Big Brother producer Endemol is setting up its first Asian subsidiary in India on the back of a two-year output deal with Sony, poaching Star India executive Rajesh Kamat to head operations.
Endemol India will open for business in the country's TV capital Mumbai on January 2, with eight full-time staff and additional freelancers drawn from the local community.
Kamat, who was previously senior vice president and executive committee member at Star India, is being appointed managing director and will oversee the production of new and existing Endemol formats.
While Endemol said it was currently in negotiations with several broadcasters in the country over potential opportunities, the establishment of the Indian outpost has been given a significant initial boost by the deal with Sony Entertainment Pictures.
The two-year output deal follows the success of Endemol formats Operacion Triunfo (aired as Fame Gurukul) and Deal or No Deal (broadcast as Deal Ya No Deal), which have helped raise SET India's market share in their respective time slots.
"We are excited to announce the launch of Endemol India, which will play an important role in India's vibrant entertainment industry," said the company's CEO Joaquim Agut Bonsfills.
"Our formats have already proved their quality with broadcasters and viewers around the globe and we are delighted that Indian viewers will now have the chance to watch our groundbreaking shows."
