Chapter 2

Dadi'sa starts will the youngest to eldest in order. Dadi'sa shows her Ranveer, Manan, and Sahil as her brothers. Suman used to repeat like a singing bird after dadi'sa. Dadi'sa then teaches Suman to call Sindoora as choti chachi, Aakash as chote chacha, Nupur as badi chachi, Brijesh as bade chacha... Devraj as papa and Suhasini as maa'sa... lastly herself as dadi'sa.

Suman repeats after her "Dadi'sa..."

Dadi'sa puts the photo aside and kisses Suman on her forehead. "Meri pyari si choti si gudia..." she says as she cuddles Suman in her laps. Just then Nupur comes in to invite everyone to come for dinner. They all happily joins with the rest of the family members at the dinner table.

Dinner was another happy story of today when Ranveer and Manan cutely argues over who will have their cute sister sit next them. Suhasini easily sorted it out for them by allowing Suman to sit between her two brothers. It was like a small bundle of joy watching Ranveer Suman and Manan getting along well. Sahil who sat next to Manan kept him under control before his love for little sister gets over her comfort limit. Sindoora however thought to herself that these people started acting like this girl has always been a part of this family.

Sindoora thinks to herself "Aur chadao isko apne sir par. Kuch hi dino me sabko akal aa jayegi ki apna aakhir apna hota hai... aur bahar ka humesha paraya hi hota hai."

As everyday routine, dadi'sa gathers the kids in her room to tell stories to the kids before bed time. Today her story was going to be very special as she wanted to tell them about family values. Dadi'sa tells them a story in which different people who had no one else in their lives, are brought together by heavy rain into an old lady's shelter. In the story, that rain continues for few days which was enough to bring all those people together and care for each other, hence finding a family for themselves. So when the rain stops, these people promise each other to stay together as one and care for each other like a true family. Her story touched the kids deeply. Dadi'sa knows to play her role of a potter who moulds the soft hearts of these kids into nice young people they will become one day. When the story finished, Suhasini and Nupur comes in to get all four kids to turn to bed.

Manan~ "Maa... abhi hume aur kahani sun-ni hai." He makes a puppy doll face.

Nupur~ "Phir wahi roz ki zid manan? Aap ki dadi'sa se sirf ek kahani ki baat tay hai na?"

Manan~ "Par maa..."

Nupur~ "Kuch kahani kal ke liye bhi to chodni chahiye ki nahi?"

Manan~ "Acha to phir purani kahani phir se sunle? Suman to aaj hi aayi hai. Usne to purani kahaniya suni hi nahi na?"

Nupur picks Manan in her arms "Aisa hai, aap apni behen ko purani kahaniya kal se roz ek ek kar ke sunana. To wo apse purani kahaniya bhi sun legi aur aap sab dadi'sa ko pareshan bhi kam karoge. Theek hai?"

Manan~ "Theek hai maa. Agar aap itne pyar se kehti ho to theek hai. Par Suman ko saari kahani mai hi sunaunga." He demanded.

Dadi'sa "Acha bhai suna lena, bas?"

Manan cutely nodes after having his demand fulfilled. Nupur takes away Sahil and Manan to tuck them in their beds while Suhasini takes Ranveer and Suman to tuck them in their beds. They all wish each other good night and then head off to their rooms. All four kids have their rooms upstairs across each other. Nupur leads Manan and Sahil to their rooms, first putting Manan to bed then Sahil. Suhasini also does the same. While Suhasini tucks Suman in her bed and kisses her good night, Ranveer stands next to them.

Ranveer~ "Agar raat me darr lage na to mujhe bula lena. Main darr ko ekdum mar kar bhaga dunga."

Suhasini~ "Acha mere sher, chalo ab aapko bhi sona hai na. Aur Suman ko bhi sone do."

Ranveer nodes and then leaves with Suhasini. As they leave Suman's room, Ranveer wishes Suman good night. Suman wishes them good night in return. Suhasini tucks ranveer in bed and then leaves.

Later that night when everyone is deep in sleep, Ranveer wakes up. He looks around and sees that it is still dark. He didn't know why, but he wanted to check up on Suman. So slowly gets off and goes to Suman's room. When he looks inside, he could see her twitching in her bed. Ranveer goes to her.

