Part Two:
Aayush's eyes widened. "I wonder what she'll do," he wondered. "She showed me a lot of attitude. Will she show Tina just as much? And if she does, what will Tina do in return? Oh'this will be fun to watch."
Aayush smiled at the idea. He had a feeling Meghna would win against Tina because unlike Tina, Meghna had some smartness in her.
"Okay," he said. "But I'm not in the pranking. You come up with the idea. And you do it. I just get to sit back and watch."
The smile from Tina's face wiped off. "Why?" she whined. "You're like the master of pranks! You have to help us!"
Aayush looked at Tina and smiled. "Oh come on, Tins. I always do something. This time I just want to sit back and get a good laugh."
"Fine!" Tina exclaimed. "You will get a good laugh for sure."
Aayush sat on his motorcycle and watch Tina and her group make a plan or two on how to make this the worst day in life for Meghna.
Meghna walked in the school gate as she saw Aayush looking at her.
"Ugh!" she thought. "This'this'guy'is so annoying! He ends up everywhere I go! Please God, don't put him in any of my classes'"
Before Meghna's thought was even finished, her face was splashed with water.
"Ah!" she screamed as everyone around her laughed.
Tina's friend rushed to her and said, "Oh I am so sorry. I was trying to aim the bottle at my friend but he moved. I am really sorry. I'll clean your glasses for you..."
She grabbed Meghna's glasses before Meghna could even reply and started cleaning them. Meghna wiped the water off her face.
"Here you go," the girl said handing Meghna back her glasses. Meghna looked at the glasses and they were covered with red paint!
"Hey!" she exclaimed. "What did you do to my glasses?"
The girl took a look at Meghna's glasses and said, "Oh'I am so sorry! But at least they match your clothes now!"
Saying this, the girl walked away laughing.
"Ugh!" Meghna whined as she walked to the office. "Thank God they are only reading glasses. Or I'd be blind all day."
Meghna got to the office and asked for her schedule. She looked it over a couple of times and prayed to God that her day would go smoothly. Meghna walked in her Economics class and saw Aayush once again. She walked to the seat farthest from him, which was in the front of the class and had a seat.
Soon, a young boy with big glasses and short pants walked in the class and stood next to Meghna. "This is my seat," he said in an Indian accent.
"Oh," Meghna said getting up. "Sorry."
"It's okay," he replied. "I can sit beside you. No one sits there anyways."
He made his way around Meghna and sat down. "I'm Abhishek," he introduced himself.
Meghna smiled and introduced herself as well. At least he wasn't one of those stupid people that liked to prank her.
Tina walked in the class and saw Meghna sitting beside Abhishek and laughed. As she walked by Meghna, she said, "Nice match for you."
Tina sat behind Meghna and motioned for Aayush to come and sit beside her. Aayush shrugged and walked her to Tina.
"Hey, Tins," he said as he took a seat. "Planning to play more?"
Tina laughed. "Of course," she replied. "Tina doesn't get enough fun doing it once. And I don't think you have had a good enough laugh yet either, baby."
Meghna's eyes narrowed as she heard Aayush and Tina.
"Oh, I see," she wondered. "That paint thing was a prank. Just like I thought. I knew seeing Aayush's face in the morning wouldn't have a good impact on my day. Ugh."
Soon a middle-aged woman wearing an orange sari walked in the class. "Good morning class."
Everyone stopped talking and said, "Good morning, Mrs. Sharma."
Mrs. Sharma soon started her lesson and Meghna stared jotting down notes. She had already learned this more in depth in America. But some of the vocabulary and phrases were different.
"Ouch," Meghna said as she leaned for a piece of paper that had hit her. Just as Meghna leaned for the paper, Abhishek leaned as well and both of their heads clashed together.
Mrs. Sharma cleared her throat and walked in front of Meghna. "What is your name?" she asked.
Meghna stood up and introduced herself. "Meghna Kashyap," she replied.
"I am sorry, Meghna," she started. "I shouldn't get in any of your personal affairs. But if you can please leave your love stories outside the class, it would be greatly appreciated."
The class started laughing loudly and started making 'oh' and 'awn' sounds.
Meghna sighed. She knew there was no point in arguing. "Sorry Mrs. Sharma. But that was not a love story and you will not see anything like that from me again."
Mrs. Sharma smiled. "That's a nice answer. Okay, back to work class. Enough stories."
