Kalpana stood next to Raghav; he asked her if she was fine and she assured him regarding that. The party was going on smoothly, however Nitali had grown conscious about her sister and was keeping an eye on her. She didn't want her sister to take any decision in haste. Kalpana noticed her parents again. This time Raghav's parents were talking to them. She was trying her level best to keep the emotions under bay.
Stealing the moment from everyone and taking benefit of standing alone with Kalpana, Raghav warmly held her hand. She came out of her trance and looked at him who was already looking at her with mixed emotions that said how much he was looking forward to this relationship. She blushed and lowered her eyes. His affection was making it difficult for her to decide what she exactly wants to do with this relationship! Does she embrace it with open heart or look at all the aspects and then takes a practical decision which is beneficial for the both of them?
Party was nearing its end when Nitali went to Vishesh. "The party is going to end in few minutes, Vishesh please help Kalpana in dealing with this situation maturely. I really don't want her to lose out on such a good relation because of any sort of stupidity that she may attempt as soon as she reaches home. Listen she really respect you a lot, try to explain her to see at the brighter side. Please." "Nitali you don't have to say please to me for lil cute. I'll do something." She went away after being assured that he will handle the situation. As soon as she left he received a message on his phone which left him puzzled but he couldn't do much about it.
"Chaliye ab hame bhi nikalna chaiye" Dinesh told Raghav's family. They reached their car when Vishesh requested Raghav's father to take him out for a Kulfi party. "Kulfi!!! But..." Before he could complete the sentence Vishesh interrupted in between and urged him to allow them as he owes a treat to Kalpana and he will be glad if Raghav comes along as he is a part of the family now." Kalpana was confused with this sudden turn of events but couldn't say a word as her sister held her hand tightly signalling her to stay mum. The elders were confused as well but then Vishesh is Kalpana's brother in law and they didn't have much say in this so they agreed. Soon they all left.
There was an air of confusion in both the families but none of them said a word. There was minimal talking during the drive where Nitali appreciated the arrangements of party to ease the tensed atmosphere. Raghav grew a bit nervous but was ready to handle the situation. He subconsciously knew Kalpana was not happy with the party decision. They all reached at the outskirts of the city where there was a closed dhabha. Raghav and Kalpana sat across each other. They were occasionally looking at each other with eyes that had so many questions which needed to be answered today. "Raghav and Kalpana, you guys need to talk." Vishesh started. "See you both know something is not right; I won't say its wrong but it is not right and that has to be set straight." They both looked at him. "See there is nobody here, so talk and sort out everything so that you have more clear vision towards your future." Having said so he left the two alone and stood near their car besides Nitali. "Do you think this is right?" Nitali asked all perplexed. "It will." "But what if things turn worse?" "It couldn't get worse than this." She looked at him. "Look Kalpana is not a kid nor is she someone who will easily put her foot down. She has always been like this. She has already made her mind for this relation. What more bad can happen now? Tell me?" She sighed looking at things falling apart before her. "At least we score a chance here that may be Raghav can show her what potential this relation has which she is unable to see due to so much confusion." He draped his arms around her shoulder and looked at them.
No words were exchanged. They both were thinking on the same lines, from where to start? After mustering all the courage Kalpana broke the silence and spoke to him with lowered eyes "Raghav I think we should end this here itself. May be I am not the right one for you. May be we took this decision in haste and in future we will repent over this. I don't want both of us to suffer. It's better we call off the engagement." After a few seconds she looked at Raghav, his face was not hard, it was not even shocked or sad. He was just looking at her, trying to read her, trying to decipher the hidden meaning behind those words.
He stood up from his place and walked towards her. Nitali and Vishesh got alert. They were just looking at him mirroring the expressions of Kalpana. Raghav sat beside her. After taking deep breaths and mentally choosing right set of words he started, "May I ask you the reasons behind such bold step?" He looked at her with questioning eyes which Kalpana couldn't take for long and lowered her eyes again. "May I? Or you feel that you have right to take decision on my behalf also." She didn't say anything. "Do you remember Kalpana when I had come to see you, you told me to give reason in case I say no to the proposal? Now I want to know the reason Kalpana." This time his voice was a bit hard. Nitali held Vishesh's hand tightly. She was getting scared of the outcome.
She stood up from there and went a little far from him. After gathering all the strength she looked at him and replied "I'll give you all the reasons for this." She huffed and after taking a long deep breath she continued "There are some major differences between us." "Like" there was an immediate response from his side. He anxiously and desperately wanted to know that very strong reason which led her to take this step. "Raghav there is a huge financial difference between our families. My lifestyle doesn't match up anywhere with yours. I mean..." she paused for a while and looked at him who was looking at her intently. "I cannot think of spending lakhs on a party." She again looked at him; there was no expression on his face which could give her a hint about what he was thinking. "Raghav you have studied from abroad whereas I have not, you deserve someone who matches up with all the criteria's. I am certainly not the one." She looked down and was almost on the verge of crying.
