Chapter 7
...
Gayatri had left his chambers with a lot more questions than answers but a reassurance that her husband the king was on her side and the answers were not far not far at all.
Far off in her world of thoughts Gayatri is abruptly pulled to aside whilst she walks the corridor just outside Rana's chamber. It was a swift transition and who ever had caught her arm had a very tender touch. Surprised but not scared it was only Swarnlekha.
Worried for her friend and sister in law Swarnlekha pulls Gayatri into her room discreetly.
Her concern was what only a loved one could have she looked Gayatri up and down to make sure she was okay. Frantic about what would have gone on in there although Swarna was partial to her bhai sa and that was no hidden matter yet she knew well of his temperament. Guilt could be heard in her tone of voice.
"Ranabhai sa ne datta..koi saza toh nahin.?"--- (did he scold you, he didn't punish you did he???) When failing to work out what had gone on Swarna apologized, her innocence as ever apparent. Hame maaf kardijyey Gayatri hamari vajese aap par insaam laga. (I'm sorry Gayatri you were falsely blamed because of me.)
The irony was that they were both stood talking to one another again.
"Une farak nahin padta swarnlekha.." (I don't think he is offended by that Swarnlekha)
Seeing a very unsure Gayatri before her Swarnlekha got the feeling that her bhabhi sa was in need of friend.
...
Swarna changed the subject because sometimes not talking about the concern was the best way to get someone to open up. They spent hours together in that room, Swarna told Gayatri some funny stories about her childhood and Gayatri spoke about hers. The conversation soon matured and got to the most important matter. Their relationship, if there was one person Gayatri could talk to in this Palace it was Swarna.
Gayatris upset was visible in the form of slow forming tears but little did she know that it wasn't just Swarna she was sharing her feelings with at a distance non other than Rana Indravarden Singh Deo stood listening. Gayatris eyes may not have not have but Swarnas eyes caught on the King stood at the door. She became instantly alert at Rana's presence her eyes at first frightened and restless yet she was soon reassured as Ranas expression his eyes insisted that she remain oblivious to him and she did.
He stood at a distance true to his nature, looking influential, royal, gentlemanly but soft and stubble enough to allow what was going on in the room. A husband interested in his wife's concern.
"Hamne hamesha unka pyaar dekha hai Swarna unki parva, woh daat te they bhi toh pal bhar ke liyey aur aaj jab woh inti sakti se pesh aarahe hai toh takleef bhi us hisaab se hogi na."
("I've always ever felt his love for me Swarna, his concern, even when he is angry it's only ever for a moment or two and now that he's being this tough .. it hurts.")
Whilst Swarna consoled her Gayatris every word was heard and felt by Rana. His eyes thanked Swarna for her cooperation before walking away.
...
As Gayatri walked the corridors of the mehel ..more towards to servant quarters to return for the night she heard a cry behind one of the doors. When entering the room Gayatri could see a shadow hiding behind the barrels of food.
As she walked closer her heart a little wary of the dark she was surprised to see that girl she had introduced herself to a day ago. It was Chanda.
Why on earth was she here, and crying for that matter. As soon as Chanda lay eyes on Gayatri she hugged her like her life depended on it.
Between her sobbing Gayatri could make out the words "Hame bahar nahin jaana rani ma." (Don't make me go out there please.. )
It was some time before Gayatri could calm the girl and admitted she was hiding so she would not have to carry out her maid duties. When asked why she was so scared why she was so upset Chanda had one name to mouth.
Kuwar sa"
Her scars, her fear, her tears now all began to make sense to Gayatri.
It was no other than Kuwar Chandravadan who was abusing his royal rights.
...
Rana Indravarden was sat in the company of alcohol something he rarely did, his thoughts revolved around his own actions. Maybe he was wrong to have assumed that Rani Gayatri would be able to carry out on his expectation.
Was he a bad husband, or a bad King or both!?
Finishing his drink in a shot Rana Indravarden took reign control of his thoughts quickly. He believed in himself and his wife only good was to come of this!
As soon as he slammed the glass onto the surface a knock at the door was sounded.
With permission a maid servant entered his chamber.
"Ham Rani Gayatri ka sandesh layey hai Hukum." (I have a message from the queen your highness.)
...
