Chapter 12
They talked politics, he took the majority of things under her advisement and even though Rana made all the decisions Rani Subharna was his reasoning, his strength his sanity check and she was loyal to him always regardless of their personal equation that never got In the way of their duty as King and Queen.
Rani Subharna could see that that Ranaji was distressed yet faced his duties even so, the sharpness in his tone and haste in his decisions all told the story of a troubled mind who wore thoughts on one lady. - Sulakashana.
By chance Rani Sulkashana walked into the room, like others she didn't ask for permission to enter the kings room, Ranaji's love exempted her from such rituals so when Sulakashana walked in initially Rani Subharna looked for an indication from king to be excused but he did no such thing. He continued with their conversation whilst Sulkashana blanked the two of them walking past them both to ravage Ranajis cupboard of Alcohol before leaving the room.
For a queen to behave such a way was frowned upon yet Ranaji had always wavered Sulkashana of traditional expectations out of love but this was rather embarrassing even for the likes of a prophetic King who's love behaved in such a way in front of the wife he had chosen her over.
"Unhe vakt dijyey maharaj." ("Give her time") Subharna spoke a moment after Sulakshana had left to which Rana took a glance of acknowledgement. Only he knew how hard it was too look Subharana in the eyes on matters such as this when he was guilty of putting her through the same.
As Rani Subharana excused herself Ranaji took the opportunity to say one thing he had been meaning to say ever since he had bought Gayatri home. "Raniji thank you for welcoming Gayatri" both of them sharing a sincere understanding of one and others predicaments.
With both women leaving Rana to his own thoughts, Yashodra brings another matter to his attention asking him whether he would be the one to collect Rani Gayatri tomorrow afternoon from her home.?
...
They sat amongst the grass in the sunshine looking out onto the lake close to Gayatris home after spending some time waiting for Ranaji who hadn't arrived when expected. After some time waiting Gayatri took Swarna on a tour of her village. All new and very exciting to Swarnlekha, she was princess after all she never really got see village life. Nor did she have a family like Gayatris who lived the elegant yet humble life. Swarna could see how fortunate Gayatri was even If she felt like she wasn't. To her it was nice to be out of the four golden walls of the palace she was accustomed to but it didn't go unnoticed to her that Gayatri seemed lost ever since they had left the palace. It certainly had to do with that little bit of conflict they had heard amongst the King and Rani Sulkashana before leaving but Swarna couldn't be sure. Gayatri didn't really seem her normal self after that at least somewhat distracted and gloomy. As Swarna turned to look at Gayatri sat beside her she saw her watching the water quietly unsure what to say for the predicament was one of kind. Swarna did what she did best and that was humor the situation.
"Ranaji ki yaad sata rahin hai??" (Are you missing Ranaji) She said with a cheeky smile..
Dhat..nahin toh. ("No") Gayatri shrugged off the allegation she wasn't going to tell her that she may not have been missing him but she was certainly thinking about him in fact the thought of him hadn't left her for a moment the whole day she had spent back home.
...
The girls lost total regard for time and it was certainly very late in the evening when they both returned to Gayatris mother pulled the most motherly expression at Gayatris carelessness purely because not only was the sun setting she and Swarnalekha had returned home like a pair of teenagers but her mothers concern was that Ranaji had been there for sometime now awaiting them.
"Rani ban gayi par batchpana nahin gaya!" ( A queen you may be but you're still as childish.) Giving her a deathly stare at Gayatri who had come back looking a little messy her saari tucked into her waist as per the cycle ride and a speckles of grass stuck to her saari which her mother brushed off whilst quietly informing them that Ranaji sat within the room and had been here for sometime now.
"Ranaji, behte hai andar .." ("Ranaji is sat inside") she warned both of them to be a little more sensible like a mother would making both Gayatri and Swarna take a look at each other.
...
Both of them walked further into the house to see Ranaji sat engrossed in a game of Chess with Gayatris father. It was quite heart warming to see the two most important men in her life bonding for Gayatri. Both equally as intent on the game, Ranaji the picture of royalty. The posture he held in the chair was masterful and his appearance as always perfect to that of a king. The white of shirt and tweed waistcoat seemed to be her husbands favorite choices if she had noticed so. On the other hand her father in his half moon glasses and wise eyes convinced he had the lead on this surrounded by his grandchildren and each of the men were being treated very royally each with a maid fanning as to cool the deep humidity.
"Namaste Bhai Sa." Swarna was the first one to make their presence known in the silence of what looked like an intense game.
Nodding his head with partial attention Ranaji speaks whilst he continues to think with his hand at his chin in thought. "Lakshyaraj bhi aayey hai.. I'm sure he will be happy to see you."
Something Swarna hadn't anticipated one bit, she couldn't say she was very happy with the news but obliged anyway leaving to find her husband with a rather distasteful expression.
Meanwhile Gayatri who is stood at a distance just watching the game of chess is caught by her mother who is walking out of the kitchen with a bowl of peas she intends to shred of the pods. A typical evening task but nudges her daughter on the way telling her she shouldn't just stand there. Her eyes pointing to the maid who was stood with a fan cooling the air over Ranaji.
