As he walked away, she followed him, almost running to keep up with his speed. ''But why Mayank , kyunn ??? Have I done anything wrong?? Please tell me. I will make it up to you. Anything ''. ''It's not you'' - he said not for the first time that day, this time his voice was louder and colder. Nupur begged him to tell her why he had been behaving strange lately. Why he pretended not to see her, when they walked past each other in the hallways. Her calls, messages, all unanswered. If it was a day or two, she could have understood, it had been 2 weeks.
She remembered in great detail how this had all started. The weekend after the project, they met up in to local cafe, as agreed. She had taken 2 hours to get ready that morning. She let her hair out and wore her favourite shoes. She was seeing Mayank, outside college for the time time. She felt special and lucky. She could recognise Mayank even from distant, already seated in the cafe. She checked her watch. ''CRAP!!!!! 15 minutes late". He was wearing the Orange shirt, the one she'd first seen him in. Mayank didn't complain about her lateness. They sat there talking about nothing in particular or more than two hours. Sipping one cup of coffee after another. When she was with him, she lost the sense of time. She watched him, as he thoughtfully ran his hands into his hair, with great care not to spoil his spikes. She watched his mouth move, as he spoke and his eyes shine when he smiled. Then, Nupur asked him just out of her curiosity, what now seemed the biggest mistake she'd ever made. ''Mayank, have you ever been in love? ''. The smile on his face faded. ''NO!'' he replied. ''Aaise kaise?? Are you saying you have never had a girlfriend and you have never liked anyone??'' Nupur asked, regretting it as soon as she finished. He sighed, his lovely face now serious. ''I don't believe in love and s**t. It's for people who don't have better things to with their life. When time comes I will get married to whoever my mom thinks is suitable. '', with those bitter words he called for the waiter, and said he was running late. Then, he left. Nothing was the same ever since.
She must have reminded him of his parent's failed love, there was no other reason for Mayank to behave that way. As soon as she got home, she dialled his number. His phone was switched off. She tried his home number. It was a women's voice, his mother, Nupur greeted her and asked for Mayank. He wasn't home. She was relieved when she saw Mayank waiting for her outside the gate, like he had for the past few weeks. He apologised for his behaviour and Nupur assured him it was ok. He smiled. But the smile didn't reach his eyes. It just assured Nupur that something indeed was wrong. Very wrong.
On numerous occasions, she caught Mayank staring into space, in a deep thought. She tried to ask him what was wrong, he always changed the subject. Slowly, Mayank hardly ever spoke to Nupur. They sat together during lessons, but she did most of the talking. He listened, nodded and smiled at appropriate intervals. His mind however, was always somewhere else.
She hated the thought of it, but she was starting to feel like what she thought as a strong friendship, hadn't meant anything to him. He was only working with because he was paired with her. It was more of compulsion.
Today, she was determined to get it out of him. She knew something was troubling him. She assured him she would help and not tell anybody. All in vain. He kept walking, not listening to what she had to say. Finally, he turned and looked at her straight into her eyes.
She opened her mouth to say something, but words wouldn't come out. She looked into his piercing eyes, hoping she could somehow find out what this was all about. His usually calm face was red, he looked angry. Realising that people around were staring, he grabbed her by her wrist and dragged her violently behind the nearest tree. For the first time, Nupur felt she's made a wrong judgement about Mayank. At this very moment, Mayank looked anything but angelic. She thought, he was going to hit her as he raised his fist towards her direction. He punched the tree behind them with great force, twice. Nupur could have screamed with fear and guilt. He looked deep into her eyes, she could see them welling.
''You want to know what my problem is?????? '', he groaned. ''yes!! Please tell me''
''its you....... ''
The rest of the things he said, Nupur wished she hadn't heard . It was tragic, almost heartbreaking. She didn't think such things could happen, apart from in the movies. When he finished, it all made perfect sense. His hatred towards love, his sudden change of behaviour... Everything fell in place
The only thing that bothered her now was the last few sentences out of his lips , before he left.. One more time, leaving her speechless and out of breathe. She felt dizzy; Mayank's words swirled around her head. She repeated what he'd just said .........
''Please, don't bring up this topic ever again. I am sorry we can't be friends anymore. You know too much .Please stay away from me Nupur...It's the best for both of us..We are both adults and this is the best way to deal with this.... ''
Struggling to get a grip on himself, Mayank slammed the door behind him and ran directly into his room. He threw his body onto his bed and for the first time in many years, he cried........
