Part 11: Romance on the highway
"I love you, Kanya."
The words rang in her head, filling her with a warm, sweet feeling. And then, she woke up.
Sunlight streamed through the poorly thatched ceiling of the jhopri. Kanya lifted her head and stared up at Ranbir, sleeping next to her with his arm over her waist.
K: (thinking) Ranbir, tum sote hue bahut cute lagte ho. Bilkul bachhe ki tara.
She quietly lifted his arm off of her and went outside. The early morning rays of the sun peeked over the treetops, illuminating the place with a soft, rosy glow. Even though it couldn't be later than 6 a.m., the Mumbai traffic was already moving. Kanya could hear it in the distance.
"I love you Ranbir,"
"Mmm, me too" Ranbir muttered in his sleep with a smile on his face. He opened his eyes and found himself shirtless on a pile of hay. He looked around and saw his jacket lying in a corner and went over and pulled it on, and went outside, not bothering to zip it up. Outside, he saw Kanya standing, looking worried. She was still wearing the short white dress. Ranbir leaned casually against the hut, observing that Kanya's dress was slightly see-through when she stood fully in the sunlight like that. He smirked, enjoying the sight.
Kanya turned on Ranbir. He immediately wiped the smirk off of his face and adopted a more vacant expression.
K: Ab tum yahaan khade khade kya kar rahe ho?
R: Aur kya karoon?
K: Kyun? Yahaan se nikalna nahi hai kya?
R: Oh, that.
K: Yeah that. Yahaan aao aur meri madat karo.
R: No, I don't think I will.
Kanya whirled around. She walked up to him angrily.
K: Fine! Good! Tum tire puncture karo, humme yahaan, is sunsaan raaste par shauk se ghumao, raasta bhul jaao aur phir mujhpe saare nikalne ke responsibility thopdo!
Kanya had now backed up Ranbir against the wall.
R: BACHAO!
K: Kya kar rahe ho, you stupid saand?
R: (jokingly) Main kya bewakuf lagta hoon? Tum soch rahi hongi ki main shirt nahi pehen raha hoon aur hum dono akele is sunsaan raaste par hai toh tum kuch bhi kar sakti ho? Main tumhe mere izzat pe haath dalne nahi doonga!
K: Shut up!
Ranbir laughs. Kanya backs off and folds her arms, looking very pissed off.
R: Vaise, don't worry. Main Ranbir Nanda hoon. Main kuch bhi kar sakta. Main kuch karta hoon.
K: Fine.
With that, she went into the hut. Ranbir fixed his eyes on the road, determined to flag down any passing cars. As no cars passed, Ranbir's mind began to float back to the last night. He remembered Kanya stealing a glance at his rain-soaked chest... him staring at her drenched body... her beautiful face, asleep...
His gaze wandered towards the hut and suddenly, his eyes were glued to it. He could see, through the holes of the poorly constructed hut, Kanya slipping out of the dress. He shifted so as to get a better view. He wished there were more holes. A bit of skin here... a flash of skin there... he stared as Kanya stepped out of the dress, every molecule in his body screaming to be in there with her. He stared, unabashedly, at whatever little amount of her body he could see, wishing for more.
Inside, Kanya stepped out of the dress and began to comb out her wet hair with her fingers and suddenly felt a tingle on the back of her neck, as if someone were watching her. She whirled around in the hut, but saw no one. Confused, she resumed combing her hair.
Ranbir, so obsessed with Kanya, missed two cars passing by as he stared hungrily at her. Finally when Kanya came out of the hut, once again in the dress, Ranbir quickly zipped up his jacket and fixed his gaze once more on the road.
K: Any luck?
R: No...
K: (murmuring) Saand, ek bhi kaam thik se nahi kar sakte.
R: Kya kaha?
K: Hato, main karti hoon.
R: Yeah right, jaise koi mujhse gazar kar tumhare liye ruk sakta hai.
K: Tum jhopdi mein jaao.
R: Kyun?
K: Bas jaao.
R: Fine.
He went into the hut and watched through a hole. As a car came by, Kanya flipped her hair prettily and waved a hand. The car screeched to a stop. A man came out.
J: Hey, main Jayant. Aapko lift chahiye?
K: Yes please
J: Toh aa jao na.
R: (softly) Kamina saala. Mere biwi pe nazar dalta hai.
K: Ranbir, bahar aao.
Ranbir, still growling, came out of the hut.
J: (frowning) Yeh kaun hai?
K: Yeh mera pati hai.
J: (disappointed) Oh.
They got into the car and drove off, Kanya smiling at Jayant, Jayant looking sadly back at Kanya and Ranbir glaring intensely at Jayant.
