Chapter 2-A

Around the Mumbai City

As Raghav, Sammy, Prem settled down in the car, such that Prem was seated next to driver seat while Raghav and Sammy placed themselves in back seat. Raghav took out his laptop and loosened his tie. Kalpana reached her driver seat.

"9.30 is meeting in Oberoi Convention Centre, right across Mumbai Central Station. I hate being late," Raghav announced and Kalpana rolled her eyes. Raghav added, "Mr. Kapoor can you please translate the same to this Desi Woman on driver seat." Prem nodded and looked at Kalpana who was now giving the look, "Don't you dare utter a word." Making Prem quiet. "Sir, Yeh Ghadi hai na, Dijaal par chalti hai, and Samanya logo ki Samanya Taxi hai, ab isse hawaai jaaj bana ke mein udaa toh nai sakti, haala ki aapka khud ka hawai Jahaaj tak deri se Pahuncha..." Raghav was pissed off with whatever he did understand from kalpana's taunt. "Well, fault tumhare India ke air traffic ka hai not mine, for not letting my plane land on time and it had just hover around in air for like 1 hour." Kalpana gritted her teeth, "For everything this dude needs to blame India, as if his USA, works only on time, I seriously pity it." Kalpana just added, "Toh ab aap road trapphic dekh le, I not break koi trapphic niyam," she said while plugging her seat belt and starting the car. (Now that you have experenced air traffic, enjoy road traffic, I won't be breaking any traffic rule ...)

Speed of car was appropriate. It wasn't too slow, like Raghav had actually imagined. They did reach destiny of his hotel within 30 minutes, where Prem guided them to their rooms and Raghav and Sammy got refreshed and ready for their meeting, why Kalpana had decided to have some road side tea from stall. All of them again settled in the car in same places within less than 15 minutes. It was 9.00 by now and they had to reach the centre as soon as possible. Kalpana was focused on driving, meanwhile her cell phone rang and Kalpana took the car in side. Raghav glared at her, "I hope tumhe pata hai, we have less time to waste, continue driving." Sammy added, "Kalpana humein late-- I mean deri ho rahi hai, tum driving jaari rakho." Kalpana looked at him through mirror, "Maaf Kijiye Sahab, OoO Aai ka phone hai, shayad kaam hoga, aur phone pe baatein karte karte drive karna khatarnak hai." (Sorry, but I need totalk to my mom's call, must be something urgent. It is dangerous to talk and drive.) Raghav looks at Sammy and asks "What is I?" Sammy explains, "Raghav, that's AAI, meaning mother." Raghav looked at him with confusion, "I thought Mother is called Maa, Maaji, or Mom in Hindi." Sammy chuckles seeing Raghav's condition, "Well Aai is Marathi term." Raghav was stunned, "Oh Lord, so I do not have only bear Hindi speaking driver but she will have her Maraati words too." Sammy laughed, "Yes, Hindi with broken English and Marathi Tadka." Raghav looked at Kalpana, "Ab can you cut the call, we have to leave," Kalpana ended the call saying, "Aushadi Ujyaat Kappat aahe." (Medicines are in right cupboard.)

Kalpana smiled, "Fikar not Sir, I not drive ghadi, I udaavo Ghadi." (I do not drive the car, I fly it." Raghav looked at her in utter irritation. Taxi reached the centre by sharp 9.25, crossing all traffic and with good speed. "Yeh, Lo aa gaye, taka tak Nau Pachish ko." (Look, we are here, perfectly at 9.25). Raghav couldn't help being impress by these small things, yet he cannot be 100% happy by the fact, she couldn't speak and communicate directly through and he had tolerate her typical desi accent, and which was major hurdle for him to accept any skills she possessed.

Raghav nods his head, and asks Sammy to inform concerned person about his arrival and to keep things ready, "Mr. Desai, this is Samarth Raizada, assistant of Singhaniya and Head of all American Branches. We have reached the centre, but are surprised to see no one around to guide us. Hope everything is ready for meeting." ... After few seconds from Sammy, "What!" Came the loud sound. "But shouldn't you have informed us or should have made some arrangements before. We have specially come here for this meeting and landed in this country two days before our actual work site. How could you be so irresponsible." Raghav stood there shocked. By this time, he had guessed some huge gaffe about meeting not being held or plan modified. He was already angry with Kalpana's behaviour and to add on if Mr. Desai has created any scene, he would be ready to just shoot the next person to come his way. Sammy cuts the call, "Raghav... the thing is..." he paused, while Raghav looked at him, "go on... now..."

Sammy: "The thing is that Mr. Desai's wife has been admitted in hospital, and he had no other option but to go rush to hospital at 6 in morning, hence couldn't..."

Raghav cuts him: "Hence couldn't even have courtesy to inform through message about meeting being called off, right?"

Sammy looks down. He bangs his hand on roof of taxi, and Kalpana felt "Oouch.." seeing his action. Raghav continues in anger, "See these are Indians, for whom personal life and family and all these idiotic things comes much before professionalism. I really wasn't interested in this meeting, but it was just because his consistent perseverance to look at project for once made me decide to give him chance and come early for the project and it's discussion. But now just because his wife is hospitalized, he decides to take things for granted."

Raghav told Sammy to call back on the number, as he personally wished to speak to him. Sammy did the same. Raghav answered the call, "So Mr. Desai, finally you chose your path after begging to us for about 4 years about the project. Finally when you had the opportunity you chose to turn away." ... He waited for reply. "Wife? C'mon don't tell me there was no one else to take her to hospital and be by her side. I hate such crappy answers mind it! If this meeting was at all important to you could have just bothered to inform us, but you didn't. First this strange country, so called my mother land, and, weirdest of people, emotional fools, and relatives oriented. I bet, even if you had some far away relative, you would have ran away under excuse, right?" Not wishing to hear any further Raghav cuts the call.

