Part 2: Please don't forget to comment and give feedback

Ranaji seethed in rage in the balcony as Gayatri turned the lights off to pretend to go to sleep.

"The same sucess that apparently allowed him to buy me a king."

"You come cheap, Ranaji."

"Shiny new toy."

"You sold yourself for money."

If he treated her like a mohra, she made sure she objectified him in the worst of ways. He could break something! The way she had spoken to him made his skin burn still.

In his righteous anger, he had done his mother's bidding without any thought. Now, as Indravardhan reflected on his actions, he saw the wrongs in his decision. Gayatri felt used like a pawn in his royal chess set. And rightly.

Her father had taken the only opportunity given to Sethji to get his daughter what she wanted - me.

A father could do no differently, he probably would have done the same if he had a daughter. He and his mother were to blame for this sauda and Gayatri saw through to that very fast.

Funny thing was that she took his romantic rejection much better than his accusations about the deal. Indravardhan could not imagine any other woman so readily or maturely respecting a man's feelings for another woman. If falling for him was a "childish dream" like she owned, she fell out of love with him with more maturity and grace than he strictly thought necessary on their suhaag raat. Indravardhan felt guilty that he regarded this whole bit with a sense of loss - mingled with disappointment.

That little chit of a woman would not have her father or herself berated in the least. How grandly she stood up to him, her king and husband. He could even admire her for it. In fact, he did, Indravardhan realized. She had more honor in her than he could claim right now.

Indravardhan's anger evaporated soon. It was difficult to be on a high horse when he was wrong, like his bride had said.

He fell into a fitful, exhausted sleep on the balcony divan thinking all these things.

Next morning...

When Ranaji woke with a start at the first peak of dawn, he found a piece of paper on his side table, a kangan was holding it down like a paperweight.

"Sulakshna's kangan," was all it said in a beautiful, feminine script. No acknowledgement of anger or apology accompanied it.

Indravardhan crumpled the paper, annoyed. She just wanted to give back all his gifts - one at a time. Fine.

You have no right to expect an apology, a tiny voice said in his head.

Ranaji came inside to find the room empty. He went for the bathroom and nearly had his nose busted by the opening door. He inclined back and came face-to-face with a dew-faced, owl-eyed woman.

Gayatri's eyes, clear as day, narrowed to hide her initial alarm: You look sleep deprived.

Ranaji blistered at the non-compliment: At least one of us does.

Gayatri did not miss a beat: Better you than me.

He gaped at her. That annoying girl had not lost an ounce of sleep over this whole nightmare of a fight.

Gayatri sauntered off. She wore a plain, dove-grey chiffon sari that illuminated the brown in her eyes like hazel drops. Like chocolate, Indravardhan corrected himself.

Ranaji: You are supposed to wear red today.

Gayatri, matter-of-factly: Yet I wore grey.

She went and put on some gold bangles in front of the dresser. He watched as she transformed herself regally with more gold, looking more queenly than his mother. He had to admit, the effect was breath-taking.

She was about to shashay out before Ranaji pulled her back by the arm. He took her back to the dresser and gently put some vermillion on her maang.

Ranaji, triumphantly: Red.

Gayatri glowered at him like a cute, marked bird.

Ranaji, smirking: Get in the habit of putting this on in the morning. You are a married woman now.

Gayatri's heart secretly skipped a beat at his touch. Did she just imagine a possessiveness? Why did his hand linger on her?

She walked away without a word. Indravardhan concealed his disappointment and went for his riding habit as she left.

Late morning...

When he came back from his ride, Indravardhan saw Gayatri distributing prasad to the palace's West guards. He cupped his hands for his share as they came closer.

Gayatri: Shower first.

His browned knitted in annoyance: I want it now.

Gayatri: You cannot touch arti things without a fresh start in the morning.

Ranaji's two guards suddenly busied themselves with some moss on the West walls. He knew very well that it was all for show because their ears were perked and they were grinning like fools at the moss.

Frustrated into silence, he walked away. As Indravardhan passed by Badi Rani Maa with a grunted pranam, she nodded. Gayatri followed a little further behind.

Badi Rani Maa to Gayatri: You cannot refuse your king when he asks you for something, aagese yaad rehe.

Gayatri's chin went up: But I can tell me husband how to properly do aarti.

Badi Rani Maa's eyebrows raised a whole inch, but she did not say anything further as the new rani stepped inside.

Later in the day...

Eyes weary from looking at accounts all day, Indravardhan slowly made his way to his rooms.

Gayatri was in the balcony humming something. As he drew closer, she seemed to sense his presence, because she stopped abruptly.

An awkward silence passed.

He was the first to break it: I thought I might take you around to your parents this evening.

Gayatri was not looking at him, but out the balcony: Why?

Ranaji, confused: I thought you might want to do your pag-phere like other brides. Come, get ready.

Gayatri: There is no need. Hum aapse koi umeed nehi rakhte.

Please comment, I want to know your thoughts about this piece.

I love it when a woman can give back as good as she gets and I totally love this Gayatri! No sloppy, cranky females for me. She's a perfect go-getter and now I'd like to see what Ranaji has to say. You write well - which is rare in the world of FFs and your images make it even more fun to read. Looking forward to more from you. :)
