Chapter 6
One week later
Ragav walks into his office, pleasantly surprised when he sees his siblings and maya. Chuckling he says, "looks like somebody forgot their way." Sitting on his chair, he asks, confused, "what's up! Why do you all look so anxious?"
Clearing her throat, maya replies, "Kalpi handed in her resignation today. She looked very distressed." Ragav frowns and says, "how can this be? We spoke last night and she never mentioned anything," his heart racing with worry he continues, "I know she is worried about how to convince our fathers to accept our relationship... I too am stumped on what to do next. Kalpi does not want me to do anything to upset my father. I am at a loss."
Ragav stands up and starts pacing to and fro while the others sit sently, watching him, he turns towards them, asking, "why did she not tell me? What else is she hiding?"
Gulping, Pakhi looks away guiltily. Ragav noticing this frowns and says softly, "Pakhi." Hesitantly she meets his gaze, flushes guiltily, she quickly says, in one breathe, "Kalpi is not allowed to go for further studies and vithal uncle is looking for a groom for her. He has decided she is to get married asap."
Seeing the pain Ragav feels reflect in his eyes, Pakhi curses herself for having complied to Kalpi's wishes, she takes a step towards him saying, "I am sorry bhai. I should never have kept it from you." Instinctively Ragav takes a step away from Pakhi, not wating any contact. Regret eats away as Pakhi watches her brother step away from her, unsuccessfully tryingt to control her emotions... Her tears over Ragav's rejection.
Sammy and Maya look at each other, silently communicating their sorrow over the news Pakhi just gave. Shocked to the core, for he had never suspected that there was more to the worry he had sensed from Kalpi when they spoke, Ragav thinks sadly, "Oh Kalpi, why would you not share your worries and problems with me. Instead you kept reassuring me that everything will get better... That I should not worry." He says aloud, his voice filled with emotions, "I need to speak to her. I need to see her. I..." He looks around the room helplessly.
Gathering his thoughts, he says, "I need a moment alone." "Sure," Sammy, Pakhi amd maya reply in unison as they scramble out of his office. Sighing Ragav calls kalpi. Keeping his voice light, he says softly, "Maya mentioned you handed in your resignation." Smiling weakly into the telephone, Kalpi replies, "yea. Dad would like me to enjoy my holidays before university begins." Kalpi shuts her eyes, hiding away her pain for having to lie to him, mentally telling herself, "it is for the best. Why should both of us be sad."
Ragav does not speak for everal seconds, his heart aching that she would lie to him... That she would hide things from him... That she would hide her pain from him. He knew that it was her selfless love that led her to do this, but it still hurt. Taking a deep breathe, he says, "Pakhi told me everything."
Kalpi clutches the phone to the chest, shutting her eyes as silent tears fall, thinking, "oh no. He knows."
"Kalpi... Kalpi...", Ragav says into the phone, "Kalpi... Are you there? Hello..." Receiving no answer he tries not to panic.

Taking several seconds to compose herself, Kalpi takes a deep breathe, forcing herself to keep her voice light, she says, "Ragav, please don't worry. Baba is just angry. He does not mean any of it." "But Kalpi," Ragav interrupts, his voice filled with concern. Only to have Kalpi interrupt him as she continues to reassure him, in a soft voice she says, "Ragav please give baba time to get over his anger." Sighing, Ragav gives in and agrees. Kalpi immediately says, her voice infused with worry, "Ragav please don't dk anything in haste." "Got it Kalpi," Ragav snaps, "no giving a piece of my mind to the elders for keeping us apart. I am not upset our parents!"
Kalpi silently listens to him rant out his frustrations over their situation. As he vents away, voicing his frustrations, Ragav realises how silly he sounds. Taking a deep breathe, forcing himself to be calm, he says, "I am sorry. I should not have lashed out at you. I..." "Don't be silly," Kalpi says in a smiling voice, "you only lash out on those who you consider yours."

Ayaan Mehta stares at his grandmother in disbelief, turns towards his mother saying, "grams is joking, right." Simran looks at him with a grin and says, "sorry son. This is no joke. Your dad and I totally agree with your dadi. It is time for you to get married." "This is bullshit. I am only twenty four," he snaps. "Try to understand,"his mother explains, "you have decided that you want to live in the US for the next five years for your career and the experience you will garner before you join your father's business." "What's wrong with that," he interrupts. Shaking her head, his mother continues, "nothing is wrong with it. In fact it is very commendable. But understand this... You will be all alone and we will worry. If you get married and go with your wife... We will worry less because you won't be alone."
Ayaan looks at his mum with understanding and says, "I understand and respect your emotions mum, but I won't be alone. I have friends." Seeing the worry I her eyes, he continues, "okay how about this... I only get married if I like her. No pressure." Relieved, simran smiles and says, "done". Kisses hi on his forehead and leaves, saying, "you must be tired, rest."
Staring after his mother in disbelief, he calls his buddy Ragav Singhania.
Ayaan: hey buddy. Am back for a month.
Ragav: when did you arrive?
Ayaan: just this morning. Three hours ago.
Ragav: let's catch up in the evening.
Ayaan: dinner at the club?
Ragav: sounds good.