Ranveer~ "Suman, tum jag rahi ho?" he says as he gets closer to her bed.

Ranveer soon realise that Suman is not awake, but she was cold and sweaty. Ranveer decides to wake her up. Suman abruptly wakes up on Ranveer's attempt to wake her up. Huffing and panting Suman had her fear showing clearly on her face. It was like she was trying to get some air but suffocating and being in dimly lit room didn't help her much either. Ranveer seeing her like this turns on the table light next to him. Suman sees Ranveer beside him and in an instinct just holds his arm.

Ranveer remembered how his father used to calm him down when he used to be scared at night. So, he does the same. Ranveer gently strokes Suman on her head with his free hand, until she calms down.

Ranveer~ "Bhoot ne daraya kya?" he asks innocently once Suman calmed down. But without waiting for an answer he continued "Par tumhe pata hai, main itna strong hoon ki bhoot bhi mujhe se darta hai. Mere aate hi tumhara booth yahan se darr ke bhag gaya."

Suman didn't answer, only held on to his arm.

Ranveer~ "Suman, ab main aa gaya hoon na, tum mat daro. Tum mujhe batao tumhe kis se darr lagta hai. Main uski khoob khabar loonga. Batao mujhe."

But poor little Suman, she was still too little to tell him anything about what scares her so much. Her nightmare remained the same, only her time spent with the Mittal family and the three brothers reduced the frequency of her nightmare.

Ranveer like a caring brother helped Suman to get back to sleep. Even when she fell asleep, Ranveer stayed there for a little longer until he felt sleepy himself. Then he went back to his bed.

Next morning, Sindoora came to Ranveer's room to wish him good morning like she always does. To her surprise and dismay, Ranveer wasn't in his room today. Sindoora was so sure that Ranveer would be in Suman's room that she didn't even think to knock, simply barged in her room. But Suman was there with Suhasini. Sindoora was occupied in her own thoughts she didn't even reply to Suhasini's wishing her good morning.

Suhasini~ "Kya hua Sindoora? Tum pareshan lag rahi ho."

Sindoora~ "Apne Ranveer ko dekha kya? Pata nahi Itni subah subah kahan chala gaya. Roz to wo mere uthane tak sota rehta hai."

Suhasini~ "Bas itni si baat? Subah se Manan cricket bat lekar ghoom raha tha. Usne hi aaj sahil aur ranveer ko uthaya hai. Theeno bhai bahar garden me cricket khel rahe hain. Aur to aur, apne saath Aakash aur Brijesh ko bhi cricket khelne me laga liya hai."

Sindoora~ "Itni subah cricket?"

Suhasini~ "Tum to manan ko jaanti ho. Bas aaj subah jaldi uth gaya aur cricket ki ratt laga li. Koi usko samjha paya hai aaj tak?"

Sindoora~ "Theek hai bhabhi'sa, main... khud jaa kar dekhti hoon."

Sindoora leaves to go check in the garden. Just like Suhasini had told her, Manan Sahil Ranveer Aakash and Brijesh were all playing cricket in the garden. With kids, even Aakash and Brijesh had become kids themselves. As always Sahil was trying to get Manan to play fair but Manan was a kid who listens to no one.

Sahil~ "Manan, chote chacha ne catch kiya, isliye tum out ho. Ab ranveer ki baari hai."

Manan~ "Nahi, wo to trial ball thi. Main abhi out nahi hua. Abhi meri turn baki hai."

Sahil~ "Tumhari to har bar tum out hote ho to trial ball hoti hai. Aisa karoge to hum tumko cricket nahi khilayenge."

Manan~ "Kyun nahi khilayenge? Aisa thodi hota hai. Mere bina aapki team to poori hi nahi hoti hai."

Sahil~ "Koi baat nahi hum choti team ke saath ki khel lenge."

Manan~ "Yeh to aap galat kar rahe ho bhai. Aise apne chote bhai ke saath karta hai kya koi?"

Sahil~ "Ranveer bhi to tumhara chota bhai hai. Tum jab tak out nahi hoge to uski bhi to bari nahi ayegi. Ab tum nahi galat kar rahe apne chote bhai ke saath?"

Manan~ "Aap log mujhe out nahi kar paate to usme meri kya galti?"

