Chapter 5: "Your Advice"
Kalpi was sitting in her cubicle and working. Her eyes raced through files one after another, she typed out documents at high speed; really, her calibre was remarkable. But something more remarkable was the grace she seemed to have even while working, whatever she does seems so graceful and beautiful as if she's dancing... Raghav thought while staring at her. He had been staring at her like this all day - he couldn't take his eyes off her, beautiful as she was - with a few interruptions by some stupid people calling for work. Whenever such interruptions occurred Raghav would question himself as to why he's behaving like this, staring at Kalpi all the time forgetting everything, but the next instant he'd go back to admiring her...
Why he was feeling like this was still a mystery to him... Till a few days ago, he'd have convinced himself some way or the other that it was just because she's Kamla Ma's daughter, but now he had fully realised that it was way beyond that, especially after she hugged him the previous day, but why he was feeling like that for her, he couldn't understand or accept...
"Raghav, can you hear me?" his thoughts were interrupted by Sammy, who, it appeared, had been saying something. Raghav finally turned and replied, "Y-yes of course, why wouldn't I be able to hear you..."
"Well, apparently, you were busysomewhere else..." Sammy said with a smirk, looking at Kalpana.
Raghav chose to ignore it. "Anyways, what were you saying?"
Sammy told Raghav about some meeting and left. Raghav kept thinking about his actions and Sammy's comment. "Is it so obvious?" He said to himself, What if Kalpi notices?' What if someone else notices?' the questions kept running through his mind, making him self-conscious. He brushed it off and returned to what he was doing - which obviously was staring at his Kalpana, who was completely oblivious to the fact that her KhadoosAkdoo boss had been thinking about her day and night for the last few days. Kalpi was just preparing to leave when she got a call from her aai. "Yes Aai, I'm just leaving from office... yes, Pakhi has also left... no, I don't know... Aai,I'll get a bit late today... I-I'm going out for something, I'll explain later... ok bye."
Raghav had been standing behind her and had observed the change in her tone and expression as the conversation turned to Pakhi. Her cheerful tone became a bit gloomy on hearing that her aai wanted to know about Pakhi. This confused Raghav. As far as he had seen, the two girls were quite friendly around each other. He had rarely seen Kalpi sad because of Pakhi, but after all, how much had he seen? He knew so little about their lives that he couldn't understand anything...
He saw Kalpi leaving, and instinctively followed her. He was about to take his car, but noticed that she was going on foot, so he also followed suit.
She went to a lonely beach. She used to come here to relieve herself whenever she was worried or sad. She sat down looking at the sunset. Silent tears flowed down her face, giving no clue to the reason. Kalpi was remembering all the times when her aai said she'll stay with her but left her alone because of a single call from Pakhi. She was never able to fathom why was she so unlucky, that she didn't even get her mother's love and attention.
Raghav, who was standing a bit behind her deliberating whether or not to face her, finally mustered up the courage and went to sit beside her. Above everything, he had to know the reason for her grief. Kalpi looked up, surprised, and hurriedly wiped her tears.
"Sir, aapyahan?"
"Kyu?Is this beach reserved by you? Or are there any restrictions on me?"
"No" Kalpi replied and turned back towards the sea "Nothing..."
Raghav wanted to ask her, but didn't know how to. His curiosity was growing every minute.
"You know, I've heard that if you share your pain, it decreases. And... uh... talking to someone who... doesn't concern your life is... easier... because - because it wouldn't matter what they think - "
"Sir, are you advising me to - what was it -share my pain' with you?" Kalpana, whose eyebrows had been rising with every word Raghav spoke, finally interrupted him. Iss khadoos ko aajkyahogaya?' she was thinking. Today suddenly he's talking about sharing pain? And that too, to me?' Kalpi was bewildered with the sudden change in his attitude, but tried not to show it.
Raghav searched for words, "Uh... yeah... I mean, maybe... if you want to... I mean, I was just advising you to talk to someone..."
"Hmm... you know, sir, your advice applies to you too..." Kalpi said calmly.
Raghav knew exactly what she had meant. His expressions immediately hardened.
"It's different for me... I'm different from others..." Raghav replied, keeping his cool.
"You're different from the world?" Kalpana asked, sceptical. Oh really? How come? Got an extra tail and a couple of horns, have you? Or are you from another planet? So arrogant... thinks he's extraordinary...' was what she was thinking, but decided against voicing it. It's not everyday that Khadoos is in a good mood...
"Yes, I am"
"So let's assume for the moment that I am, too, and close the topic. By the way, what are you doing here? Why did you follow me?" Kalpi asked.
Raghav was shocked. "Actually I-I... Why would I follow you? I just..." He looked at Kalpi and gave up.
"So what? Yes I did follow you, I wanted to talk to you, so what?"
"Nothing! I was just asking why you required my company... what was so urgent that you followed me to talk to me?"
"I, uh, I-I wanted you advice!"
"My advice" Kalpi repeated, sceptical yet again.
"Yes, I needed your advice, about... the project. You've got any problem with that, miss Jadav? Can't I ask my employees for some advice on a project? And after all, you only got us that project, and if I remember correctly, it was you only who was showing off about her capabilities. Let's see how much of your words are true. Abhi doodh ka doodh paani ka paani ho jaayega..."
"Okay"
They discussed about the project all evening, Raghav silently admiring her. Really, it was not at all over confidence that she had on herself. Her intelligence was enough to impress even Raghav. Now I'll have to find mere stupid excuses for not promoting her, atleast till the end of the month... Raghav Singhaniyacan't lose a challenge so easily, can he? Plus it'll make her over confident if she got a promotion barely a week after joining...' Raghav thought as she talked on about the project.
Raghav dropped her home, despite her constant insistence that she'll manage, and then started for his, all the time thinking about the day's events. Today, they had taken a little step from mutual dislike towards understanding and coordination.
Sammy was surprised to find his friend so cheerful and smiling the whole time. He even asked him a few times, but didn't get any worthwhile reply. He, however, could very well guess the probable reason for Raghav's odd behaviour.
"Love is in the air..." Sammy sighed to himself.
