Chapter 13
Sam marched inside the Commissioner's room and saluted him.
"Goodevening Chief." the commissioner greeted him warmly and asked him to take a seat next to Sana who was sitting silently with her hands clasped in her lap.
"I must say you guys have done the impossible. Jab Sana ne mujhse undercover agent bankar jaane ki baat kahi thi, mujhe laga tha ke ye plan kamyab nahi hoga...Devraj bahut chalak hai...magar tum dono ne ye kar dikhaya...Chief Sam, apki American unit se hume jo bhi help mili uske liye shukriya. Mujhe aj bhi yaad hai, tumhari behan, Aasma, meri junior hua karti thi. She was an amazing officer. Pata nahi uski maut hui kaise. And Sana, I can only congratulate you. 1 sath Devraj aur Maxwell dono ko hi khatam kar dia tumne...very well done...."
The commissioner kept speaking for about another half an hour. But Sana was not listening to him. Her mind was blank...somewhere else. /she could hear him speaking and Sam replying to him but it was all irrelevant. It seemed like everything had dissolved around her. She had been an undercover agent in many operations...But this time, she felt, she had chosen the wrong place and the wrong man.
The look Devraj gave her was overpowering her. She had not dared to look at him even once. But their eyes had met on the way to prison and she was surprised to see no anger there for once. There was only shock. And disbelief. Nothing else. She had looked away quickly and now this was troubling her alot. Usually she used to enjoy to see her victims' reactions. Her pleasure at arresting yet another criminal was mysteriously gone. The only thing that came to her mind was Devraj's eyes...and his confessions of his love, which would not let her sleep. Trapping a guy was very easy for her, courtesy her attractive looks. But she was never as heartless to play with somebody's emotions. A hand tapped her gently on the shoulder and brought her out of her reverie. It was Sam gazing at her intently.
"Answer Commissioner Sir Sana..."
"W-What?"
"Sir just asked when is the party?" His face broke into a big smile. She gave him a small smile while the commissioner laughed and said
"Sana, you may go now...you look really tired. Take a few days' leave and enjoy. After all you have been on your toes for months!" She gladly got up and left while Sam followed her. Once out of the cabin, he gently touched her hand.
"Sana...sab thik to hai na?"
She looked at him blankly. He was a close friend of hers from school. They had studied together until his sister died and his relatives took him away to USA. Since then they had been in touch and used to help each other a lot.
She did not reply but just crossed her arms and closed her eyes.
"I think mujhe chalna chahiye..."
Sam did not leave her wrist and said, "Usne...tumhare sath kuch...I mean, mission ke dauran kuch galat to nahi...He didnt try to take davantage of you did he?" Sam's voice was full of bitterness when he spat out his worst fears. Sana looked at him in amazement.
"Nahi, aisa kuch nahi hua...I was fine."
"Thank God...Varna Devraj jaisa insaan...wo to insaan kehlane ke layak bhi nahi hai...Im really glad that we have him. Tum nahi janti ho k maine is din ak kitni besabri se intzaar kia hai, Sana, ke mai is admi ko iske kiye ki saza de saku."
Sana did not reply and gently signalled him to let go of her wrist. He smiled and did that. When they reached the end of the corridor,Sam turned around to go to the place where Devraj was at that time.
"Sam! Duty hai tumhari?"
"Nahi...bas aise hi."
Sana sensed what was coming up. It was around 2 in the night and the place was isolated. She ran upto him and said
"Tum pagal to nahi ho gaye ho...We cant kill him."
"Really?"
"Sam no!"
Sam ignored her and pushed the door open to the high security cell guarded by 2 guards. Sana followed him frantically but kept quite as she did not want to create a scene in front of the guards. Sam asked them to leave and stopped infront of the bars that held Devraj. He was still dressed in his suit and was sitting calmly on the bench, his head bowed. He looked up at the commotion to see Sana and Sam there. Sam opened the cell and entered while Sana remained outside. He looked curious like a child. Sam gave hima bitter smile and asked
"So...kaisa lag raha hai Raj...Apni sahi jagah akar?"
"Kuch khas nahi...Im bored...Cant I get a newspaper atleast?"
Sam's blood boiled at his words and he punched his face hard. Devraj's head banged against the wall and begun to bleed. Sana gasped and entered the cell but before she could stop him, Sam was already out of control. He clutched his hair and said in a low voice
"Tumhe hisab dena hoga Devraj...Tumne meri behan ko dhokha diya hai...aur ye mai achchi tarah janta hu...Mai tumhe chain se marne bhi nahi dunga...aisi halat karunga tumhari, ke maut ke liye bhikh mangte nazar aoge...yaad rakhna meri baat...."
At that point Sana pulled him back with a jerk and screamed
"Have you lost it Sam? What the hell are you doing?"
Sam lost his temper and shouted right back ignoring Devraj who was slumped against the wall, breathing heavily, his eyes fixed on Sana.
"I have lost it? This man killed my sister and I have lost it! Dammit Sana tumhe ho kya gaya hai? Jab se wapis ayi ho pata nahi kis tarah behave kar rahi ho...Mujhe to lag raha hai ke tum sach me Naina Roy hi bann gai ho!"
