Come on Baldev...Pick the phone...Why does he not pick my phone up???Aur koi bada kaam kaaz hai kya uske paas jo mera phone utane ki fursat nahi mil raha hai usko???? rattled Veera.
It was almost a week now that she could not speak to him. He was angry with her.
For what??? NO reason...or atleast she thought so. They were supposed to meet... She got held up...did not remember...whatever...he waited in rain...(Oh God...Does not pind have enough shelters..why should he wait in rain?) He fell sick...She did go to meet him (mind you)... but he denied seeing her..So what else should she do now or rather what else he expected her do?????
Inspite of all the baashans Veera gave to herself (for a change), she couldnot get over the thought of Baldev. She loved him and she missed him lots. Also, there was this love proposal pending in her calendar...She should have proposed last week but could not and now that duty of hers was on her backlog list.
Veera: Well today is a new day and it will be new efforts from her side to propose to Baldev. I will go to his home and all other hangouts..I will speak to him today of my love for him...what come it may. (She heard someone talking downstairs and came down to see who it was)
Ratan: Baldev puttar...please come. Long time..you have forgotten us or what. Please sit down. Will you have tea?
Baldev: (smiling) No chachiji..thank you.
Ratan: Kuch kaam tha kya..itne subah subah tumhe dekne ko mil raha hai...
(Veera rushed down on hearing Baldev's voice. She was happy that finally Baldev has let go of his anger and akad..he has come down to meet her at her home...she smiled at Baldev and was about to say something when she heard her Gunjan bhabhi coming down)
Gunjan: Arrey Veerji...aap itne subah subah jaane ke liye ready ho gaye.
Baldev: Haan Gunjan...I am leaving by the 8 AM bus..just bring me those things so that I can take them along.
Ratan: Where are you going Baldev?
Baldev: woh chachiji...mein chanchali didi ke yahan jaa raha hoon...She has brought a new house and wants my help...So I thought I will stay with her for a couple of weeks, settle her down in the new place...
Gunjan: Yeh leejiye Veerji...She handed over a packet to Baldev and said...These are two really cute kurtas that me and Ranvi brought for Chanchali di...please do give them to her and also loads of our love...please tell her we will come to meet her soon...
Baldev received the packets thanked Ratan and left soon.
Veera stood confused. He was still mad at her? He did not even give her a glance; forget about smile...he didnot bother to tell her that he was going away that too for two weeks and not even a bye...Worst of all he behaved as if she never existed. She slowly walked back to her room. She again called Baldev but he had switched off his phone. A strange kind of uneasiness took over her. She thought she was feeling sick but little did she know that this sickness was to teach her a few lessons - lessons in love so that she understands the real sense and essence of love.
It was past couple of days that Baldev had come to stay with Chanchali. Chan loved her little brother. She had taken an instant liking for him the very first time she met him. He had a kind of liveliness that was almost infectious. The person in his company cannot have a dull moment. He was so cheerful, caring, loving, sincere, witty and above all human. Yes, he was also headstrong and little egoistic but his goodness makes up for all that. But strangely enough she found his witty, lively side missing this time around. He helped her with her shifting, and arrangements and she was settled now. Never in her life has she been shown so much of love and care like how Baldev did in the past two days. He was so protective of her and never allowed her to even lift a small piece of furniture..It was his duty and he will not see his sister do hard work, he said.
Baldev was seated on the floor and was watching TV when Chan came and sat near him. He did not see her coming and was lost in his thoughts.
Chan: Baldev...kahan kho gaya hai?
Baldev: Ahh..nothing di...bas avi...
Chan: Well...how are all others in pind? I mean your friends, your cricket team and all
Baldev: They are all fine di..nothing significant.
Chan: Oh...then how is your Veera, I mean friend Veera?
Baldev: Struggling hard to hold back the rush of tears...ah...Veera is ok (I think)He grew quiet.
Chan: Tujhe nahi lagta ki tujhe bol deni chahiye?
Baldev: (Stunned)...ki ..ki bolun di??
Chan: The truth...that you love her and want her in your life.
Baldev: (Even more stunned)...Di...aapko kaise??
Chan: Baldev...I realized this the very first time I saw you rattling away about Veera...the vibrancy in your voice for her was mirroring the feelings in your heart for her. If that is the case why not you voice it out to her.
Baldev: (Now in tears that choked his voice)..nahi di. Mein aisa nahi kar sakta...pehle bhi mein ne hi izhar kiya tha lekin usne tho mere pyar ka mazzak hi bana diya... I cannot take it anymore. I donot even know what she feels for me...All I know is she takes me for granted. I am a friend of convenience for her and she will never give that place in her heart for me that any lover yearns for. I am hurt beyond words di...She is life for me but she doesn't seem to consider me even a part of her life. Her Veerji is everything for her. I don't object but she needs to realize that life doesnot start and end with Veerji. There are others as well who need her attention and and ...love.
Chan could see how hurt her brother was. Is there anything she could do????Yes, she can try to find out what is in Veera's heart but otherwise these two need to help themselves to come out shining in the test of love...Nobody else can help them, she thought.
Pritampura's sunrises were no more beautiful for Veera. All that gave her peace and smile in her life now seemed to irritate her to no lengths. Her Veerji's regular song practice was giving her a little peace but when the song turns out to be romantic, she instantly transports herself to thinking about Baldev. Her Gunjan Bhabhi's chat and nok-jhok with her Veerji reminded her of her sweet-sour fights and kit pits with Baldev. Food seemed more a punishment for her as she was never feeling hungry. Even her Chaiji's "phurrr" failed to evoke a response from her. She did not feel like dressing up anymore. She felt as if someone has snatched away the lively part of her life and her inside was now filled with darkness.
