering up her books, Muskaan made her way to the cafeteria to have a bite before she left for home.

Stepping into the cafeteria, Muskaan grabbed a sandwich and coffee and went and sat on an empty table, dumping her books on the table besides her food. Muskaan was just about to bite into the sandwich when she felt a soft hand on her shoulder, Stiffening, Muskaan halted and placed the sandwich back onto the plate. Feeling her stomach give out a noise of protest at not being fed, Muskaan slowly turned around, all the while praying that it wasn't him.

Though a tiny part of her hoped that he still wanted to talk to her, Muskaan still wasn't sure how she would react once he actually made the awkward small talk she was sure they would have. She sure hoped that whenever the day came, the old Muskaan would not make an appearance. Giving out a sigh of relief, Muskaan saw Nikki standing there with a grim expression on her face. However her heart still tugged slightly when she realised that it had been two days since he had come but he hadn't made the effort to approach her. Not once.

Giving a small smile, Muskaan turned back to her sandwich and picked it up to bite into it. Nikki sat in the seat opposite hers as Muskaan took a small bite of her food. Nikki had a pained expression on her face and kept clenching and unclenching her fists. Her eyes were darting around and she would give out a sigh every now and then.

"Abhi has forbidden me" Nikki started, not being able to keep quiet any longer. Muskaan raised an eyebrow but did not say anything.

It was funny how 4 years ago, she would have been the one freaking out over the tinyest of things. It was the one thing Nikki and Muskaan had in common. Their fashion sense did not match, their sense of humour was poles apart, their approach to men was also completely different. However their reaction to certain situations were identical. However, since Muskaan had rid of her old personality, it seemed as though even that similarity had now vanished, leaving them as completely opposite people who had by some stroke of luck, still remained friends.

Nikki groaned and dropped her head in her hands, "I really want. You have no idea how badly. But Abhi has given explicit orders not to do anything." Nikki made a face as she finished speaking.

Muskaan had an inclination what she was talking about, but said nothing. She continued to eat her food as she looked at Nikki, waiting for her to get it all out.

"I wish he wasn't here. But I am glad. At least now he can pay for everything. I want to go up to him, deck him in the face, kick him in the balls snatch his hair out and make my interns do a surgery on him. Trust me, having my interns diagnose and perform surgery would be the worst torture ever. They are probably the most miserable lot of doctors ever. Don't tell Abhi though, Sid is my intern. Though I still wonder how he passed an got into Sanjeevani!" Taking a deep breath Nikki finished her rant. Running a hand through her hair, Nikki rolled her eyes in exasperation as she saw that Muskaan was still munching on her sandwich and had not said anything.

"How can you not say anything? Muski, he is here! You should go up to him and hit, kick and scratch him! You should give him every gaali in the history! And then give him to me so I can complete the torture" Nikki said, looking evil as she plotted her plan.

Muskaan felt a small smile tug at the corner of her lips. Trust Nikki to come up with a plan. Spending her entire childhood with Armaan might have had something to how evil Nikki was when it came to revenge. Maybe the old Muskaan would have gone and done exactly what Nikki was saying, however she had overcome from that, and slowly Muskaan shook her head.

"Sorry Nikki. I am not going to do that" Muskaan said, giving her an apologetic smile. Nikki groaned and flopped her head on the table, banging against it a couple of times.

"Careful, you are losing brain cells" Muskaan commented as she took another bite of her sandwich. Nikki gave another groan and looked up from the table.

"Abhi said you won't get involved. Muski, he hurt you, he hurt everyone. Don't you want a taste of revenge? Don't you want answers?"

Muskaan thought over it. Of course she wanted to see him suffer. Of course she wanted answers. But she wasn't sure if she could handle a confrontation yet. Swallowing the lump that had formed in her throat, Muskaan sighed, "Nikki. I am fine."

"You didn't answer my questions though" Nikki said in a soft voice, still looking at her.

Muskaan looked away, blinking quickly a couple of times. "I can't talk to him, or look at him anymore. He is happy Nikki. He doesn't want us interfering, and I have moved on anyway."

When Muskaan heard consistent banging, Muskaan looked at Nikki in alarm and saw she was banging her head against the table once more. Giving her a sad smile, Muskaan started gathering her rubbish, planning to throw it away.

Finally Nikki stopped and looked at Muskaan once more. "Fine, you don't do anything. But I am not stopping. I hate him for what he did to you"

Muskaan couldn't say anything. She appreciated Nikki's concern and protectiveness a lot. She loved Nikki for that. But she wasn't sure if she could open her mouth and not let everything that she had been bottling up out and breaking down once again.

She nodded her thanks, got up threw her rubbish and made her way home. The one place where she didn't have to fear bumping into him.

So here it is! Hopefully it didn't disappoint! Notice how i am bringing each character from Sanjeevani in each chapter? That was all intentional, because I wanted to focus on the different characteristics of each :) Enjoy! PMs coming up!

Hey :)

I just came across this FF! I love it! It's beautifully written <3

Rahul-Muskaan are my favorite after Armaan-Riddhima :) However they didn't get a proper end in DMG :|

I love the way you've portrayed Muskaan's pain! And I love the way she's strong <3

Very well written too, without any grammar mistakes! No seriously, I am a huge grammar Nazi 😆

Please add me to the PM list :)

A suggestion - Please make an index on the first Page so that people know which page to look for, for updates :D

Continue soon!

xoxo

Thank you everyone for the lovely reviews and the 'likes'. These little things always bring a smile to my face and brighten my day, so thank you very, very much :)

Finally after ages, I have come back to the forum to update you that I have started on the next part, it is coming on nicely, but since the traits of a virgo live in me, and they are known as perfectionists, I won't be updating till I am absolutely satisfied with it 😳 Sorry if it frustrates you. Trust me, sometimes I frustrate myself. But I promise not to keep you waiting for too long!

@Radhika : Thanks lovely! Glad you liked it! :)

@Ananya : Aww glad you bumped into my fic, and liked it! :) I know! They were my favourite too, and they were developing so nicely! Unfortunately, like pretty much a lot of things in DMG, even this wasn't given the entire justice it deserved :( Hahaha me too! I hate fanfics which are loaded with spelling errors. It's almost like my brain is in an overdrive to read, understand and do their spelling corrections for them. Sometimes it's so bad that I can't even understand what they are trying to say -.-
Sure! Will start a PM list for this :)
Ahh that's a great suggestion, will get onto that! Thanks for the lovely review! :)

@Rapunzell : Aww thanks lovely! Glad you are liking the parts and think I am doing justice to her pain. Sometimes it's hard to imagine such pain, which makes it even harder to write about, so I am glad you are liking it all so far :) Will update soon! :D