As Mrs. Sharma proceeded, Meghna turned around and gave Tina and Aayush a nasty look.
Tina leaned towards Aayush and asked, "Kashyap? I heard Sanjay Kashyap, the new owner of Mehta ' well now Kashyap Industries just moved here from America. Is she his daughter? I mean'come on! How many Kashyaps move to Mumbai everyday?"
Aayush shrugged. "I don't know," he said, thinking of what Meghna had said to Mrs. Sharma and how she hadn't complained on anybody.
Tina stopped asking Aayush questions after a while when she finally got the clue that he was in his own world and wasn't listening to a thing she was saying.
After class ended, Aayush walked up to Meghna and said, "We got off on the wrong foot. Sorry for all the trouble my friends caused today. I won't let them bug you anymore. Friends?"
Meghna looked away and sighed. "Mr. Aayush Whatever," she started looking him in the eyes. "I don't need your sympathy. I come to college to learn. I don't need you or anybody in this college to be sympathetic to me. I don't need any friends here. Especially a friend like you, who sees a decent girl in a salwar and start pulling pranks on her. So if you'll please excuse me, I have to go to my next class."
Meghna walked past Aayush without letting him say another word. Aayush put down his hand and smiled.
"We will be friends," he said in his head. "One day or another, it will happen."
Meghna walked in her next class, History and thanked God that Aayush or Tina weren't in her class. At least she would be able to concentrate in this class. Mr. Saxena, the history professor started his lecture as a boy came in the class and announced, "Meghna Kashyap, Mrs. Sharma wants to see you in the caf for a few minutes."
Meghna stood up and asked, "May I go, Sir?"
Mr. Saxena gave his permission as Meghna stood up to walk out of the class to the caf. She saw Mrs. Sharma and pulled up a seat in front of her. Many students, including Aayush and Tina were eager to know what was going on. Meghna could tell this because all of the sudden, all the conversations ended and the caf was close to dead silent.
Mrs. Sharma, ignoring the silence, started, "Meghna, I am the professor in charge of the shows happening in this school. I heard from the principal that you are missing two days next month for a show. Is it true?"
Meghna smiled, confused, and replied, "Yes, but the show isn't in this college. It's a charity show happening outside the school during college time. I am missing two days because one day is for a full dress rehearsal and the next is the actual show."
Mrs. Sharma smiled. "Is it possible for you to perform the same thing for this school?"
"I am sorry," Meghna apologized. "We can not do that. But you can take students from this college that want to see the show there to see it. They must pay, of course. But the students that pay can come with you to see the show. They can be excused from class for a day. It shouldn't be a problem for me to book the tickets for you if you give me the list of students who want to go by next week."
Meghna could see the excitement in Mrs. Sharma's eyes. Nisha had worked so hard for this show. She was going to donate all the money to the Children's Association. Meghna had promised to help. She had gotten a lot of dances ready in America with her team. They were coming to India a week before the show. Everyone would have a few practices, perform and then go back to America. Karan and Rahul were coming too. Meghna was more excited for the show than anybody else.
Mrs. Sharma accepted Meghna's words and said she'd go talk to the principal. The students that had been listening to their conversation started talking about the charity show as Meghna walked back to her History class.
After a long day, Meghna took a rickshaw back home. She made her way to her room and threw all her books on the bed.
"How was your day, honey?" Seema asked.
"Ugh," Meghna whispered. "Good, Mom!" she replied back.
Meghna freshened up and went downstairs in the kitchen where Seema was making tasty Indian food. "Mom," she said. "I'm going to walk down the streets and look around the city."
Seema smiled. "Okay beta. But take your cell phone in case you get lost." She turned around too look at her daughter but Meghna was already gone.
"I hope she took her phone," Seema said worried.
Meghna walked out of the house as she heard a familiar voice coming from the Singhania Mansion. She tilted her head to the right to see who it was and wished she had never done that.
"Aayush!" she exclaimed softly. "Ugh," she said to herself. "What is he doing here?"
Just then Meghna heard Aayush call Suraj "Dad".
"Dad?" Meghna gasped. "No! He can NOT be my neighbour! No way! Ugh!"
Meghna's day was getting worse. Aayush was turning up everywhere. First the trail, then the gym, then college and now ' beside her house.
"Well," she thought. "I know he will find out sometime that I'm his neighbour. But until this moment comes ' I want to live in peace."