She now loved sunsets. She was counting sunsets...every sunset was bringing the day Baldev would be back, closer. She sat at all the places they used to meet. She remembered each and every little thing that he did and said. Reliving the moments only seemed to give some peace now.
She wandered around the pind when she was caught in rain. Rain did not bother her but the sweet tickling it gave on her skin reminded her of Baldev. His touches tickled her sometimes. She stood in the rain wanting more of those tickles. Finally when she reached home she was already coughing and running a slight fever. Her Veerji was worried. Bheeji made her lie down and gave her kada to drink and some other meds.
Veerji sat beside her for some time but had to soon leave as there was another recording that night. Gunjan accompanied Ranvi. Bheeji and Chaiji left after some time leaving Veera to get some good sleep. But sleep...where was sleep?...It stood thousands of kilometers away from her ...sleep left her the very day Baldev left. She badly needed some company , atleast someone to talk to. She felt so lonely tonight. She remembered how Baldev tended to her fever in Polland. He refused to leave her side even for a moment...He sat beside her untill she was ok...assuring her of his presence...She also remembered the day she failed to show up on their supposed meeting. He too fell sick. Did she take care of him?? Forget that, Did she even enquire if he was fine, atleast the next day??? No.
She woke up on her bed as if she just had an electric shock. How could I be so insensitive? He waited for me...Did I bother to inform him, He got drenched because of me and fell sick. I forgot that I had to meet him...How could I...afterall it was me who wanted to speak to him not otherwise...Just because Veerji had recording, I forgot all other things .I could have informed him or atleast messaged him. What had gotten in to me? She realized her folly. A silent tear fell from her eyes as realization dawned on her. She couldnot imagine how Beldev would have felt at her insensitiveness towards him. He would have thought the she has taken him for granted. Was that the case? No , he was important for her. She loved him but why did she not remember him? That was because she always thought that he would understand her. She even had to make things clear to her Veerji, but Baldev usually understood without her telling. But she had taken things a little far and she had to do the amends...She awaited sunrise...
The mobile was ringing...
Chan: Hello...who is this?
Veera: Chanchali di...sassriakal...How are you?..This is Veera.
Chan was glee with happiness...She silently went to Baldev's room and put the mobile on speaker and signaled him to listen..
Chan: Haan Veera...bolo.. I am good.. Tum kaise ho?
Veera: woh...mein teek hun...
Chan: Aur batawo...baki sab kaise hai...tere veerji, Gunjan, bheeji aaur chaiji..?
Veera: Sab teek hai didi.
Chan: Kaise phone kiya...kuch kas baat hai kya?
Veera: Nahi di..bas aavi. Aapka number liya Gunjan bhabhi se aur socha ki pooch lun ki aap kaisi ho...naye jagah pe?
Chan: Bas veera just settling down. Aur kuch???
Veera: Di...woh... Baldev kaisa hai?
Chan: (Trying hard not to laugh) Haan...woh teek hai. Baat karna chahogi...
Veera: Please di...mujhe usse baat karni hai..please usse boliye na ki mujse baat Karen.Woh meri phone hi nahi utta raha hai.
Chan: Handing over the phone to Baldev...left the room.
Baldev: Haan bolo...
Veera: (Felt as if she had just splashed cold water on her face after a tiring day)
Baldev: Veera bolo...sun raha hun..
Veera: When are you coming back?
Baldev: Tum se matlab...Whenever I feel like coming.
Veera: Phir bhi..when will you be back?
Baldev: I have not decided. I was actually thinking that I will find a job here and settle down here.
Veera: Mujhe bhi wahan ek nauri mil hi jayegi na???
Baldev: A little flushed...What?
Veera: I too will get a job there right, two incomes will be good to run house smoothly.
Baldev: (He did understand what she meant but he wanted to hear more) Well...what are u saying. I did not understand.
Veera: (In the most intimate voices) Baldev...I love you. I cannot live without you. The past two weeks passed like a decade for me. You want to settle there, no problem. I will come there..but I want to be with you..always.
Baldev: (Too shocked for words)..Veerakadi tu yeh kya keh rahi hai?
Veera: Can I come there today. What time is the bus from here?
Baldev: (Shocked)Hey...wait...no no ...you don't come alone... I am coming...Just another six hours ..I will be there...(and even before Veera hung up...Baldev started packing his things much to the amusement of his Chanchali didi)
Veera's two weeks were a decade for her..but Baldev's six hours was a century for him...He even thought of getting out of the slow moving bus and running as fast as he could. He also decided to go straight Veera's house to meet her...As soon as the bus halted...he jumped out. It was 8 PM. How will he walk in to Veera's house at this hour?
His thoughts were suddenly interrupted when he saw his Veera waiting for him and running in to his arms. She kissed him on his cheeks and held him tight for a few minutes...
Baldev: Veerakadi...tumhe tho bukaar hai.. You are burning and you came here to see me at this hour?
Veera: Fever will not kill me but your absence will. Please don't leave me again Baldev.
Baldev lifted her up in his arms and took her to the nearest tree's shade and hugged her again. He placed soft kisses on her smooth skin. Veera closed her eyes to take in the sweet stirring that Baldev was creating in her. She felt bliss.
Baldev: Waise Veerakadi...if you settle down with me in a far off land will you not miss your Veerji?
Veera: Haan I will miss him but when you are not around me I miss myself...
I love you Baldeva.
Baldev and Veera have travelled the path of love a few miles...but there are still miles to go...
