Chapter 7

I was surprised to see mom there." Mom, what happened? Why are you awake? Do you need anything? Where is the nurse? What is the time?" I glanced at the clock on the wall- 3am

She smiled "Relax, Chintu...I was just feeling thirsty so came out..."

I got up suddenly from the sofa and proceeded to go to her room "But I had told the nurse to keep water beside your bed. Where is she?? Nurse..Nurse"

Suddenly mom caught my hand ..."Come on , Chintu...please calm down!!... I woke up and found her dozing off..and before u start, she has kept water by the bedside. Its ok...she was taking care of me till now right..so what if she is catching a few winks ...But, I..I..Actually, I had not seen you around since evening; so I thought of checking up on you!!"

"Oh..ok..did you drink water? Or should I get it for you." I didn't know why, but I was feeling uncomfortable. Sensing my discomfort, she let go of my hand "Its ok..I will get it myself"

It was then she spotted my unfinished sandwich and coffee..."Chintu, it seems that you have not eaten anything ..What happened,beta?"

"Just didn't feel hungry.."

"I am sorry I awoke you...Why don't you sleep in your room?"

"No need to apologise..I was just lost in thoughts..Not feeling sleepy."

She sat on the sofa and pointed at the seat near her..."Since both of us are not feeling sleepy, why don't we talk? Come Chintu, sit by me"

"Hmm..ok"

What followed was an awkward silence..She gently ruffled my hair as I looked on. I was feeling uneasy. Even though she was my mother, she seemed like a total stranger...

Finally she spoke "How are you my dear? ...I really want to know more about you...All we have talked about is the Kapoors. Let's keep them aside...I want to talk about you..how have you been copin, what have you been doing..your friends..your life!"

"All good"...was the only thing I could come up and looked away. She smiled weakly "I should have known better...after all these years ...much water has flown under the bridge..I can't expect you to open up to me immediately..."

"Mom... I am feeling sleepy..Can we have this conversation later?" I stood up signaling the end of our talk...

She stood up sadly..."Sorry, Chintu!! Sorry that I was not there for you all these years"

I lifted my hands defensively "No, you don't have to apologize for anything. It was not your fault!!"She took a step forward and caressed my cheeks "No..along the line I am also partially to blame!!..Agreed that Sahil had created a rift between me and your dad and from then onwards our relationship went downhill...but now looking back, I wish I had put in more efforts to save my marriage...then things would have been probably different now!!"

I could see tears in her eyes..not letting her say anything more, I hugged her tight "Shh..it's ok Mom, I don't blame you..now that we are together we can start off again " I wiped her tears "Mom. Go and take rest now!! I will see you after you wake up"

As I turned away, she caught my hand "Who is Kalpana?"

I was shocked "Why...what..how..huh?!!". She responded with a smile "Ok, so I got the name right !! Otherwise you would have asked me who!! Earlier you woke up saying her name aloud.. I am guessing it must be someone special!!" Sensing my discomfort, she chuckled "No problem, we will have this discussion later"...Just before she entered her room "Kalpana..er...why does that name ring a bell?"

I was confused "Why did she say that? Does she know Kalpi?...no, how can that be..maybe some other Kalpana"

[Flashback]

Conversation with Dr. Gupta...

"Doctor, it seemed that mom got her memory back..but she remembers things in only bits and pieces...She remembers what happened years back and also recalls some recent events...but nothing more...She is still clueless on where she had been all these years!!"

"Look, Mr.Singhania, traumatic memories are often the easiest to remember. This is because these are highly stressful and quite often overwhelm the person. Very strong emotions are associated with it. These negative emotions actually triggers brain activity the most. All the other memories are repressed for the moment. But I am sure, just like she remembered the negative memories, she will remember the positive ones too..We can never say what exactly will trigger it or when will she regain her entire memory..But we can hope!!

Sammy's house

The whole night Sammy had been pacing around in his room silently cursing me. He had always known that I was adamant and arrogant. But this time even he agreed that I had gone too far!! All the efforts to unite me and Kalpi had gone down the drain just because of one decision of mine... Unable to face Kalpi's questioning eyes, he had set out to find her groom..After searching high and low for me with no success, Sammy had gone back to the mandap to break the news to Kalpi..On seeing me with Pakhi, he had skulked away for fear of being reprimanded...

Hearing some sound outside, he went outside to find his mom in front of the telly.

6 am

I was on the treadmill when I heard the doorbell ring. Who could it be so early in the day??I opened the door to see a pair of angry eyes staring back at me..

"Sammy!!"

The next moment, I felt a blow to my jaw "You b******!!Insolent brat!! You have crossed your limits!!"

"Sammy, stop..just listen"

But he didn't stop there...he caught hold of my collar "How could you..huh..how could you Raghav?? After all my efforts to help you get Kalpana...I have always stood by you..but not his time..I f you wanted to revert to your earlier plan, why involve Kalpana in the first place...I had warned you earlier to get your priorities straight..."

I was getting pissed now "Sammy, stop right there..let me explain!!"

He gestured me to stop "Nothing, and I mean nothing will make me support you in this despicable deed!! You even kept me in the dark..My parents were ashamed...they were there on your behalf right!!"