"That's it or something more is left to be said." His voice was cool. He somewhat knew how Kalpana is. She gets nervous in tricky situation. "Raghav I have said what I wanted to." "Hmmm I heard that and now it's time for you to listen." She became a little alarmed on listening to his firm voice. He wasn't broken nor his voice sounded like one. "Tell me Kalpana, didn't you read the bio-data?" She nodded in affirmative. "It was mentioned there that I have done my masters from abroad. Wasn't it?" She remained mum and he continued. "When our families met each other for this proposal, didn't they already have the idea of each other's financial status?" Again, there was no response from her side. "They did!" Vishesh and Nitali looked at each other. They felt a bit relieved seeing Raghav taking the things so patiently.
"Kalpana our families had taken all the care before going ahead with this proposal. It was not sudden, we were well aware of these facts. Why are you fretting out now? These are all petty issues; don't make them the base to call off the engagement." "Raghav I agree we knew all these things but I didn't know what kind of lifestyle you and your family lead? I mean I cannot even think of throwing off lakhs for a party. That's way out of my dreams. I won't be able to cope up with such kind of lifestyle. I won't be able to match up with the expectations you people are carrying for me. Your office people too think that I am not the right choice for you." Raghav got a bit irritated but knew now is not the time to loose cool. She is already having kind of anxiety attack and if he looses his cool things will slip from his hands which he did not want at any cost.
He went near to her. He held her shoulders and made her look towards him. He gently squeezed her shoulders and tried to explain her again. "Kalpana do you remember the first time when I came to see you. We were alone when you brought tea for me. You were so much nervous that you almost spilled the tea on me when I held your hands to manage the situation. At that very moment my heart skipped a beat. I have never seen a girl with so much innocence and simplicity together. It's a rare combination and perhaps the most beautiful one. When you stopped in the midway and asked me to give a reason for rejection, I had none because I never thought of rejecting you the time I saw you descending the staircase. When you tripped and I held you, you asked if I had said something. Yes. It was a yes from my heart for you. Kalpana this relation means the world to me. I have rejected many girls because I truly believed be it arrange or love marriage, the heart should say yes and in my case it never said yes to those whom I have met before meeting you and when I met you my search ended." Kalpana was almost lost in his words. She knew it was coming straight from his heart. "Please Kalpana don't give in to the opinions of others, especially those who are not at all related to us anywhere."
"Raghav I completely understand what you are saying, but what if in future you start believing in those opinions and feel that you took a wrong decision. I don't want us to go through that pain. I don't." His hands slipped from her shoulders. He couldn't believe that even after so much convincing she still believes in the words of that few random people. He had a defeated look; he stared at Kalpana helplessly knowing nothing is left from his side that can convince her. He lowered his head and accepted his defeat. Nitali shook her head in defeat while Vishesh saw a beautiful relation dying before him.
"I have never thought you were so matured Raghav!" All of them turned to see the owner of the voice. Standing there was Harivansh Singhania, the man who arranged this beautiful Jodi. "Dadu!" Surprised, shocked, confused; words fell short to describe their expression. He was standing there along with Keshav, Radhika and Kavya. There was a brief silence. All four of them were looking at the other four who made a surprise entry according to them. "Wh...Wh...When did you all come?" Raghav asked stammering due to fear. What if they have heard everything? It's true that tomorrow it would have been out in the open for everyone but atleast it wouldn't have come out in this manner. "We came when you both have started the conversation. We were standing right here but you guys were so much engrossed in the conversation that our presence up till now went unnoticed" Keshav answered. Raghav took a step back, his fears come true. Kalpana stood rooted to her place in shock while Vishesh and Nitali lowered their heads.
"Vishesh I had messaged you to take Raghav and Kalpana outside. That's why I guess you have brought them here and that is why I allowed Raghav to come with you for the supposedly treat of matka kulfi which was already there in the party." Vishesh closed his eyes for his lame excuse but opened it immediately on realising that it was his number. "Dadu it was your number." "It is still very much my number. I guess you were so much occupied with other thoughts that you did get a tad bit confused but didn't pay much attention to it. Anyways at the end I guess mine and yours plan coincided which was indeed a good thing." "Dadu you were following us?" "Otherwise how could we have reached here." There was again silence but this time it didn't last long. "Come, my children let's sit. Kalpana and Raghav you both will sit with me." Following his instruction all sat down the way he told. Much to everybody's surprise the atmosphere was not filled with tension anymore. They could easily feel the cool breeze now.
"So Kalpana I heard your reasons. They were justifiable but not so much that you break the relation on that basis." "Dadu..." "I am not finished yet and I would like you both to gimme a fair chance to put forth my point of view." Kalpana understood his words and apologised. "So as I was saying that I found your reasons justifiable but not worthy enough to call off the engagement. Kalpana you know why did I choose you?" He looked at her for a response but there came none. "You feel obligated towards the society. You believe in contributing to the society for what it has given to you. It's such a noble deed. It is the attribute of a responsible and matured person. When I saw all these things I asked the manager about you and your family. I have known your family professionally from many years and had a fair amount of idea about your family on personal front but not much. Hence I took all the reasonable care that I can while going ahead with this proposal not only because I didn't know you all but also I knew my grandson very well. He has put me in awkward situations many a times before. This time I wanted to seal his fate with you. After getting to know about you and your family one thing was certain, Raghav will have to come up with a very strong reason for denying this proposal." She stole a glance at him while he was looking at particularly nothing.