Kuwar sa was pleasantly surprised when he finally laid eyes on the maid servant he had his eyes on for days. All his attempts to sweet talk the girl had failed, he had resorted to force yet she still managed to hide from him. The lights in his chamber were dim and the alcohol had got to his head as he watched the girl enter his room with his evening drink, under the servant Saari he could hardly see but that figure he admired with his sleazy gaze
As he attempted to make a move by holding the girl by her arm her resistance he didn't tolerate but before he could have stooped any lower and abused her the reality of the situation was so much different. The room was lit up and under the gunghat was non other than Rani Gayatri who had caught Kuwars hand mid air before he could lay another finger on her and in the background in an armchair was Rana who's merciless stare overpowered Kuwar.
Gayatri had Ranas permission to deal with Kuwar yet knowing that her husband would be apt at punishing him Gayatri demanded that Kuwar confess all his sins before Rana after which he was thrown to the Kings mercy. Every sin including the extra tax on food was now confessed. Gayatri had provided the proof Rana had asked for. She proved her innocence as did she prove Kuwars guilt.
The couple shared a look of understanding, whilst Ranas eyes were proud Gayatris thanked Rana for his cooperation and his ways which now long last seemed to make sense. That look in his eyes told her that he was aware of all long before and his choices for her, his punishment for her was not merely a sentence for her bad behavior. He had made this choice for her because she was the queen and was as responsible to her people as much as he was as King. It was much, much more than just a punishment It was a right, a opportunity to bestow her power, to prove she was accurate and to correct her shortcomings all in one. It was indeed a punishment fit for Queen.
Before Rana would get a chance to be alone in a room with her Gayatri chose to leave amongst the ruckus of an angry King and his guards & by the time Rana had Kuwar removed from his sight and dealt with he turned to realize that Gayatri had left.
...
It was a new dawn and a new days as Rana Indravarden Singh Deo is hit by sun rays from the balcony of his chambers. Slowly adjusting his eyes to the sunlight the king stirs in his sleep and the more and more the realization of the morning kicks in the sound of Morning aarti is audible to him.
That voice he couldn't mistake. The first word on his lips was Gayatri' as he looked at the empty bedside next to him and recalled the night before the last he had seen of her but purpose was now fulfilled and with that thought and the sound of his wife's harmonious morning prayer Rana rose from bed adamant to lay eyes on his Gayatri.
Appropriately dressed for the occasion in white traditional wear Rana cares not for the notorious morning chill and strides out on the palace grounds with a renewed passion and joy. It was time to seal the chapter and start fresh but as he gets to the mandir he is surprised to see that Gayatri isn't present. Sat by the alter is the morning aarti and with it a letter addressed to him in handwriting belonging to his wife.
His eye sight saw no signs of Gayatri instead a familiar looking young girl, a maid servant with vivid green eyes Is stood with her eyes to the ground after a formal greeting.
"Rani ma ne aap ke liyey bheja hai hukum" The girl was holding out a shawl for the king that had Gayatri written all over It. She didn't have to be infront him to care for him. Taking it Ranas wraps himself in swift movement after which his eyes fall on the letter addressed to him.
Picking it up the letter Rana written in a blue ink in untainted Hindi script rana reads its contents. Addressed inside to
"Ranaji"
"Aasha hai ke Aap ki umeedo par khare utre honge, aur yey bhi aasha rakhte hai ke saza ke pure hone par aap apni Gayatri ka swagat karenge. Tab tak ham Chanda ko aap ke sharan mein rakh rahe hai uski hifasat kijyeyga."
I hope I have been able to live up to your expectations and I also hope that you will welcome me back with open arms when on the completion of my sentence until then I leave Chanda in your care.
The girl was Chanda Rana looked up from the letter he was only part way through reading but the girl stood before him needed no explanation . She almost completed Gayatris letter without words. She was the girl with scars both visible and invisible, stood staring at the floor in a very unsure state. Rana had just come to face with his failure as a king but within he vowed that no other would go through what this girl had suffered.
As he approached her a little the girl seemed to look increasingly nervous and who wouldn't be if approached by the king but Rana was no other king. He was nothing to be afraid of he observed her silently for a moment but his one move placing the palm of hand over the girls head as a gesture of care reassured as well as comforted her.Originally posted by: steffi_angel
