Hi Everyone 😃
Back with another one of my friend's oneshots. I thought would be nice to share it with you all. 😳
My friend and I had recently been discussing Gunjan's involvement as a catalyst for VeeBa growing closer (the HUG etc). Seeing as Gunjan is showing signs of hostility towards Veera, we think another confrontation is on the cards.
My friend says that this is set shortly after that confrontation. Imagine what you will about what was said.
Ok, here goes.
Hope you all enjoy it. 😛

Lean on Me

It is twilight. Darkness has descended suddenly upon the three male figures loitering on a street corner in Pritampura. On noticing the sudden passage of time, the leader of the trio glances at his watch and decides to continue this conversation at a lighter hour. Yawning loudly, he clasps both of his companions on their shoulders and says with a crooked grin, that all men need their rest and he will meet them in the morning.

He strolls leisurely through the streets, enjoying the drop in temperature that the night has brought. The slight breeze tickles his bare forearms, ripples playfully in the folds of his pink kurta. It blows softly at the dark, wavy curls upon his head prompting both hands to rise and tame his locks once more. His gravelly footsteps echo in the seemingly deserted village square.

I wonder if Biji will have anything for me to eat?

He is scratching his stubble thoughtfully when he freezes at a sound disturbing the stillness of the evening. Dropping his hand from his face, he strains his ears to identify the noise.

Nothing.

He Is beginning to walk again when the noise paralyses him once more. It is clear now. The sound of sobbing washes over him in agonising waves. It surges forcefully through his ears, filling his head completely. He frowns in confusion at the sudden ache in his chest. As the sobs continue he is surprised that he can feel the imprint of two small hands holding tightly onto his back, although he is completely alone in the square.

Without a thought, he gravitates towards the sound and turns a corner. He feels the air leave his lungs and he staggers slightly.

She is sitting upon the edge of a large, stone cube. Her back is shaking with the intensity of the sobs racking her small frame. The soft wind is teasing her long raven tresses, dancing around her shoulders. Both of her elbows rest upon her jeans as she buries her fingers into her hairline, hiding her face in her palms.

The ache in his chest is growing. He shuts his eyes tightly as her cries increase, turning his head away from the painful sight. He tries taking a step backwards, but his feet refuse to move. Sighing, he opens his eyes and finds his stare locked upon her form.

Gazing intensely, he slowly moves towards her. He rounds the edge of the stone cube and silently sits beside her.

Her movements still as she registers that she is not alone. His dusky, pink cotton sleeve is brushing the bare skin of her shoulder.

Swallowing quickly, she removes her hands from her face and turns to him. She does not look surprised at his appearance. Her dark eyes glisten with unshed tears, hurt seeping from their corners and cascading down her cheeks. Her hands shake slightly as they lie in her lap.

His caramel pools gently hold her gaze, engulfing the pain of each teardrop. He feels them prick and sting his insides as he buries them in his heart, holding onto them so that she does not have to.

Her eyes widen at his tender stare and she turns her face towards the ground, a rosy hue rising upon her cheekbones. She feels his shoulder leave her side. Her features crumple in distress, and she almost cries out in anguish before she feels his right hand encircle her right shoulder.

His touch is soft, yet he is branding her with his fire.

He slowly pulls her into a half embrace, his arm tightening around her. Instinctively she tilts her head slightly to the left, nestling herself in the hollow nook between his shoulder and neck. Her warmth floods through his kurta, sinking into his skin. It simmers in his veins, pumping powerfully into his heart. A soothing balm upon the ache in his chest.

He has fixed his stare directly ahead. The boyish lines of his face are smooth, yet a silent storm rages in his honeyed gaze.

He cannot tolerate her tears but he cannot, will not, leave her.

Minutes pass. He glances down at her and the sight punches him in the stomach. Her large eyes are closed, the shudders have left her body. The storm settles as his eyes soften and rest peacefully on her face.

She opens her eyes slowly, confusion swirling in their murky depths. She lifts her gaze to meet his. He watches horrified as her eyes fill with watery sadness once more. Her lips are quivering.

I am not going to let this happen, he thinks determinedly.

