Part 18

Sunlight streamed through the curtains as birds chirped outside the open window. Nikki groaned and turned, feeling for Abhi. Upon encountering empty space beside her, she slowly opened her eyes to find Abhi standing infront of the open window, shirtless.

She smiled and slowly sat up, hugging the blanket around her. "Abhi…" she said.

He turned around and smiled. "Good Morning sweetheart," he greeted.

"Good morning…" she replied. "Kya kal raat ka nasha chala gaya? Ya… abhi bhi kuch hai?" she teased.

Abhi laughed. "I think kal raat tumhe nasha chadgaya… not me!"

"yeah right," she objected. "Who was the one acting?"

"Weren't you acting as well?"

Nikki looked away. "I had a reason… you didn't."

"Of course I did," Abhi said. Nikki looked up. "How could I let such a golden opportunity just slip from my hands?"

"Letting me seduce you was a golden opportunity?"

"Haan meri jaan," Abhi said, sitting on the bed. "Warna tum toh apni bet ke wajah se mujhe paas bhi nahin aane deti."

"Hmm…" And Nikki suddenly fell into her thoughts.

"Kya?" Abhi asked.

"Abhi," she said. "Mujhe tumse baat karni thi uss bet ke baare mein. I think… I think, we should tell everyone the truth."

"Matlab?"

"Matlab I don't want to act infront of Armaan and Rahul anymore," she clarified. "The topic came up yesterday and by the looks of it, I think it is best if the truth comes out as soon as possible!"

"Mujhe koi problem nahin hai… magar tumhare bodyguards… I don't think they will like the news too much!"

"Whether they like it or not," Nikki replied. "They will have to accept it."

"Waise… what exactly happened yesterday?" Abhi asked.

She sighed in response. "Poocho mat. Those two got me into such a tight corner yesterday… oh my god!"

"What do you mean?"

And then Nikki proceeded to explain about the dare put by Armaan and Rahul. By the end of it, Abhi was laughing.

"Its not funny," she said sternly. "You should have seen me… I was soo scared."

"But they must already know, when I stared singing…."

Nikki grinned. "no… I turned off my phone."

Abhi nodded. "Good luck explaining to them why you did that!"

"It won't be too hard," Nikki said, more to herself than to Abhi. "Considering they are going to know whole truth anyway."

"Armaan…"

"Basket," Armaan replied to an annoyed and somewhat angry Ridhima.

"I am serious Armaan," she said. "What you did was not right,"

"I know," he said, in a husky voice. "I shouldn't have let you leave last night… mujhe tumhe personally drop karna chahiye tha!"

Ridhima glared at him. They were in their usual spot – the fire escape route – and like the countless times before, they were arguing about something. Today the topic was Nikki. Ridhima, who strongly disapproved of Armaan's dare last night, was trying to make him see some sense, whereas Armaan as usual was flirting with his basket.

"Ek baar socho," she said. "Agar kissi ne hamare saath aisa kiya hota, toh? Won't we be embarrassed?"

"No," he answered. "Kyunki hamare saath aisa nahin hoga. Unlike Nikki, we actually trust our friends to tell them about our relationship."

"Shayad Nikki ki koi majburi hogi," Ridhima said. "And besides, whats the guarantee that she is definetly having a relationship with Dr. Modi?"

"Issi liye I put that dare," Armaan said. "I wanted to know if there is something."

Ridhima sighed. "How can you be so immature? Even if there is something going on, obviously Nikki doesn't want to share it."

"Magar main uska best friend hoon," Armaan replied in a serious and angry tone. "Aur jahan tak mujhe pata hain, best friends ke saath dhoka nahin kiya jaatha hai."

"Yeh dhoka nahin hai Armaan," she said. "maybe she is just not ready."

Armaan was about to argue, but Ridhima cut him off.

"Dekho," she said. "hum bhi papa se hamara rishta chupa rahe hain. Iska matlab yeh toh nahin ki hum unko dhoka deh raha hain. Aisi hi, Nikki bhi hume dhoka nahin deh rahi hai. Aur tum, uski best friend hoke, uss ke saath hona chahiye."

"Magar humne doston se toh nahin chupaya na?" Armaan asked.

"Kya tum apna zid chod kar ek baar Nikki ke baare mein soocho ge?"

"Nahin," he replied, stubbornly. "Kyunki gaalthi Nikki ki hai."

"Magar kaal raath ke baad, yeh toh saaf hai ki Nikki humse kuch nahin chupa rahi hai," Ridhima said. "There was nothing between them!"

"If there was nothing between then," Armaan retorted. "Then why the hell did Nikki cu the phone last night?"

"She probably didn't do it purposefully!"

"Yeh right," Armaan said. "Ek baar usse aa jaane toh doh…" and he didn't have to finish his sentence.

"Armaan," Ridhima said sternly. "Tum Nikki ko taang karna band karo. She can do whatever she wants."

"No," he replied. "Nikki will have to answer us no matter what."

"Armaan tum meri baat sunoge ya nahin?"

"Ridhima tum samajthi kyun nahin ho."

"Main?" Ridhima fumed. "Main nahin samaj rahi hoon?"

"Haan…"

"You know what," she said, utterly pissed off. "Tumse baat karna hi bekar hai."

"Toh baat kyun karthi ho?" Armaan asked, equally angry.

