K: Oh my God. He's such a big person. And me? I work in a company, while he owns one. What were they thinking when they heard about this proposal. Ugh I'm going to make such a fool of myself. Oh Please God don't let Mama say anything too stupid!
While Kanya was getting ready and panicking downstairs, the doorbell rang and Pammi and Pooja went to answer it. When they opened the door they saw Malika Nanda and two young guys with her.
One of them was her son Ranbir Nanda and the other was his cousin Aditya Nanda. (played by Harshad Chopra!!)
Ranbir Nanda never wanted to get married because he just didn't think he could handle the responsibility. He had never fallen in love. Before coming here he had seen a few girls before but none of them appealed to him. His Mom was forcing him to get married, so he decided he would atleast find a decent girl. He knew he would never love her but atleast a compromise. And the girls his Mom had showed him were rich spoiled brats. After seeing 3 of them, he told his Mom he wanted to marry a good cultured middle- class girl. That's why she went through a marriage bureau and Mrs. Malhotra helped them find the Godboles.
He had seen Kanya's picture and she seemed like a nice decent girl.
Pammi: Please come in. Myself Mrs. Pammi Godbole
M: Namaste Pammi ji. I'm Malika Nanda and this is my son Ranbir and my nephew Aditya.
They go in and Malika and Pammi instantly click. They begin talking about everything from Indian shows, to movies, to their kids, and clothes and fashion
Ranbir and Aditya are sitting quietly next to each other. They feel uncomfortable because Pooja is just looking them up and down. And if they look at her and try to smile, she gives them a cut eye.
Pammi: Pooja Beta, please get them something to drink
R: No Aunty its okay.
Pammi: No beta, don't be shy. Actually Pooja, why don't you tell kanya to come down now.
Aditya nudged Ranbir a little bit and Ranbir sat straight up
Aditya: I hope this ones normal. Her sister and mom seem a little'.
R: shut up will you! I'm already nervous
A: relax buddy. Look shes here
He looked up and saw a girl coming with Pooja. It was kanya. She looked like she was really shy. She walked right past them and went and met his mom.
M: wow both your daughters are so beautiful
Pammi: yes I know
Pooja: Mama!
Pammi: chup! Kanya go meet Ranbir
Kanya didn't want to turn around and she could already feel all eyes on her. She was just hoping and praying she wouldn't do anything dumb.
She went up to the to guys sitting on the couch. They both got up and stood infront of her. It was silent for a moment.
Aditya: Hi. I'm Aditya. Ranbir's cousin.
He put his hand forward to shake it. She didn't know if she should but then she realized she'll look really stupid if she just stands there.
K: Hi I'm Kanya
A: It's nice to meet you.
Kanya was just looking down. She looked at Aditya once or twice but didn't have the courage to look over at Ranbir. But she knew she had too.
R: and umm I'm Ranbir. Ranbir Nanda
She finally turned to him and looked up at him. He was actually really good looking but the ways he was looking at her made her shy.
K: Hi
They finally all sat down and there wasn't much talking. Ranbir was just looking around and once in a while he would look at kanya, who also was just looking around, mainly down at the floor.
Aditya could feel the awkwardness in the air, so he decided he should start talking. He asked Kanya about where she works, where she went to school, her hobbies, favourite sports, movies, etc. Kanya actually felt a lot more comfortable now. Ranbir was also beginning to talk now.
The Mom's had gone to the other room to talk so it was just Ranbir, Kanya, and Aditya now. Aditya's phone rang so he excused himself. He said it would take a while so he went outside.
It went all quiet again in the room. They exchanged a few more words and then Pooja walked by and suggested that Kanya show Ranbir their garden outside.
They were both a little relieved that they left that room. She led him outside and showed him the garden.
R: is that a swing over there?
K: yeah. My dad made it for me and my sisters and my brother when we were little.
R: And its still standing? I mean its old. I don't mean to say that your old. Your young. No your not too young. I mean'okay I don't know what I'm saying.
He started scratching his forehead and could feel that his face was heating up. He made such a fool of himself infront of her.
On the other hand, kanya couldn't help but laugh. He was actually really cute. Sweet. Normal.
K: come we can go sit on it
R: alright
They both walked over and sat on the swing. It was silent again. Ranbir thought this was the perfect time he asked her about this marriage.
R: so umm you know why I came over today. Right?
K: yeah
R thought he should play around with her a little. Mainly because she looked really beautiful when she blushed.
R: why?
K: why what?
R: why do you think I came over today
Kanya felt shy again. She couldn't say it so openly yet. She looked up at him and he was smirking.
She didn't know what to do she got up and was about to walk away when he grabbed her hand.
R: okay I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that
K: No you don't have to be sorry. Its not your fault.
R: please sit down
She sat down next to him again.
R: you know that our parents want us to marry each other. Right?
K: yes
R: but the thing is'
K: I understand if theres someone else. Its okay. I'll just say no to my Mom and then you won't be forced into this.
R: Kanya
Her face shot up. That was the first time he said her name. He said it in a different way. A special way.
R: Kanya, I like you. I promise if you marry me you will never have any problems. I'll give you all the respect you deserve. And I'll take care of you.
He kept on going on about all this stuff but not once did he say to kanya that he would love her. She decided it was best if she asked him
K: and what about love ranbir? Will you ever love me?
R didn't expect her to say that. It came as a bit of a shock. He thought he was doing so good.
R: I'll do that too. But I just don't know when I'll actually fall in love with you
K: you have to give it time. If you don't think you can ever love me, please don't force yourself into this and marry me.
R: No kanya its not that. Listen we'll make this work. I know that you've met a few guys before me and it didn't work but together we can make it work. Please
K thought about this. About ranbir. About the last guy she met. She looked up into his eyes and could tell he was being honest.
K: okay
They talked a bit more and then they heard Pooja calling for them to come in.
They started walking back. Slowly Ranbir held Kanya's hand.
Kanya actually liked this. She could tell he was trying to reassure her that everything would be fine. Once they reached the front door he let go.
Pammi took Kanya inside and Kanya said yes she agreed to this proposal. On the other hand, Malika talked to Ranbir and he said okay as well.
Pammi and Malika exchanged hugs and ate sweets. They decided they would talk further about the marriage later.
M: Actually in 2 days I am going to the US for my nieces wedding. So once I return I will give you a call.
Soon the Nanda's left. Ranbir gave Kanya one last smile before leaving. This melted Kanya's heart.
K thought: Am I falling in love with him? This is to soon. But he's so perfect.
On the other hand Ranbir was confused. He liked Kanya but didn't have strong feelings for her. He didn't want to hurt her but thought about what she said. She said love takes time and maybe that's what their relationship will need. Time.