She slowly snuck out of the street without getting noticed by Aayush. Meghna went into many shops and bought many clothes, jewellery, shoes, and other accessories. India was the best place to shop.
Meghna turned around from the shoe store and saw Aayush standing there.
"Hi," Aayush said. "What a coincidence. You're shopping for shoes. I'm shopping for shoes. Haha."
Meghna gave Aayush an obvious sarcastic smile and started to talk away.
Aayush started walking after her. "See. I made you smile. I often have that affect on girls. I knew there was something wrong with you when you were ignoring me. But now I see that you are an ordinary girl, too.
Meghna turned around. "That was a sarcastic smile," she pointed out. "I am not one of those stupid girls that would run after you. Like come on, I have better things to do in life."
As she started walking again, Aayush stood there smiling. "I like that," he said to himself. "She is just so'different."
It was starting to get dark. Most shops were closing. Meghna made a turn and saw mangoes on a cart.
"Yum!" she exclaimed. "I should buy these. Everyone in my family loves them."
As Meghna stood at the cart picking out good mangoes, a voice beside her asked, "Can you pack a dozen good mangoes for me?"
Meghna looked up and saw Aayush. Again!
"Ugh!" she snapped. "What's your problem? Can't you leave me alone for even an hour?"
Aayush laughed. "I wasn't asking you. I was asking the dude selling them. And wow! This is like our 5th meeting today! What a coincidence!"
Meghna dropped the mangoes and corrected, "No! These are NOT coincidences! Stop following me! I mean it! If you do that one more time, I will call the police!"
Aayush laughed. "Relax, baba," he said. "I am going. Take a chill pill. I just wanted to be your friend. No need to get so serious."
Meghna turned around and once more, Aayush stopped her.
"Wait!" he called out. "You forgot your mangoes!"
Without looking back, Meghna said, "I don't want them."
She walked away and Aayush smiled and walked to his motorcycle.
"Not today," Aayush thought. "But Meghna will be my friend one day. She has to give our friendship a chance. After all, I am not that bad of a person. Haha."
Thinking this and about the meeting he had encountered with Meghna, he sped off to a late-night party.
Meghna stood there for a while. "Ugh!" she thought. "This'this Aayush! He is so annoying! What is his problem? If he thinks he has a chance of being my friend, he is wrong. Because I'm not like those stupid girls who always have a crush on stupid idiot guys, like him."
As Meghna was on her way home, she saw a small fountain in the middle of a shopping mall. She was so tired and went to sit down for a while. Soon that while became longer and longer. Meghna looked at little boys playing cricket and little girls skipping rope. After a while, they all left. The mall closed and Meghna noticed how late she saw.
"Uh-oh!" she exclaimed. "I should be home by now."
Meghna got up and looked around. "Which way did I come from?" she asked herself.
Remembering vaguely, Meghna made her way through a school park and past the cricket field. "Umm'that way," she assumed. Soon, Meghna had no idea of where she was and there was not a single soul in sight.
Meghna stood in the middle of tennis courts that were placed in front of a building.
She went inside the building and noticed a party going on. Meghna saw a clerk sitting in the side reading a newspaper.
She politely asked him the directions to her house. The man shook and his head and gestured that he didn't know Hindi. Meghna sighed. The doors to the party were locked and there was no one coming outside who she would be able to ask.
Meghna took her cell phone out and noticed it wasn't charged.
"Ugh!" she grunted. Meghna, along with many shopping bags started back outside. She would find a main road where she would see many cars and ask a nice, decent looking person to give her a ride.
Before Meghna made it to the main road, she saw a motorcycle coming her way. Meghna went and stood in the middle of the road and gestured for it to stop.
Soon the motorcycle stopped and the man took off his helmet.
"You! Again!" she exclaimed looking at Aayush.
Aayush smiled. "I swear, I wasn't following you this time. I was just on my way home from a party. It was boring," he started. "Why are you still out here? Hasn't it been about two hours since you decided to go home?"
Meghna blew her bangs from the front of her eyes and sighed. "I lost my way home," she said slowly. "Can you help me?"
Aayush pretended to clean his ear and gave Meghna a surprised expression. "Pardon me?" he asked. "Can you repeat the question?"
Meghna narrowed her eyes. "Can you please drop me home?"
Aayush smiled and agreed to drop Meghna home.
When Meghna reached the park, she ordered for Aayush to stop.
"What happened?" Aayush asked confused. "The park is where you live? You're homeless?"