"Haan gaalthi toh meri hai. Tum jaise ladke se pyar karke. You are so insensible… dosron ko kabhi samaj hi nahin pate ho tum. Pehle Nikki aur aab main. Tumhe jo karna hai karo. Mujhe aab koi farak nahin padtha."

And with that she walked away, leaving a confused Armaan behind.

Yeh Abhi kahan chala gaya, Nikki thought as she entered the hospital. We were supposed to tell the truth together.

And just as she reached the nursing station for the morning briefing with Dr. Keerti, she saw the six interns waiting for her.

"Hi guys," she greeted brightly. Anjali, Muskaan and Ridhima returned the greeting, while Armaan and Rahul sterny looked at her.

"Kaal raat phone kyun kat diya," Armaan fired off, ignoring an angry Ridhima's glare.

But Nikki, who was expecting this, had an answer ready. "Meri phone karab hogi."

"Achanak kaise karab ho saktha hai?" Rahul asked, raising his eyebrows.

"Achanak nahin," Nikki replied. "Tum dono ki wajah se."

"What?"

"Haan," she said. "Because of your stupid bet, I had to keep it on in the rain. The water went inside it and it just turned off. My poor iphone!!!" Nikki pretened to sniff.

Ridhima continued to shoot draggers at Armaan, while the other two girls gave Nikki a comforting hug.

Far from being guilty, Armaan and Rahul were still suspicious about Nikki. But before they could question her further, Dr. Keeti walked in with a happy looking Abhi.

"Good Morning Doctors," she said. "Dr. Anjali aur Dr. Muskaan – children's ward. Dr. Rahul and Dr. Atul – general ward. Dr. Armaan – path lab and Dr. Ridhima and Dr. Nikki, aap lonavala jaaenge. The hospital van will pick you guys in about an hour."

While Ridhima nodded, happy to be away from Armaan, Nikki's face fell. This meant she could not tell everyone the truth.

"Yeh Dr. Keerti ko bhi abhi mujhe bejna tha?" Nikki fumed, as she paced in Abhi's office. "How the hell am I supposed to tell everyone the truth?"

"You can tell everyone now," replied a calm Abhi, who was far from being bothered about the sudden change of plans.

"No," Nikki objected. "I have to make sure I fully convince Rahul and Armaan warna they will make their own opinions and won't listen to me when I come back and explain the rest."

"Aisa kuch nahin hoga," Abhi said.

"And besides, telling them will take atleast an hour and all I have is an hour!!!"

Abhi didn't reply.

"Main kya karoon?"

"Kuch nahin," he said. "Lonavala jao."

Nikki stopped pacing and stood infront of her hubby. "Abhi…" she said. "Tum koi farak nahin padtha mujhe Lonavala bejthe hue? Pehle toh tum aise nahin the."

"Tum ek din ke liye jaa rahi ho Nikki," he replied, still camly. "Isse mein kaunsi baadi baat hai?"

He looked up to see Nikki's eyebrows raised. "What?" he asked. When she continued to look at him, reality hit him. "WAIT!!!"

He suddenly stood up and walked around to his wife. "You are not going for a day, are you?"

Nikki shook her head as Abhi's heart fell. "I am going for atleast a week… or maybe more."

Abhi hugged her tight. He hated it when she left his side – which was one of the reasons Nikki never finished her internship. He couldn't bear to let her go for medical camps which lasted three to four weeks.

There was a knock on the door, breaking the couple apart. Nikki picked up a file, pretending to read while Abhi said 'come in'.

A nurse walked in, informing Nikki that it was time to go. Nikki gave a quick hug to Abhi and peck on the lips, before leaving. Abhi was reluctant to let her go.

Armaan stared at Ridhima as she walked around the locker room gathering her things for her departure to Lonavala. She was successfully ignoring him, making small talk with the rest of the interns.

Just then Nikki walked in with her suitcase, evidently upset over something. He noted her down face.

"Kya hua Nikki," he asked. "Why so sad?"

Nikki looked up. "I don't want to leave…"

"Kyun," he asked. "You don't have any relatives here to miss, right?"

Ridhima glared at him, shaking her head. Yeh kabhi nahin sudrega, she fumed to herself. Itna samjane ke baad bhi, he is still behind the poor girl.

"Kyun," Anjali interfered. "Nikki hum nahin miss kar sakthi."

Nikki nodded. "I will miss you people. Pata nahin yeh camp kitne din hoga…" Aur main Abhi ko kab dekh paoongi, she added mentally.

Armaan caught Ridhima's arm, pulling her back from everyone else as they proceeded to the parking lot, where the van was waiting.

"Armaan – chodo – mujhe," Ridhima said between struggles.

"Mujhse baat karne bina hi chaali jaogi?" he asked, in an innocent voice.

"Mujhe tumse baat nahin karni hai!"

"Kyun?"

"Itna kehne ke baad," Ridhima said. "Tum abhi bhi Nikki ke peche pade ho! Tum kabhi nahin sudroge Armaan."

And with that, she broke free of his grip and walked away. Armaan, however, smiled.

"Tum gusse mein bhi kitni achi lagthi ho Basket," he said to himself. "Koi baat nahin. Tumhari yeh gussa kaam karna mujhe aata hai. Lonavala ki ladkiyoon… savdan rehna. Kyunki mein aa raha hoon… apni Basket ke liye."
