Chapter 14
Ragav watches Kalpi ignore him... Turning away from him as she tucks herself in bed. He stares at her brack... Broodingly... Then turns and stares at the ceiling... Then back at her.
Kalpi turns towards him... Takes his hand in hers and says, "goodnight." Surprised by her gesture, Ragav strokes her palm with him thumb... Caressing her... His gaze filled with love and passion... He says, "I am not tired." She stares at him... Passionately... And says, "neither am I." He leans towards her... Kissing her...
He cuddles her afterwards and says with a smile, "I am glad you are no longer upset with me." Kalpi gives him a peck on his lips and says, "Aai says that a couples bedroom is their haven... Arguements.. Misunderstanding... Anger... Should not be brought in... They should be left at the door. So tomorrow when I leave this room... I shall still want an explanation... And Ragav, I am not upset... Just confused."
Running his hand through his hair, Ragav stares at the ceiling, taking a deep breath. He says softly, "I know about..." Stops for he does not know how to continue. He turns to face her. Holding her hand in his, he says, "I know that the child is not Pakhi's and mine." Kalpi looks at him comically as she tries to understand what he just said... Surprised, she says, "not yours and Pakhi's? Then whose?" Thinking it as some kind of joke she does not wait for him to respond, instead chuckles and says, "Acha!" then adds seriously, "ragav not funny. How can you say it is not yours and Pakhi's?"
Annoyed with her lies, he lets go of her hand and says in a harsh voice, "stop lying kalpi. There is no way you are carrying Pakhi and my child. Just admit the truth." Hurt over his harshness, Kalpi sits up and says, "what the hell do you mean. If it is not yours and Pakhi's child then whose is it? How can you even be so sure that it is not?"
Ragav says bitingly, "I am sure because Pakhi can never become a mother. She suffers from a medical condition where... She can not become a mother." Confused, not able to understand, Kalpi replies, "I know this. Which is why I am her surrogate!" Shaking his head, Ragav says, "you are not her surrogate. Her eggs can never become a zygot." Stunned as understanding dawns on her, she replies, "then whose child am I carrying. Oh my God! The doctor made a mistake."
Annoyed, thinking that she is lying to avoid the truth, he yells, "oh for God sake. Cut the crap. The doctor made a mistake. Are you even hearing yourself? Just admit it... You got pregnant... Decided to hide the truth throught the surrogacy never expecting to get caught."
Crying as emotions run awry, Kalpi says, "Ragav I promise this is not true. I was not pregnant. I would not lie to you. I have never slept with anyone, but you." Ending him to believe her, Kalpi says, "ask your mum. She was there. She knows everything."
Ragav gets up and storms to his mother's room... Not caring the time... Yelling, "mum wake up." Kalpi rushes behind him. Neetu wakes up to find Ragav staring at her with anger and Kalpi behind him crying silently. Alarmed, she says, "Ragav, Kalpi, what has happened?" Ignoring her question, Ragav asks, "whose child is she carrying?" Confused because not so recently he had told her he knew the truth, neetu looks at him, trying to understand what was going on. Avoiding Kalpi's gaze she says softly, "you already know the answer to this question, Ragav." Nodding, he replies, "I do. I want to hear it again."
She looks to Kalpi apologetically, turns back to Ragav and says in a strong voice, "yours and Kalpi's."
