Part 2—

(just outside jain residence)

nupur and dia were getting out of their house all ready for jogging. They looked around the place. It was do beautiful. Birds chirping. A nice autumn breeze was blowing. There was no one around. Wow. This couldn't have been better thought nupur to herself. And bruno barked twice in agreement.

Nupur kneeled down and patted bruno and said- our thoughts are soo alike na my cutuu babby. Hain na hain na… awww… babbyyy..

Dia smiled at nupur although hard as a stone from inside, but with bruno and with mayank she was as soft as cotton candy. She shook her head and smiled.

Dia- Chal you play with bruno, in that time ill go call mayank.

Mayank was their neighbour since class 6^th.

But they had known him since nursery since they were in the same class. And now even after coming to college they were in the same class.

Nupur paid no attention to what dia said but she could feel that familiar tingling sensation that she got in her stomach everytime she heard mayanks name. mayank, she, dia and samrat had been the bestest friends since 2^nd. They had never brocken up. and even in 11^th before opting the streams they had sat down and had decided which one they all liked. Lately since around 11^th end nupur had started feeling sort of uncomfortable around mayank. She felt shy and reserved when he was around. When she consulted samrat and dia about why she felt that way, they had pounced on her like a lioness pounces on her prey. And since that day not a single day went without dia and samrat pairing mayank and nupur. nupur remembered the farewell of class 12^th when mayank had for the 1^st time kissed her on the cheek. That night she had called him and told him that she loved him. And had gotten a sullen response. He had said he loved her too but as a sister. she had broken down on the phone. And had cried herself to sleep. They had never discussed that incident ever after that. But that was the time she had made herself cold and unvulnerable. Now it had been 5 months since that day. but nupur still felt attracted to him. She dint know whether he still loved her as a sister or not. But one thing that everybody had noticed was that since that day mayank had created a sort of barrier in between the two of them. He distanced himself from nupur as much as he could. Although dia and nupur were sisters but dia generally sat with samrat who was dias best friend. And nupur was left alone coz mayank would go and sit with this really snobbish girl gunjan jain, who had also been with them since nursery. And lately mayank and gunjan had started mostly keeping with each other. Nupur had always felt jealous around gunjan, and now she wanted to steal mayank away from her. Sometimes she felt like barging at them and asking them wats going on and sometimes she just felt so helpless in herself. Yet she never broke down in front of them. She would cry when she was alone. Sometimes when she came back from college she would run into her room and would lock the door and cry. Cry till she dint have any tears left. Mayank had broken off from her and the group all thanks to her. He talked to samrat and dia. That she knew because she saw his name in the received calls of both their cells. But he wouldn't even take hr calls when she called him. She had suddenly changed from a childish loving girl to a monotonous quiet girl. It was as though she had in one go aged several years. Seeing her loneliness samrat , dia and akhil bought her a dog now also known as bruno. It was the only thing because of which she hadn't collapsed down. she was always with a heavy heart. But somehow even dia and samrat had stopped noticing her anymore. As she thought about her life tears welled up in her eyes. But she quickly cleared and wiped her eyes. Just then dia came from the opposste lane and said-

'mayanks with gunjan jain. He is going jogging with her.'

Nupur- no problem. Lets go call anvita and samrat.

She said trying her best to hid her disappointment. Atleast theres anvita, nupur thought to herself.

Anvita saxena was samrats big sister. a company she had never thought she would have. Anvita had always been a great support to nupur. whenever nupur felt heavy in her heart, she would go to anivta. The only problem being, anvita was not of her year. Nupur was in 1^st yr and anvita was in 2^nd year. Or nupurs life wouldn't have been that bad.

They soon reached samrats place, where both samrat and anvita were already ready waiting for them. From there samrat and dia walked together, and anvita and nupur walked together. When they reached the sports complex, they saw mayank and gunjan getting out of gunjans car. Gunjan looked around and saw them. She whispered something in mayanks ears and pointed at them. they both started walking towards them. Samrat and dia were walking in front while nupur and anvita were walking behind them. Mayank and gunjan approached samrat and dia and said hi to them. Then leaving mayank standing with samrat and dia gunjan came towards nupur and anvita and she said-

'hey anvita'

anvita- hi gunjan

gunjan- hey nupur. how are you? Long time no see?

Nupur. heyy. Ya that's true.

Then gunjan looked at mayank who also looking at gunjan and pointed towards anvita and nupur.

Mayank took a deep breath and approached them.

Nupur could already feel her heart racing, would he finally talk to her after all these months, she thought.

As he came there he looked directly at anvita and said-

'hey anvita wassup?'

anvita- nothing yaar. You tell me?

Mayank- nothing as always. Soo how you doing?

Anvita-im doing good. And you?

Mayank- same here

They both smiled at each other.

Mayank gave nupur one last look then turned and went back to dia and samrat, and as he went he took gunjans hand in his taking her with him.

Nupur could just feel her heart becoming more and more heavy with every step that e took. But he dint look back. He just went on with samrat and dia.

Anvita slowly put her hand on nupurs shoulder and she said—

'koi baat nahi yaar. Forget it. Its high time. He doesn't care about you.'

Without my own accord a tear fell out of my eye and I wiped it and said—

'I know.'

Just then uday came from behind and surprised them.

Uday- Hey nupur. hey anvita. Kya ho raha hai?

Anvita and nupur- kuch nahi yaar.

Nupur- listen guys im going for my jog.

Uday- ok bye.

As nupur was jogging she couldn't help but notice mayank, gunjan, samrat and dia who were in the tennis court.

She looked down at the ground and wondered whether it was just her imagination or were samrat and dia distancing themselves from her too. It was as though suddenly gunjan had replaced nupur in the group. She just hated herself to think that way, but she somehow felt like gunjan was having nupurs bit of the fun. I mean the way gunjan and mayank were giving each other high fives and the way they were whispering in each others ears again and again. That was the time when the hatred had began to swell up in nupurs heart for mayank, gunjan, and maybe a little for samrat and dia too.