Sana was stumped at this and remained rooted to the spot as Sam banged open the cell door and left. She kept staring at the cell door which was moving to and fro with the impact of being slammed until she heard Devraj's movements in the corner. He was still gazing at her intently. Her expressions hardened and she turned around to leave when he called her.
"Naina"
"Mera naam Sana hai...Officer Sana Azmi..."
"Mere liye to tum hamesha Naina hi rahogi..."
She spinned around and said in a harsh voice
"Wasnt Sam enough?"
Devraj ignored her words and slowly massaged the back of his head, sitting up straight.
"Apne jazbaato se Itni jaldi haar jaogi Naina? Tumse ye ummeed nahi thi mujhe."
"Apni bakwaas band karo...agar mai chahu to abhi tumhari jaan le sakti hu. So mind what you are saying." She had crossed her arms and looked very rude now. Devraj smiled again.
"Agar tum chaho to... Go ahead, I dont mind."
"Tum samajhte kya ho apne aap ko? Tumhe kya lagta hai, bhaag jaoge tum yaha se? Ajtak tumne kia hi kya masumo ki jaan lene k siwaye? Tumhari zindagi ka 1 1 lamha kisi na kisi k khoon se ranga hua hai. Isliye mujhse ya kisi bhi insaan se daya ki ummeed mat karna!"
"Mai tumse daya ki ummeed nahi karta...Sach to ye hai k jo tumne mere sath kia, wahi maine bhi kisi ke saath kia tha...magar bas itna bata do, k tumne aisa kia kyu...kya dushmani hai tumhari mujhse? Something personal...or just professional?"
Sana was shocked to hear his question. He looked like a man who had accepted his fate and had no complaints from it. It was easier to kill people who resisted. But when they handed you the weapon to kill them, it was impossible.
She looked away and said
"Everyone who is human is your enemy Devraj. Mujhe tumhare jaise admi se koi rishta nahi rakhna...dushmani ka bhi nahi."
With that she left and he rested his head spinning head against the wall, looking at his hands covered with his own blood. All he could comprehend was that Naina would never be his now. First time in his life he had felt that he possesed a heart with emotions. His whole world had begun to revolve around Naina to such an extent that everything else- his violence, anger, illegal business, everything had ceased to matter. And then he had decided to let go all of it. Except one- only one desire- of revenge against Maxwell. That one desire to taste the vengeance proved to cost him his dreams. And that was it. when he had seen the police in the doorway, his first thought was- Save Naina. But when she walked away, his dreams crashed around his ears and suddenly he felt like Sam was his best friend. He could have tried to fight...and maybe had even managed to escape. But he wanted that one answer from her- why she did this. For when he had loved her endlessly, why she had betrayed him. He was not angry. He was sad. Sadness had been an unknown emotion to him for when he wanted something and he could not get it, it sparked a determination in him to snatch it. And today when Sam came in front of his eyes, he got his answer. There are no answers to why me in this world. He knew now how Aasma must have felt when he stood in front of her with the gun. He knew somewhere deep inside his heart that if Maxwell had not appeared, he would have shot her dead. Whatever reasons he might cite in favour of this deed, he knew it was actually driven by the cause that it was the easiest way out at that time. But he had not anticipated that this would haunt him for the rest of his life. Only Karan knew about this phase of his life, apart from Maxwell ofcourse. Karan...He had had not time to think about him...Where was he? Devraj knew that none of his employees were arrested. Then what happened to Karan.... He wished he would have survived and was safe. His own humanity amused him.

Sana practically ran out of Devraj's line of vision as his gaze was hurting her now. She wondered why she stopped Sam from giving him the treatment he rightly deserved. She was known in the entire department for her ruthlessness towards criminals and this was unprecedented behaviour. She had to stop herself from caressing his hair and comforting him. Bleeding...she had seen the blood on his hands...seen it trickling down his neck. She stopped and looked around for the doctor. But he was not there. Upon enquiring, she came to know that he was on leave. She saw the first aid box placed on its corner and picked it up after steeling herself.
Devraj looked up again as the cell door opened. Blood was flowing freely now and it was weakening him. He couldnt see clearly but he knew it was her. And that made him smile. Sana tried her best to ignore that captivating smile which held a combination of helplessness and victory...as if he was saying, I knew you will come!
She sat down next to him and bent his head to have a look at the wound. It wasnt very deep and just required minimal dressing. She started to clean it up, trying not to notice his breathing and close physical proximity. He remained silent throughout and was smiling to himself unnoticed by her. When she was done, she looked at him again and her eyes fell upon his chained wrists. His hands covered in scarlet blood were bound by a long chain. The sight somehow repulsed her and she quickly wiped his blood off using her handkerchief. His hands closed around hers as she was pulling the now red handkerchief now and she felt a current pass through her body. He released her as quickly as he had held and she again got up to run away but halted suddenly. Sam was standing at the cell door, his eyes filled with anger, disgust and disappointment. He had come ther to ask her if she needed a ride home.
He turned around and left wordlessly. Sana was further irritated. she looked up at the dim bulb lighting up the cell and wondered why in the first place she took this case.
This man was jeopardising her life, her friends, her morals and everything else she cherished.
Devraj decided it was best not to react. But her touch had been really amazing. It was worth the pain after all, he mused.
