Of course @Amy.r channels interfere.You might have noticed in the credits,they have a programme supervisor on behalf of the channel.Like in EMA Raziya Rizvi is the programme supervisor for Zee.
Everything has got to do with TRPs.Because high TRPs=Good sponsorships=Huge revenues.Because revenue from sponsorships accounts for 40% of the total revenues of a channel,the other 60%being driven by subscription fees.TRPs come out every week and the channels monitor it on a continuous basis,so if TRPs start to dip,they get their brains into overdrive and interfere.
Let me show you 2 instances.
1:Badalte Rishton ki dastaan premiered on Zee on March 18, 2013 .Had a different story,not the usual saas bahu drama that pulls in the TRPs.The show had TRPs of 1.0 even as low as 0.9.Zee asked the makers to change the storyline like they(Zee) wanted.The makers refused and the show was pulled off air on June 28, 2013 barely 4 months after it went on air.Shows how much channel can interfere.
2:Rab se Sona Ishq,a love story went on air on Zee in 2012.It was shot extensively in London,was pretty good.It failed to bring in the TRPs and they relocated the cast to India,changed the storyline to garner higher TRPs.I can't find the article but I remember some ZEE spokesperson saying "The storyline had to be changed to a family drama to bring in more TRPs".If you have watched the show,they completely revamped the show,putting in every possible illogical twist & turn
So yes,channels are the ultimate string pullers because they want more and more revenues.They are just like any other business venture.Makers have to listen to them otherwise show is pulled off air.
Creatives decide on the storyline but they have to abide by the channel's dictates which is ultimate.
Why the revamp,I can only guess & my guess is as good as yours.As per some reports,either Qubool Hai or EMA was to go off air to make way for Jamai Raja but they ended Do Dil Bandhe Ek Dori Se.Why,I can only guess.
1:EMA is produced by DJs.DJs have made successful shows for ZEE in the past.Hence good relationships between channel and Production House.
They made "BANEGI APNI BAAT" for Zee in 1993.Show was a huge hit,still considered one of the most popular shows on TV till date.
Then they produced "Jab Love hua" I guess.Recent hit would be Chhoti Bahu which was a hit.Even it was resumed for a second season,testimony to its popularity.
Maybe that's why they gave DJs another chance.Besides,DJs have been producing & directing since 1993.And they aren't stubborn enough to force the channel to pull the plug on their show,rather they are willing to enable the channel to intervene so that the show goes on.
Such significant changes like revamp,having a bearing on the future of the shows are determined by the channel & producers.
About showing actors the door,that's the producer's call.I don't think creatives have that much sway over such decisions.They just determine the story.But then to do that you have to be that powerful
Case in point "NIVEDITA BASU" the creative of Ekta Kapoor's many a hit shows and long time friend had excellent personal relationships with Ekta,so she was powerful enough to decide on things,make decisions along with Ekta.
Actors are often kicked out when they are too much of a nuisance for the production house like "Karan Singh Grover-Qubool Hai" or "Rajeev Khandelwal-Kahiin to Hoga(Star Plus)".
Rajeev Khandelwal was the male lead for Ekta's hit show Kahiin to Hoga.He had some differences with Ekta over it and he left amid much tension in 2005.There were reports in the media about Star Plus having blacklisted Rajeev for good.Maybe that was a bit exaggerated but Ekta's shows then contributed to a huge portion of the revenues of Star Plus,so maybe some part of the news was true.
But when revamps like in EMA happen with the actors being shown the door,that's the channel's decision forcing the hand of the producers.Major decisions affecting the prospects of a show are made by the channels.