Without breaking their eye contact, he lowers his left hand towards her ankles and mimics a twisting motion. Her stare follows his hand, and her bewildered expression fades as she realises what he is doing. Her mind fills with his velvety words...

I may not have been able to make you laugh, but I managed to take your pain away...

She meets his questioning gaze and nodding of the head, with a shy smile. His eyes are gleaming mischievously as she lets out a small laugh, hitting him lightly on his chest with her right fist. The small hand flattens. Her thumb is grazing the bare skin at the v-neck of his kurta. He swallows thickly. His throbbing heart is threatening to burst forth from his ribcage, struggling to free itself from the dark chains he has strung around it. Desperate to place itself in the hand resting upon his torso.

She has closed her eyes once more, lulled by his steady breaths.

In and out. In and out.

He raises his left hand. It hovers above where she has her palm upon his chest. He moves to place it on top of hers...

RING...RING...RING...

Startled, she snaps open her eyes and jolts out of his half-embrace. He feels the absence of her warmth immediately. For a few seconds, he stares at the vacant space she had just occupied. As she had huddled into his chest, they had slotted together like two pieces of the same puzzle. He feels empty all of a sudden.

His daze is broken by her voice. She is standing a few feet away, talking on her phone. Without warning, a painful, red mist descends in front of his eyes. He jumps to his feet, both hands curled into tight fists at his sides.

In his mind, he is watching her in her bedroom. He had felt guilty, had come to apologise but had ultimately discovered the reality of their relationship. Every word she utters into the phone punctures his thoughts.

She was trying to sabotage his campaign.

She does not like him.

She does not love him.

The onslaught of these harsh words crash into his brain, repeating themselves over and over. He can almost taste the hard liquor he'd consumed that night to drown his senses, dull the pain. At this thought, he crashes back to the present.

He can hear her assuring her brother, promising to meet him immediately in the next street. She is ending the call, her back to him. He does not want to see her. Furrowing his brow, he abruptly turns around. Pauses.

It's okay. She's safe. Her brother is on his way.

He flinches at the fact that he has to reassure himself of her safety. Taking a deep breath, he slides the hard mask back onto his face and goes to take a step forward.

Her familiar warmth engulfs his right hand, his eyes drifting close at the contact. Determined to stay in control, he schools his features to convey annoyance. Lowering his eyebrows, twisting his mouth into a sharp grimace. There is a coldness flowing through the hard lines of his face. He opens his eyes. Ready.

Impatient, she tugs gently on his hand. He turns to face her, but she does not release him. She brings his hand, wrapped in her own small fingers, closer to her chest and holds it between them. He almost snatches his hand away, but as her thumb begins caressing his own, absentmindedly rubbing soothing circles over his skin, the harsh expression melts.

He lifts his gaze from their hands to her face. Her sparkling orbs are blazing at him, reflecting identical emotions in his own eyes.

They pour everything they feel but nothing they understand into their stare.

"Veera! Veera!"

She visibly sighs, tilts her head skywards and mutters an irritated Veerji'. Refocussing her eyes on the handsome young man in front of her, she leans forward slightly, whispering softly;

"Thank you..."

And before he can register what is happening, she places his hand back at his side, squeezes it fondly and heads towards her brother.

He shakes his head, trying desperately to clear the dreamy haze that surrounds his strong frame. He looks up and around, she has disappeared. Fear rises like bile in his throat, and he begins to run in the direction she walked off in. He rounds the corner of a house, and stops, clutching his chest.

In the distance, he can see her walking besides her brother. He watches them until they are out of sight before walking the familiar path to his own home. The fingers on his right hand stretch back and forth into a fist, trying to eradicate the tingling sensation. The aftermath of her sparking touch.

His Biji is sitting with a scowl, waiting for him. He isn't hungry anymore. With an irritated expression, he quickly brushes aside her stream of questions and worries over his digestive system.

As he begins to climb the stairs, her sorrowful cries echo in the depths of his mind.

He doesn't know how he'll sleep tonight.

Note: If it wasn't clear, they are sitting at the place where Baldev cures Veera's ankle pain.