Kalpana was now really angry listening to his words about relationships and importance also about India and Indians. Afterall even she, who has completed her engineering, well almost, till results are declared, of which again she is sure be topper and would have no KT, but point is, she inspite of being so capable, is working as driver! Why? For her father, for this special relation she shares with him, and for what he has done for her from her childhood till now. No one has right to treat any relations like crap and hell, specially at cost of profession. NO One! But somewhere she does agrees it was on part of Mr. Desai to inform him much earlier. If he has been in hospital since early morning, he could have had some responsibility to inform Prem or Raghav/Sammy sir atleast half n hour before. Kalpana looked Raghav and Sammy, and continued her thoughts, "These two must have been so tired after long journey, they could have gotten proper rest, had they know about meeting being cancelled. Maybe he is busy and it sliped out of his mind. Afterall she is HIS WIFE! But what about other members of the office, where they sleeping to let this matter be ignored?"

Kalpana really felt bad. Moreover, such things leads to let down about India and Indians in minds of people like Raghav. She decided to lighten up the mood by making few suggestions, Like Mumbai tour. Afterall they had two days in hand to waste now. But as of now, she needs to show them that she hasn't understood a bit of it. She looked at disappointed Prem and went near him, "Ab Tujhe Kya hua?" she said. Prem looked at Kalpana, "Yeh meeting ..." Kalpana cut him so she can carry on the conversation, "Kya hua aaj ke iss meeting ka? Kahin... woh.." she stopped for a moment to think of proper Hindi term for word "Cancel", but failed to know, infact... she was wondering some proper hindi word for meeting as well, but couldn't just get them. Sammy continued Kalpana's sentence, "Kalpana woh, aaj ki jo meeting thi who raddh kar di, kyunki ..." Raghav glared angrily at Sammy, making him stop the sentence, "There is no need to explain all details to everyone," he said looking at Kalpana. But Kalpana was on different dimension of shock to hear Sammy say, Meeting Raddh kar di" ...that NRI like Sammy could identify word for cancel as "Raddh" and she being Mumbaikar couldn't. . In the meantime, somewhere from railway station across the road, there was an announcement heard, "Kripya Dhyan de, Aaj Nau Bajkar Paitalis minute ki Dadar Jaanewali train Raddh kar di gai," (Dear passengers, train to Dadar leaving at 9.45 has been cancelled). She looked right at station and thought "Shame on Me!" I have travelled by Mumbai Local Trains for almost 6 years and still I couldn't recollect the word, after hearing it n number of times during the these years. But seeing crowd on the platform, she did get one brilliant idea to torture new NRIs around, "I will for sure make them take one trip from Churchgate to Virar by Local Train, bas, I need to think how will I do it," she thought.

But as of now, her focus was to spread some cheers around, and make some new suggestion to let new comers know their own country bit more. She went to Prem, "What yaar Prem, Ek meeting can... raddh hone ka itna ghum." Prem was now in no mood to listen ahead as he was the one to give appointment to Mr. Desai, and he too had his own benefits from the project. Kalpana started tickling Prem making him dance funnily and run away, while Kalpana ran behind him. This scene indeed brought some light smile on face of Sammy and also helped Raghav divert his attention on two people laughing away. He looked at Sammy and said, "We should go to hotel, and start preparing for Palghar-Alibaugh project. We are planning something different for these places, and we need to see construction site as well." Prem was finally relaxed and both returned to Raghav and Sammy, Kalpana looked at them, "Chalo, ab hum Mumbai Darshan karenge, apni hi toh car hai, ghumte hai aur maze karte hai, what say Prem?" (Let's go for Mumbai Tour in car). Prem looked at Kalpana and then at Sammy and Raghav, "Ummm, sir why don't we explore the city a bit. We can just go around in the car and see wonderful places." Raghav snapped, "What's Wonderful' in this place I mean..." Kalpana cuts him, "Tum Ko Kuch nai Pata, chup raho! Bohot wonders hai yahan par bhi, ab lagii shart, by kal sham you will Prem the city." (You shup you don't know anything, there are wonderful things around in the city too.) Raghav looked at Prem for some help, Prem offers, "She meant you will LOVE the city." Kalpana is cracking up inwardly pitying Raghav. Raghav smirks, "Really your city, let's see then." Kalpana glowed up with smile, "Hai Na, Chalo...! Idhar naa Dariya hai, Samudhra Tat toh bohot hai, Khaan Paan ke liye bade bade ..." Kalpi paused,,... Kalpi think fast... Hindi word for restaurant... Grrr.. chuck, "Khaan Paan ke liye Raastouraant hai, aur Maal who bhi humare sher bade bade bandhe hai." Raghav screamed, "Chup...!!!!!" Kalpana shuts up and listens, "We are really exhausted for now! Can you drop us back please? That would be biggest favour." Sammy steps in to say, "Kalpana is right Raghav, let's know city and these places better so we do eliminate cultural issues from projects as well and get to know how can our project be successful and useful by residents and civilians." Raghav looks at Sammy, "Fine, but in evening." Kalpana smiles. "Ok, Fikarr Not Sahab." All settle back in car and drive off to hotel for their rest time, while Kalpana too gets the break to go through her books of entrance exams in free time. She had decided to carry her laptop and books for work, just for such break periods and her time is saved. Kalpana knows she is a woman, typical one, who has so much of work at home, being at home, she would never let her mother do cooking, she has to take care of her father, and also make sure, her brother in USA is able to connect to family on times. It won't be easy for her clear entrance if she didn't utilize her time wisely. Yet another challenge for her stands to study in a way that, her Sirs never know about her Angreji Kitabe, (English books) and laptop works.
