"Anitha, what is so important that you made me meet you at six in the morning?!" Alliyah said as she stepped into Anitha and Kripa's apartment.
"Because Kripa just now left and somebody needs to know about this . . ." Anitha said, walking towards Kripa's bedroom. She returned to the living room carrying a piece of paper.
"What's this?" Alliyah asked taking the letter from Anitha. Upon reading, Alliyah realized it was a letter from the Man in the Mask. "I don't understand. It's a sweet letter; I'm glad she finally gets to meet him."
"Read it again," Anitha insisted. Alliyah gave Anitha a perturbed look before reading the letter again. "Really, Anitha, I don't see anything wrong-"
"Oh you are so dense! I'll show you," Anitha huffed, taking the letter from Alliyah's hands. She went to the kitchen table and retrieved a scrap piece of paper and a pen. "Now do this, write down the first letter of the first word of every sentence."
Rolling her eyes and taking the materials, Alliyah started writing down the letters. She did not need to complete her assignment – she dropped the pen and turned to Anitha with her mouth hanging open.
"Yup, heavy isn't it?" Anitha shook her head and retrieved the discarded pen. Alliyah merely nodded, looking back down at the letter she held in her hand.
"Oh dear. Do we tell her?" Alliyah asked.
"Should we? She's going to meet him Friday anyways," Anitha shrugged.
"This is so ironic. Do you think he's been planning this all along? He obviously left these hints for some reason," Alliyah said, scratching the back of her neck the same way Prithvi does when he's thinking.
"I don't know, probably. He's got the predisposition for scheming, doesn't he? Do you think we should tell Prithvi?"
"No! I don't know how Prithvi would react in this situation. He can be rather possessive sometimes, even though he told me he trusted Angad with his life. I don't know."
"Quite the predicament, isn't it?"
Anitha and Alliyah both sighed and spent the next few minutes in silence. Alliyah was so happy last night when she saw the look of joy in Kripa's face. She could not bear the thought of Kripa losing that joy.
"I wish we could do something, but either way she'll be hurt," Alliyah said looking at the reciprocal expression of sadness in Anitha's face.
"We'll be here though, for her, after it happens. That's when she'll need us."
"I suppose you're right."

Kripa had every intention of informing Angad of the meeting planned for Friday right away and was unhappy to find out he was going out of town for the next few days. She had to wait until Thursday to discuss the matter with him.
Angad was busy with paperwork from his mission and was unable to go out to eat with Kripa as intended. He figured it was just as well, knowing he had to prepare himself for Friday.
"Knock knock."
Angad heard a soft voice and looked up, surprised to see Kripa.
"Kripa, hello," he said, rising from his seat. He walked timidly to Kripa, secretly chastising himself for his foolishness. He gathered his composure and kissed her softly then directed her to a chair. "What are you doing here?"
"I just wanted to see you for a few minutes. I know you're busy, but I have something to tell you."
Angad knew what was coming. The thought of Friday sickened him. He was having a hard time concentrating on anything else, but the thought of what he had to do ate at his soul.
"I received another letter," she said, misinterpreting the nervous look in Angad's eyes as jealousy. She smiled slightly and continued. "He wants to meet me, tomorrow night at eleven at the Westgate Hotel."
"Are you going to go?"
"Yes."
"Why?" The word slipped from Angad quicker than he would have liked. Kripa laughed inside again, thinking he was jealous.
"I want to tell him to leave me alone; that I've met somebody and I am happy with them," Kripa smiled, her eyes shining brightly at Angad.
He could not help but smile at her words. He cherished every thing about her – he was truly happy with Kripa.
Inside, Angad was dying with the thought that after Friday night everything would be different.

Alliyah and Anitha sat nervously in the apartment, trying to occupy themselves until Kripa's inevitable return. Alliyah glanced at the clock and noticed that it was ten after eleven. She sighed and tried to focus on her book. Anitha sighed from the other side of the couch, distracting Alliyah. They gave each other looks of concern and worry and returned to their books.
Meanwhile, Kripa pulled her jacket closer to her body as she waited on the roof of the Westgate Hotel. The night sky was hidden in a shroud of clouds and the only thing illuminating the roof was the billboard that rose above the hotel.
The shadows danced around Kripa, sending shivers up her spine. She looked at her watch. It was fifteen past eleven and no one had shown up. She was considering whether she should leave or not. She was rather disappointed that she was being stood up, again. She wanted to put an end to the game and move on with Angad.
She smiled as her thoughts turned to the man she loved. She hadn't been able to spend much time with him during the week but was looking forward to the prospect of spending quality time together this weekend.
While Kripa's thoughts turned to Angad, a man was waiting in the shadows. He was pacing back and forth, debating in his mind whether he should step out of the shadows. He didn't want this moment to come. He wanted to rush over to Kripa and hold her in his arms and keep her there forever.
He knew he ruined his chance at happiness but had the power to ensure hers. He knew that withholding the truth would only hurt her more in the end and he could not live with himself if he knowingly hurt Kripa worse than he already had.
He took one step towards Kripa, followed by another, the mask clutched firmly in his hand.
Kripa noticed a man emerge from the shadows and her heart began to pound against her chest. The moment had come. She was finally going to find out who the face was behind the mask.
The man approached Kripa cautiously, stopping just in front of her. Her eyes adjusted to his form and a look of confusion spread across her face.
"Angad? What are you doing here?" she asked, observing Angad's somber look and silence.
He looked at Kripa, trying for one last minute to commit her face to memory. He looked down at the mask in his hand. He handed it to Kripa as a single tear streaked down his cheek, hidden by the shadows that continued to dance around them.
Kripa stared at the mask in her hands. She looked into Angad's cool gray eyes that penetrated into her own. She noticed how the wind moved through Angad's hair, pushing it into his eyes. She saw the pain and desperation in his eyes that she had seen before. This time she saw no hope, only the painful determination he had resigned to.
She did not realize when the tears began to stream down her cheeks. The wind bit at her skin and her eyes reddened.
"You deceived me," she said weakly.
Angad closed his eyes and allowed the tears to flow down his face. A moment later he heard a door slam and knew that he was alone.
* * *
The young man stood alone in the shadows, incapable of any movement. His eyes lingered on the mask that had fallen to his feet. His every breath constrained by the emotions that consumed him.
He stared into the hollow eyes of the mask that seemed to mock him, representing everything Angad hated – lies, deceit, torture, pain. The muscles in his body tensed as the mask continued to stare blankly into Angad's soul.
He could hear the sickening laugh of the mask, taunting him and challenging him. Rage slowly began to boil into his body; a dark glare took up residence in his face as he continued to stare into the mask.
In a steady and deliberate motion, Angad lifted his foot and placed it on top of the mask. The crack of the mask rang in his ears but was not satisfying enough for the anger that besieged his mind.
A scream of anguish and pain escaped his lips as he punched his hand into the wall beside him. He watched as the blood dripped from his broken hand, still not satisfied.
He will never be satisfied – no level of pain could recompense for the pain he had caused her.
Like a clap of thunder, another door slam rang through the silent night as Angad disappeared from the roof top.
The eleventh hour had passed.