Sahil~ "To kya main tumhare liye jaan boojh kar out nahi hota?"

Manan~ "To theek hai. Koi trial ball nahi. Main bhi out. Chal Ranveer... ab tumhari baari. Ache se khelna." He handed the bat to Ranveer and sends him on the crease.

Aakash and Brijesh were mostly enjoying their little game and watching over so they don't accidentally get hurt. Just then Aakash notices Sindoora standing by them watching.

Aakash~ "Arre Sindoora, good morning. Tum bhi bacho ke saath khelogi?"

Sindoora~ "No, no. Main cricket nahi khelti. Wo to main bas dekhne aayi thi ki bache kya kar rahe hain. You all carry on." She starts to leave.

Just then chaman ji arrives to announce that breakfast is ready and leaves.

Manan~ "Offo, sab log game ke beechme bulane aa jaate hai. Koi baat nahi, hum baad me continue kar lenge."

Sahil~ "Baad me to kabhi continue hota hi nahi hai. Tumhe apni bari pehle chahiye hoti hai isliye tum humesha new game hi start karte ho."

Manan~ "Koi baat nahi iss bar new game me Ranveer ko first turn denge."

Sahil agrees and they all head back inside for breakfast. When they arrive at the table, dadi'sa and Devraj were the only ones present. Nupur comes in with chaman ji carrying the breakfast trolley. Suhasini is climbing down the stairs with Suman. Seeing Suman, Ranveer and Manan runs to her side.

Manan~ "Suman, breakfast ke baad tum bhi humare saath cricket khelogi?"

Ranveer~ "Arre par ladkiyan cricket thodi hi khelti hain."

Manan~ "To phir hum kuch aur khel sakte hain."

Suhasini~ "Khelna baad me, pehle sabke saath breakfast karlo."

Manan Ranveer agreed with Suhasini and went to the table to join everyone. This time they saved a seat for Suman between them.

Manan~ "Chachi, aaj bhi Suman humare saath bethegi na?"

Ranveer~ "Kya roz hum aise hi saath me baithenge? Badi chachi, baithne do na."

Suhasini~ "Theek hai, saath me baith jao."

Ranveer and Manan were very happy to hear that they can have Suman sit near them every day. Their cuteness, watching them sitting together and taking care of each other that instantly won every heart in the family.

Sindoora on the other hand, not so much. "Dining table par sab khana khane ke liye baithte hai. Kaun kahan kiske pass baithta hai iss se kya farak padta hai? Mujhe to nahi samajh me aata."

Dadi'sa~ "Badi ho gayi hai par bacho se bhi kam samajh hai issko. Jiss se hum pyaar karte hai, saath me rehna pasand karte hai... usske saath hi baithna chahte hai. Bache agar saath me baith kar khana khate hain iss ka matlab ki unke beech mein pyaar hai. Yahi pyaar ek pariwaar ko bandhe rakhta hai. Kuch samajh me aaya?"

Sindoora shook her head to show that she understood but the problem wasn't whether she understands or not, her problem was other people don't understand her point of view. But it wasn't like she could do anything about it as whole family seemed to her to be under some type of spell that made them love this young girl.

The time flies when everything is going well. For Mittal family too, everything was all sunny and bright since Suman came into their lives. Days became weeks, weeks became months, and month became years. The kids grew into teenagers as the elder grew older. Their businesses bloomed which kept Devraj, Brijesh, Aakash and Sindoora occupied most of their day. In the end of the day, only comfort was to still come home to the cheerful evenings spent with the rest of the family.

Devraj~ "So kids, how was the school today?"

Sahil~ "It was nice bade papa. I got my test scores."

Brijesh~ "And? How did you fair?"

Sahil~ "I aced them as usual. But I want to do more than just studies and sports."

Brijesh~ "What you want to do? Any martial arts or something?"

Manan~ "Martial arts and sports are cool!"

Sahil~ "I already finished with martial arts training last summer. This time I wanted to try something different. Like music for instance."

Manan teases "Girls like guys who can play guitar. They say guitar makes guys look cool!"

Brijesh~ "Who says that? What is Manan talking about?"

Sahil~ "Nothing dad. He likes to just tease people every now and then."