"Stop joking," Meghna grumbled. "Why should I tell you where I live? I don't want you stalking me everyday now. You have done that enough times already."
Aayush sighed. "Okay," he said. "If that's what you think of me, I will leave."
He wished Meghna a good night and drove off.
Meghna knew that Aayush wasn't a bad person. But she still didn't want him knowing that she was his neighbour. That would create more than enough problems.
"Where were you?" Seema asked concerned when Meghna returned home. "We were so worried!"
Meghna bit her lip. "Sorry," she said. "I kinda...got lost."
Sanjay and Seema started laughing.
"I told you to take your cell!" Seema said.
"I did!" Meghna argued back. "But it just wasn't charged'" she added softly.
Shilpa walked in laughing. "Smart, sis!" Shilpa exclaimed making Meghna a loser face.
"Shut up!" Meghna exclaimed as she dropped the bags and started chasing Meghna all around.
"What is all this?" Seema asked while Sanjay stopped Meghna from running.
Meghna showed Seema everything she'd bought. After the family had dinner, a man came and dropped off Meghna's suitcase.
"My suitcase!" Meghna exclaimed. "Yes! My licence! My clothes! My life!"
She ran to the bag and carried it upstairs to her room. Meghna took out all her clothes and put them in her closet. After she was done arranging her room, Meghna ran downstairs with her licence and hollered, "I'm going to test drive my car, Dad!"
Sanjay volunteered to go with Meghna and Seema and Shilpa joined in. The family went for a tour of Mumbai in the car. Sanjay and Seema would point out important buildings and landmarks of Mumbai while Shilpa just enjoyed the beauty of the city at night. Meghna, on the other hand, just enjoyed driving her new Porsche around.
The next day, Meghna went for a quick jog. She saw Aayush playing basketball with boys.
"Great," she thought. "Again'my day starts off with seeing his face. Please, God, make my day go smooth today."
Aayush noticed Meghna running near the basketball court and started to walk to her to say hi.
Just then, Nisha and Raj jogged up to Meghna and gave her a hug.
"Hey Meghna!" Raj exclaimed. "I haven't seen you since last year!"
Meghna returned the greeting as the three of them sat down on the grass near them.
Meghna saw Aayush return to play basketball with his friends and smiled. "Thanks God for sending Raj and Nisha Di in at the perfect time!"
"So Meghna," Raj started. "How are Karan and Rahul?"
Meghna thought of the good old days when her, Karan and Rahul were in grade 9 and Raj was in grade 12. They had so much fun hanging out. Meghna would always be with the three of them playing sports, or studying or just chatting. Then Raj graduated and later got married to Meghna's family friend, Nisha. She had been so happy at the wedding. Two of the most important people in her life were getting married.
"Meghna!" Nisha exclaimed. "Where are you!?"
Meghna snapped out of her thoughts and apologized, "Sorry. I was thinking of high school."
Raj laughed and sighed. "Those were the days."
The three of them got lost chatting about the past and soon it was time to go to college for Meghna. Meghna jogged back to her house and got changed into black skinny jeans, a white tank top, a black shrug and black heels. She put on her favourite pair of sunglasses and walked out with her black Sequoia Paris bag.
As she walked out of her room, Shilpa whistled.
"That's what the guys are going to do," she commented.
"Aren't you supposed to be in school?" Meghna asked. "And was that a compliment?"
Shilpa laughed. "First answer: I have some stomach flu so Mom won't let me go. And second answer: that was a compliment because you do look hot."
Meghna grinned and hugged her sister. "It will look even hotter with my car, baby! And I hope you get better soon."
Meghna started down the stairs in a rush and bumped into Aayush.
Aayush saw Meghna and kept staring at her. The day before, she had been dressed so traditionally and today'she looked like she was the owner of this mansion!
Seema walked in the room and smiled. "Aayush, that's my older daughter, Meghna. I believe she is in your college."
Aayush was awestruck. Meghna was his neighbour!
Meghna gave Aayush an evil look then walked away.
Aayush said bye to Seema and followed Meghna out.
"You're my neighbour!?" he asked, not believing what he had just found out.
Meghna turned around and yelled. "Yes. Now stop bugging me!"
Aayush laughed and got his bike ready for college. He was in a partying mood today.
"Wow," he thought. "Such amazing news in the morning and such amazing faces in the morning. Thanks God!"