Gayatris mothers pestering did have its benefits, Ranaji soon noticed that the lady stood behind him waving that fan was now his wife. A glance with the eyes was all it was but it was sufficient and it also meant that he would have to win this game soon to save his queen of arm ache. Gayatri went on to watch the game as she cooled the air over her husband like a dutiful wife her joy swaying from corner to corner every time one of the men made a clever move but soon enough Ranaji had announced his winning move.
"Lagta hai kisi ke aane se hamari kismat jaagayi hai Sethji." ("Looks like I have lady luck in my corner after all..") Her eyes were in owe of him as he smiled at her.
His use of words put a smile on faces but his implications were well understood Gayatri above all touched by the choice of his words for her. She couldn't explain what it meant to her nor would she ever be able to explain what it was not to labeled a bad omen but to be shown off with pride.
The room was quickly vacated with the announcement of food but before Gayatri could leave Rana caught hold of her wrist as she walked past his chair in and unexpected tug. It startled her a little but then as it was apparent that it was just now the two of them in the room it was less of a bother to her nerves.
"Aap ke ankon mein joh bechainee jalakh rahin hai uski vaje puch sakte?" (Can I ask you why your eyes seem troubled.) Not having yet turned to him Gayatri was surprised by how sharp her husband was. Did her trouble really on display that vividly she thought. Turning back not sure what to say per nature she wasn't going to lie. She looked at him a glance almost to see if it was really okay for her to speak her mind and when she saw that the man looking at her was asking with concern she stepped that little closer and took a perched herself on the floor beside the arm of the chair he was sat upon. Her hands now resting on the wooden arm of the chair she looked at him with those big honey comb eyes of her innocently a glance or two that could never really hold for much longer than that.
"Hame laga tha aap nahin ayeygi.." (I was beginning to think you wouldn't come..)
He could see the uncertainty in her as she spoke to him but admired her spirit, her innocence and simplicity to which she spoke her mind. It most probably knew her reasons but asking seemed appropriate.
"Koi khaas vaja..?" ( what makes you think that ?)
This was going to be the hardest part of it. What was she too tell him? Tell him that she believes he may have changed his mind now she was probably the reason for conflict with his other wife. Ranaji could almost read Gayatri like a book even if she didn't make it verbal he knew exactly what was going on in her mind but her choice of words surprised him.
"Aap hamse pyaar nahin karte" (because you don't love me..)
She couldn't look him in the eyes at this point and Ranaji not only understood why but was impressed by Gayatris courage to be so open about what she felt. It was difficult thing to speak of yet it was a conversation they were going to have sooner or later. The day Gayatri had married Rana she knew of the reality of their relationship. A one sided love yet it was something unspoken of till now, . Now that Gayatri felt though she was the reason for the rift between her husband and his love it was more necessary then ever.
He lifted her chin with his fingertips so their eyes would meet. "Toh kya hua ham phir bhi aap ke saamne bhete hai "(and? I am still sat in front of you aren't I?)
When he put it like that it was like he had within seconds taken away a weight off Gayatris heart. His practical response led her to think and also agree to his question he was indeed sat before her as her husband despite all the odds which was a statement in its self but there was one more thing that troubled her Rani sulkashana to which Rana responded as much conviction as to which he answered her previous worry. "Unke gunegaar ham hai aap nahin.." (I'm her culprit not you)
It was kind of him to convince her so but Gayatri had her own perspective on what it was to have a husband and didn't think twice before sharing her view.
"Ji..ham aur aap ek hein baat hui na.." ( ."ji.you and me we are one aren't we")
She diverted her eyes when she realized that for the first time ever she had questioned him on multiple levels when she was supposed to keep differences in opinion at a minimum as per her mothers teachings but of Gayatri was of course her fathers daughter but she had never thought she would be so forthright so soon.
Gayatri had surprised him yet again he was married to two other women but Gayatri was different her view on life was so uncorrupted so innocent. His eyes showed a blaze of gratification for his other wifes never really spoke that way. One was too distant to converse with him and the other never gave focus to their marriage on the most basic of levels.
Gayatri's mothers voice calling for her interrupted their moment at which Ranajis eyes told her she should probably see to that.
Rana watched Gayatri get up to leave the room leaving him with a lot to think about. The one thing life had taught him was that love wasn't necessarily everything people like Gayatri could come along and open doors his alleged love struggled with. Yet Gayatri was a girl who believed in love he could see that clearly and he wasn't going to stamp all over her aspirations by speaking about his own heartache.
...
Outside Seth Govinds home Kuwar Lakshyaraj was stood with the driver who was servicing the car before they could leave for the Mehel.
"Aap ne yaha anke ki takleef kyun ki.. Sarur Yey dekh ne aayey honge ke kahin hamne aap ki satchayi toh Ranaji ko nahin bata di.!." (Why bother to come here surely to see if I've exposed you to Ranaji yet!)
Aggravated by Swarnlekhas tone of voice Kuwar Lakshyaraj took an uncomfortably painful hold of her arm crushing her posture against the body of the car.