Manan whispers to Sahil "Yeah, that girl you saw in the music class said nothing. You just joining the same music class for the fun of playing the guitar and showing off to other boys."

Sahil stares at Manan to quiet him, which temporarily worked. Aakash brings the conversation back to the main topic.

Aakash~ "So, we heard about sahil, what about you three. How was your day?"

Manan~ "I pranked a guy from my class. But he deserved it."

Aakash~ "What did he do to deserve that?"

Manan~ "He asked if my sister would go out on a date with him. I wanted to punch him, but a prank would still do the trick without getting me in trouble with any teachers. You see, I keep my promises." His reply surprised everyone as Manan never admitted to any of his pranks before.

Nupur~ "What promise?"

Manan~ "Suman took a promise from me that I won't do anything stupid that gets me into trouble at school. She said that if I do it will go on my record. So, I won't break my promise to her."

Nupur~ "Suman dear, you should have asked this promise from Manan bhai ten years ago. At least it would have saved me lots of visits to your school."

Dadi'sa~ "I would suggest you don't push your luck there. You already know they always back each other as a team. How many times have Suman supported them in their mischiefs?"

Manan~ "No one ever says anything to her since she is the youngest and a girl. She always get away easy. Not that I'm complaining, ok? I will admit my hand in those mischiefs in a blink of an eye... any time, any day... if I have to, to save her. She does the same for us."

Suhasini~ "You misuse her like an escape goat. What if she gets in some kind of trouble because of you three? Have you thought of that?" she pointed out.

Ranveer~ "That will never happen. We three won't let anything like that happen badi maa."

Sahil~ "When we were little it was different. It has been ten years since then and we know our responsibilities well."

Manan~ "Suman is our youngest sister and she prioritises over all the mischiefs and other stuff we do. So you don't have to ever worry. We will always keep her safe."

Chapter 3

Sindoora silently heard the whole conversation without giving any opinions of her own. But it certainly clears up all the things she would like to say to her son at first chance she gets. As usual Sindoora visits ranveer before bed that night. Sindoora entered ranveer's room without making any noise.

Ranveer~ "Mom, I'm fourteen now, you know. It is not considered cool when boys are still babied by their moms. He said without looking up from his book.

Sindoora~ "Those boys don't know me then, I never babied my boy. I just want to catch up with my son. I work all day with your dad, so this is the only chance I get to spend time with my son.

Ranveer~ "Why don't you ask dad to take care of work while you spend time with me? Dad always takes time out so he can be with me. Why can't you?

Sindoora~ "Because he can rely on me to be able to take care of work while he is not there.

Ranveer laughs "That almost sounded like you don't rely on dad to handle work by himself. You know what mom, you don't have to make excuses if you don't want to spend time with me.

Sindoora~ "Ranveer, how could you even think that? You are my son and I love you more than anything. I want to spend time with you."

Ranveer~ "Then why don't you?

Sindoora~ "I only want to spend time with my son alone. If I do that while you are around everyone then everyone will think I'm trying to keep my son away from them. I don't want my son to be away from everyone just to be with me.

Ranveer~ "So you come to spend time with me only at night when no one else is around?

Sindoora~ "You can say that.

Ranveer~ "Ok mom. So what are we going to talk about tonight?

Sindoora~ "How about... you tell me about your day?

Ranveer~ "Nothing but the usual. How was your day at work?

Sindoora~ "My day? Had few board meetings... very boring... and signed up a new contract... then went to lunch with the clients... and they took all the rest of my day. Your dad always wanted this contract but I just want to get this over with, because I cannot spend another hour with them.

Ranveer~ "They can't be that bad...

Sindoora~ "They are not bad, they are just...

Ranveer~ "Boring because of their chit-chat?

Sindoora~ "You know how I hate people who can go on and on about their stuff. It is so annoying.

Ranveer~ "It comes as a part of your job mom. You have to put up with them for your business.

Sindoora~ "Yeah, you are right. Enough about me, back to about you.

Ranveer~ "About me? There is nothing to discuss mom.

Sindoora~ "What do you mean there is nothing? You are fourteen now ranveer. You can't tell me there is nothing more in your life than studies and your sports. Look at you... smart and handsome boy... also good at sports...

Ranveer~ "Ok mom, hit a break there. I know where you are trying to go but believe me, I only want to excel in what I'm doing in my life.

