Introduction
Kripa Sharma had mixed feelings about returning to her hometown of Ann Arbor, Michigan after spending sixteen long years away from it, making a good life for herself in Miami, Florida. Memories, good and bad, weighed down heavier on her than she would have liked. As a rambunctious seventeen year old, Kripa had vowed to be damned if she ever came back to the town that gave her both her greatest joy and deepest sorrow. She had left everything behind, everyone behind so she could start over. She dared not venture answering the one question that had been at the back of her mind since the night she drove away sixteen years ago: Had she somehow managed to leave her heart behind, too?
She had to come back, for closure. Closure that she had convinced herself she'd gotten over the years, but conviction never reached her heart. Was she really back for closure or would this trip open up past wounds that were all but healed?
Angad Khanna had been having a difficult time dealing lately. By lately, he meant the last three years. Or the last sixteen years, depending on what he was trying to deal with. The last three had been especially hard, suddenly losing his wife Mishti to a bizarre accident, and being left alone to raise their teenaged son. Both he and Prateek (his son) blamed Angad for Mishti's death. If only he'd listen to her. If only he'd let go, and gone back to New York liked Mishti wanted. He couldn't get himself to leave. Ann Arbor was always his home. The place that kept him grounded. So many bittersweet memories came back to him when he walked around town. The gazebo with loose floorboards in the town center, where him and his best friend had hid one night, after being chased by the city police; the stadium, under who's stands he'd shared countless kisses with his first love; the diner in which he'd spend countless hours after school, scheming with his partner in crime to get out of this dingy small town; and last but certainly not least, the hill. The hill was a landmark on its own in his heart. This was the very place he went from being a boy to a man. He was amused to think these places had all been shared with one person: His best friend, his partner in crime, his first love. It had been over sixteen years since he'd laid eyes on that brown-eyed beauty, and he'd given up all hope that he'd ever see her again.
