Chapter 15
The Mehel was still very fresh from sudden leave of Rani Sulkashana as was Ranaji who had under duress lost his love to his morals. This day was soon approaching that he had been aware of for some time but the extent of the pain It bought with it surprised him. A soldier, a King, the protector of his people and so broke inside from the absence of one lady. ?
How you deal with pain depends on the sort of human you are and for Ranaji he was going to force his wounds to heal. Even if that meant suppressing the thought of Sulkashana every time it crossed his mind and in an attempt to do that Ranaji went about the normality of his day determined not to let it change him but it wasn't going to be that easy.
The dismay on his expression was clear. He'd lost the sparkle in his eyes the smile on his face, the calmness in his way and as he marched out into the corridors to leave for a spot of horse riding his pace took a slightly inattentive Gayatri by surprise who was whisked away in a collide against Ranaji.
She wasn't really paying any attention and ended up in his arms which of course was embarrassing for the likes of Gayatri.
"Careful Raniji" he spoke in his royal tone of voice, their eyes met and even though Ranaji wasn't in the right frame of mind to be attentive Gayatri was. She could feel his hurt, see the unhappiness there was such a big void in him that he was trying so hard to fill and with that all was an serious undertone that she had never seen in him before and was cautious of.
The moment witnessed by Kuwar chachi who giggles at the open romance' Gayatri walks away as does Ranaji ignoring the on looker who knew nothing about the reality of the situation.
...
Time alone, time away yet still there was a lot the Kings mind which would only heal with time but there was another very powerful element Ranaji had never considered could do the job better - love maybe because he'd always been the one to love but to be loved' that he didn't know of.
He discarded his gloves, threw aside his riding crop, and threw his head back as he slouched into his armchair and took a sigh. Closing his eyes for a couple moments of rest he had become a man of habit even before realizing so.
He could feel one of his servants helping him out of his riding shoes and requested water.
Without even giving it a second though Ranaji took the glass of water from the tray he could see from the corner of his eyes whilst still sat in his chair.
"Coffee le aayey " - Bring me a coffee' he said after taking a shot of water but was taken by sheer surprise when he heard an unexpected voice.
"Kya le aaon ji.. ?" (What should I get you ?)
When turning his profile somewhat he saw Gayatri stood behind his chair and It became clear to him that the glass of water, that help out of his shoes was in fact Gayatri.
He observed her thoughtfully for a second before saying anything himself he had given her his word and allowance to take care of him so he spoke of nothing along those lines even if he would have liked to. She went on to explain how she didn't intend to disturb him it was just that she had seen there was no one around and thought to step in. She struggled to speak to him the way she would have liked to he noticed that. She was a little unsure around him, a little hesitant but not in the way Subharna ever was Gayatri was more innocent. She didn't seemed to know of how she stumbled with her words yet made her piece sound so bubbly and innocent at the same time, it was refreshing.
He listened to it all but answered very differently to what Gayatri had expected.
"Hamare saath chalyey.." - (Come with me..) he said as she watched him get up from his seat and wondered about the sudden abrupt nature of the kings response.
She followed him out of the room, down the corridors of the mehel and was surprised when they were stood at the kitchen.
He wanted coffee and there was no better way for Gayatri to understand what it is other than to make it herself and he would show her how. Because only he knew how he liked his coffee.
He stood just outside the royal kitchen and gave her small, simple polite but authoritative instructions on how to go about making his drink. She did exactly as he asked of her at each stage and when it was ready. She walked the distance to hand him the mug which he took his eyes read a very warm message that comforted Gayatri.
"Coffee, Thank you" he said as he nodded before excusing himself wordlessly. Gayatri rather surprised by Ranaji's approach which felt ever so personal she felt privileged that despite being the king her husband was kind and down to earth enough to not shun her lack of knowledge or simply sweep it under the carpet. He had a unique approach to things that was for sure.
Although for Gayatri it was a moment to cherish for the likes of Rajmata who had overseen it had another opinion all together.
Standing in that very corridor at an more discreet angle Rajmata appoints Yashodra to carry out an important responsibility.
...
Meanwhile elsewhere in the raj mehel there is a visitor Ranaji knows nothing about. British resident officer Mr Wilkinson wishes to see Ranaji however an adamant Rani Subharna aware of her husbands current frame of mind insists on the King being too busy and represents him taking an invitation addressed to Ranaji on his behalf.
...
Gayatri was in a world of her own after her first interaction with Ranaji and even though she tired to be more mature about it she couldn't it would take some time to get used to the fact that was married to her dream. She strolled along the corridors looking for Swarna to share the happening with when she was summoned by Rajmata.
Gayatri and Rajmata never had that much interaction, it was just the odd times Gayatri had no idea where she really stood with her motherinlaw. She hoped she would be a little like her mother who she missed incredibly but Rajmata was different royalty was seen in every aspect of her and her eye always beamed with a royal elegance it was hard to hell weather she looked down on her or it was just the way she was.
"Ham chahte hai ke yashodra aap ko mehel ke kuch tor tarike samjayey khaas kare Ranaji ki pasand na pasand." Yashodra is going to teach you some things about our ways in the raj mehel and in particular the Kings likes and dislikes.
Although this was very much unexpected it was a blessing in disguise because this exactly what Gayatri needed to make her way into Ranajis heart and tend to his heartache.
Her eyes thanked Rajmata who soon left Gayatri with Yashodra Suhru kare? "Shall we begin" she said with a smile.
...
Ranaji was in his quarters stood with the coffee Gayatri had made him in view of an extensive map of Amerkot when he sensed Subharna at the entrance of his room.
Come in.. he invited her in even before she could sound her presence. How he knew it was her amazed her but he was the king after all being all intuitive was a trait of his.
"Mr Wilkinson ayey they Maharaj aap se milna tha lekin hamne mana kar di"
"Mr Wilkinson was here he asked to see you but I took the liberty of refusing."
He turned to look at her approving of her choice as ever she was excellent at acting in accordance to his wishes if there was something Subharna had from him over these years it was trust and responsibility. There relationship as king and queen was impeccable.
"What is it the British want now" he comments casually whilst turning back to his work plan.
Amantran hai shyaad, Angrezi mein likha hai toh.
("It's an invitation of some sort its in English so I ..")
Subharna couldn't read English yet over the years she had learned to interpret ones recital of it. Ranaji noticed that every time Subharnas inability in the language was bought up his queen became immensely conscious on the matter. she looked almost ashamed on the matter not that Ranaji ever commented on the matter but he was observant of it. Subharna soon excused herself whilst Ranaji opened the letter and saw that it was an invitation to the annual ball hosted by the British something Sulakshana would normally accompany him with.

Gayatri was becoming a familiar face to Ranaji now. She bought him coffee, she helped him with his attire when required, she was the one that bought ointment to him in the evenings, or his hankerchief in the morning she even sat in the place of the maid who massaged his feet as he lay to rest at night she looked after him in every shape or from that a wife would she just hoped that he would notice.