Sindoora ignores him "You know when your dad was thirteen, he had three girlfriends... or more like friends who had major crush on your dad. But your dad had eyes only for one... can you guess who she was?

Ranveer~ "Mom! I have heard it more times than I can count...

Sindoora ignores him again "Yes, it was me. Your dad took 2 years to even come to me simply to say hi. Luckily for him I had crush on him too. We dated for seven years. In the end I had to take the first step and propose your dad or he would never have had the guts to ask me. She smiles.

Ranveer looks at her and Sindoora realised "Oh! Sorry... I did it again didn't I? Well I asked if you have any girl you like at school. You can always share it with me.

Ranveer~ "I only want to excel in everything like Suman. She is younger than me... she got admission an year ahead of her age... She is in same class as mine and performs best among everyone. If not better then I want to be at least like her.

Sindoora forgot everything hearing suman's name from ranveer.

Ranveer~ "Mom? What happened? You suddenly became so quiet.

Sindoora~ "Nothing... just... I don't like having suman around you.

Ranveer~ "That again? I don't understand why you have problem with suman? Suman may not be related to us by blood, but blood doesn't make bonds. She came in this family and is a part of this family whether you like it or not.

Sindoora~ "I will not tolerate you taking her side in front of me ranveer! She maybe living in this family but it doesn't change the fact that she is an orphan.

Ranveer~ "No one uses that word in context with suman. Dadi'sa has told you this specifically... many times even. Why do you always have to treat suman like this? She was so little when that accident with her family happened. It is not like she was at fault. Don't you feel anything for her besides this hatred?

Sindoora~ "I just don't like her and I certainly do not want to talk about her. You will stay away from her. End of story! Now you should get back to bed, it is late. I will go back as well. She leaves to get back to her bed as well, without looking back.

Ranveer~ "Sahil bhai, manan bhai consider suman as only their sister... but suman means more to me than just a sister mom. She has been my best friend in these past years. You will never understand... you don't even care to understand. He said to himself.

Thinking about suman, ranveer decides to go to her again. He gets out of bed and goes to suman's room to check up on her. Once a while suman still gets her nightmare and every time ranveer had been there with her. Tonight as well, something triggered that nightmare again. As ranveer enters suman's room, he can hear suman's restless breathing. Ranveer rushes to suman immediately.

Suman had clutched on to her pillow as her breathing grew frantic. Suddenly she woke up out of fear. Ranveer gently took suman in his arms. Suman held on to ranveer as well in need for a gentle assurance that the worst has passed. Ranveer caressed suman.

Ranveer whispered to her "Same nightmare again?

Suman nodded once her breathing slowly returned to normal. Ranveer kept stroking her head to assure her that she is safe with him.

Ranveer~ "What did you see?

Suman replied once she gained more of herself "It was clearer than before this time. I was trapped in a room... fire everywhere... smoke was making it hard for me to breathe or see anything... I was trying to scream but no one heard me... I was so scared. her eyes filled up with tears as she described her nightmare.

Ranveer wipes off her tears "Shhh... it was just a nightmare. I'm here with you. You are safe.

Suman~ "Ranveer...

Ranveer~ "Yes suman?

Suman~ "Why do I keep getting the same nightmare?

Ranveer~ "You probably don't remember as you were very little. Dadi'sa told us that is how you were found... rescued from the fire. Maybe your nightmare is a part of that memory.

Suman~ "I can recall nothing about the accident. But if it happened then, why does it still scare me now?

Ranveer~ "I don't know suman... but I want you to always remember this, I will always be there with you to fight your fear. You will never have to go through it ever again as I will always protect you. Understood?

Suman nodded.

Ranveer continued "Alright then, you should go back to bed. I will stay here until you fall asleep.

Suman~ "What if my nightmare returns? her fear clear in her eyes.

Ranveer~ "In that case I will stay with you here all night if I have to. He replied in an instinct.

Suman~ "You cannot stay here ranveer... I must learn to fight my fears on my own!

Ranveer~ "You will someday... until then I will always be there by your side.

Suman~ "But...

Ranveer put his finger on her lips "Shhh... no buts. Go back to sleep. No matter what anyone thinks or says, I'm not leaving your side. Now say nothing more and sleep. We have a school to go to tomorrow.