"You know Kalpana, when I left my native to make a fortune in this city, I was judged by many. All of the people back there had an opinion about me. Trust me they were not good ones. Someone said I am the black sheep of the house who would loot off all the money my father has earned, someone said I'll get lost in this big city, some said I'll return from the very next train. You know who supported me, my parents and my wife. They had struggled with me a lot. She used to handle kids and used to do all the household chores while I used to walk as much as I can to save money and raise kids as well as fulfill some of her wishes which I can afford in that earning. Our struggle paid off and slowly and gradually my business started flourishing. I bought a home in this very city within three years. After establishing myself a little more I brought my parents here. But the opinions of those people didn't end there. When I established myself they had other opinions for me and that too wasn't in good terms." Everybody looked at him intently trying to decipher his words.
"People offer opinions no matter what you do, where you go, what you achieve. Trust me if you call off this engagement and think that people will stop making opinions about you or they will stop judging you then you are grossly mistaken. They won't! People are opinionated about everything. Every little single thing that you could find in this society and you ask opinion about it, they will have even if they don't have the requisite knowledge for it. It is more of like an entertainment to them. Giving opinions on things that are remotely and in many cases not even related to them. Don't look at the world or at this relationship from their eyes. You will miss out on many good things. They will say what they want to no matter how much you prepare yourself for anything. As regards to this party, well consider it as a warm up session that players go through before entering into the main field. You haven't done well but that doesn't mean you won't do well ahead."
"But Dadu...I mean you are not getting what I am actually thinking. May be I am unable to express myself. May be..." "You don't have to." She looked at him, the confidence in his eyes showed he understood what exactly she was pointing at. "This is not the first marriage happening before my eyes. I have seen many and I have been a mediator in many. I have got my kids, their parents, married." He looked at Keshav and Kavya. "You don't have to tell me everything; I understood your unspoken words." She sighed and looked at him for guidance. "Don't judge people or relations. You are no one to do that. Form opinions about people and relations who are near and dear to you but on your own experiences with them. People haven't had anything with you nor they will ever had, so stop worrying about what they say and start TRUSTING those few people whose opinion really matter to you, who really cares about you and who you know will stand by your side in adversity. Everything will fall into the right place then.
She pondered his words. Weren't they true? She has been judged many a times even before this marriage issue and she will be judged lifelong for something or the other. Nobody can stop people from offering their opinions. And wasn't she doing the same thing with Raghav and herself. She too judged and formed an opinion for this relation even before settling down well. She barely knows Raghav and instead of knowing him and his family she made an opinion that she cannot do well there. She underrated herself because she started looking herself from those random people's opinions.
"Kalpana take your own time but when you make a firm decision back it up with a solid reason, one which has your own views for this relation and not what others think about it. Again if you have any doubts which are not letting you to come to a conclusion, tell me I am there for you." Saying so he stood up to leave alongwith rest others. Raghav gave one final look to Kalpana before retreating and followed his grandfather. "Chale" Vishesh asked Kalpana. Raghav and his family members reached towards the car but stopped after hearing what everybody wanted to hear since the moment this conversation started. "I have no reason to back out from this relation. Whatever ambiguity was there, you have cleared it all Dadu." She walked towards him though her eyes were on Raghav who just heaved a sigh of relief after hearing those words. "Every relation demands some adjustment, a bit of compromise and lot of patience and now I am ready to give it all and work on this relation sincerely. I am no more afraid of what people will say because those who matter to me are already standing by my side." She hugged Raghav and apologised for her behaviour. A smile adorned everybody's face looking at the couple who shed tears of joy while still hugging each other.
Dadu cupped her face and kissed her forehead. "You are very brave, not every girl shows the courage that you have shown. Instead of carrying your doubts and moving on this relationship, you shared it with your partner. Not many people share their fears because they are afraid that people will think otherwise." She smiled and he reciprocated. "Raghav, today I am extremely proud of you. Today I saw of bit of my glimpse in you. They way you handled the situation and tried not to loose patience are commendable. You have grown up and grown up so well." He kissed his forehead too. "I am happy that I made you proud and also that everything ended on a good note which few hours before seemed a distant dream to me." "Let's end the night, tomorrow will be a fresh start with more vigour and strong faith." They headed towards their respective cars and drove for their home.
Well I believe I have said whatever I wanted to in the update itself so the gist isn't required. The next update will be the last one for this SS. Since there was no prologue there won't be epilogue as well. Please give me your feedback via comments as this is one of those updates where I have invested maximum time to make it look appropriate from all the angles and I genuinely want to know whether you guys found it reasonable or not.
Thanks & Enjoy Reading 😊