Ranveer got suman to relax and try to fall asleep right in his arms. But as suman fell asleep, ranveer started to think it over in his head...
"Why can't I leave suman? I may have thought earlier that suman is more like my best friend than my sister... but the way I feel for her... it's not normal. Her fears, her sadness... it all feels like my own. Is it because I'm the only one who has been aware of her fears, her nightmares, her weaknesses and her strengths?

Ranveer didn't realise when he fell asleep holding suman in his arms while thinking about what relation he has with suman. But come the first light of the day, ranveer woke up. He gently settles suman back on her bed and returns to his room. Ranveer climbs in his bed and tries to catch some more sleep before he has to get ready for school. An hour later, Sindoora arrived to wake him up.

Sindoora~ "Ranveer... come on son. Wake up, you need to get ready for school.

Ranveer woke up but turned away from her. Sindoora understood so she continued.

Sindoora~ "Ranveer... Still angry with me about last night? You know it is my nature son. I just cannot change it. If you will stay upset with me you know my whole day will be spoiled. You are my good luck charm ranveer, please talk to me...

Ranveer wanted to reply but he noticed how his mom not once said she is sorry for what she said last night. He thought "No sorry, no regrets mom? Does this mean you meant every word you spoke against suman? Maybe I'm too young to understand the reason behind your hate towards suman. But if growing up means losing all compassion towards other people then I don't want to grow up like this. Dadi'sa always tries to make us mature, understanding, and compassionate towards other people... that is what makes us a good person. She is right that you have grown up but you haven't grown past your immature thinking about other people.

Just then Suhasini stops by saving ranveer from keep on pretending to be asleep in front of sindoora.

Suhasini~ "Good morning Sindoora. What happened? Ranveer don't wish to go to school today?

Ranveer jumps right up "No way badi maa. I wouldn't miss my school today.

Suhasini~ "Oh, is that so? Why is that? What is so special today?

Ranveer~ "That I will tell you after I come back from school. Right now I must hurry and get ready or I'll be late. He ran to bathroom to get ready. Not once ranveer looked towards Sindoora.

Sindoora felt sad that ranveer treated her this way, but she was sure that ranveer will forget it soon and be normal with her again. What Sindoora kept ignoring is that her son was growing up into a strong individual person who had lot of influence in his life from his dearest dadi'sa. Sindoora is ranveer's mom... but he shared more traits and qualities with his father's side than his mother.

The kids joined everyone for breakfast, then left with the driver to go to the school. Sahil turned back in his seat to speak with ranveer.

Sahil~ "Ranveer... how did you managed to convince your teacher to pair you with suman for the project?

Ranveer~ "It was easy really. I convinced suman to ask the teacher to pair us up.

Manan~ "That would always work. He made fun.

Sahil~ "Please, I'm serious.

Manan imitates a character from superhero movie he watched recently "Why so serious mate?

Sahil~ "Manan, enough. Don't crack jokes right now.

Ranveer~ "Is it about that girl manan bhai was meantioning yesterday?

Manan~ "See, even ranveer understands. And he is younger than us both. You shouldn't keep secrets from your younger brothers sahil bhai. We may be younger than you but we still understand it just as good as anyone else.

Sahil~ "What about suman? Wont it have wrong effect on her?

Ranveer~ "You don't worry about her. She knows us better.

Sahil looks at their driver. Manan and ranveer stares at him as well. Their driver notices them starring and feels little awkward.

Driver "Sahil baba, I heard nothing... I know nothing... I will say nothing.

Manan~ "Smart. Good for his own benefit. So problems sorted. Now, where were we sahil bhai? Oh yes, don't hide anything from your brothers sahil bhai.

Sahil narrates to them about his crush on a girl in music class who is a pianist. He added that recently their music teacher has paired them up in teams of two to work on old known tunes assigned to them. Now he wants help in getting paired with that girl for the assignment. Manan starts to suggest stupid ideas like blackmailing or bribing the teacher which doesn't even sit well with sahil.

Sahil~ "That is why I don't ask you manan... you suggest only stupid ideas, nothing useful.

Ranveer~ "How about you talk to the girl and ask her if she wants to be your partner for the assignment?