"Sammy, shut up!!Will you let me speak?"

Hearing the commotion, mom came out of her room concerned "Chintu, is everything ok? What happened?"

I did not miss the shocked expression on Sammy's face. "Nothing mom...no prob...come let me introduce you to my best friend, Sammy..Sammy Raizada"

Sammy shot me an angry look upon hearing the words "best friend"

"Oh..hi beta...I am Gauri, Raghav's mom...nice to meet you!! Please why are you standing?..have a seat..Would you like a cup of coffee?"

"Yes, aunty ..that would be nice!!"

Sammy looked baffled...As mom turned away, he suddenly caught my shoulder "This..this is your mom"

"Yeah..."

"Dude, this I didn't expect...you have screwed big time!! I never knew you could be so ruthless!!"

"What the heck are you talking about?" I was getting confused now. I expected him to be surprised to see mom but this reaction...

"Come on Raghav, your mom and Kalpi..."

"Sammy, what has my mom got to do with Kalpi?"

"So you don't realize.."

I was impatient.. "Sammy, stop beating around the bush and just spit it out!!"

"Your mom and Kalpi's tai are one and the same!!"

This left me reeling "What..but how can that be?? How do you know.."

"I had seen her on the day when we went to the chawl after resolving Kalpana's results!!

Everything came crumbling down...One more reason to hate myself!! I had hurt the family who had protected my mom all these years!!

My thoughts were broken by mom bringing in coffee..She sat down beside me "Sammy beta, very glad to have met you...I was telling Raghav that I didn't know anything about him...Thnak you so much for being a good friend to my Chintu...By the way, I must say you look very familiar..But I can't recall why...Please stay for breakfast..why don't u guys continue while I get things ready..ok" After she left for the kitchen, I told him what had happened the previous day...Sammy sat there with his face covered "You are in a whole lot of mess!! You better rectify ASAP or else you will definitely lose Kalpana forever"

While serving breakfast, mom brought up the topic again "Sammy beta, why do I feel I have seen you ...just recently" I slowly shook my head at Sammy... I had decided against reminding her anything for now...Suddenly, she spoke up "Oh..yes...you were at the chawl the other day...You had come with Kalpi's sir!!"

Turning to me she said "Chintu, now I remember why the name Kalpana had sounded so familiar..In fact Kalpana and her family were the ones who had given me shelter and protected me from those rascals!! And do you know where they live...in our chawl itself..There is Kalpi, her aai Kamla, her baba Vittal and her bro Pakya...If it were not for them, I would have been dead a long time ago" Her voice was cracking..."and Kalpi...she is an angel..she was the one to wipe my tears, make me laugh...Do you know what, she is in love with her sir!! Her marriage had been fixed...Did I miss it? Chintu, we must go over and meet them!!" She paused for a second..looked at Sammy and then back at me before continuing "Wait a sec...is this the same Kalpana you were dreaming about?? Are you her sir??"

Without looking at her, I nodded..."Wow, Chintu...I am so happy...I am just in time to witness my son's marriage and I get Kalpi as a daughter too!!" I kept silent not knowing how to break the news to her..Sensing something was amiss, she asked "Is something wrong? Why are you both not speaking up?"

Finally, I told her how I had "married" Pakhi for vengeance.

She was astounded by this news...She smacked my hand hard "How could you?? Is this the way to take revenge..by hurting yourself and the one you love??How could you even think of breaking Kalpi's heart!!"

"Mom. I did this for you..."

"For me...for me...you idiot!!"...

I wanted to run for cover!!

Placing her palm against her forehead, she continued" God...How unfortunate am I...I came into my son's life to take away his happiness...I curse the moment that he found me...Why is destiny playing a cruel game on me?" I could see her feeling faint...I immediately caught her and said "Mom...please sit for some time. Stop stressing out!!"

"Don't you touch me Chintu!! I was sure I didn't give birth to a fool..but u proved me wrong". She walked away..

I knew there was no point in trying to pacify her at the moment. It took her a while to come out of her room...

She came to the living room where I was seated with Sammy...Focussing her gaze on Sammy "Did you know anything of his plans?" Sammy lifted up his hands defensively "No...aunty..I had nothing to do with it!! In fact I was giving him an earful when I came."

"Good..else I would have asked you to get out of my house"

She gave me a steely stare "Chintu, you claimed that you did this for me right...So will you do something else for me too"

"Mom, whatever you want..."

"Ok, Put revenge on hold...I want you to embark on Mission RAGNA!!" She suddenly smiled and winked at Sammy. I was confused "RAGNA?? What does that mean?" Sammy was chuckling...Seeing my confusion, he guffawed!! "What, Sammy??Mom??...Am I missing something? Would someone please care to explain?"

Sammy replied "I must say for a business tycoon, you are sometimes half-witted!! Of all the people , you should know what RAGNA is ...RAGNA is RAGHAV and KALPANA..."

I was flabbergasted. She sat beside me and said "Your happiness should always be first and foremost...You have suffered enough...I want Kalpi here, by your side.Loving and being loved are the best experiences of life. People like Kalpi who never fail to bring a smile to your face and who will watch out for you are quite hard to find...You should never let them go..believe me, I know how it hurts when you are away from the love of your life. Do something before it is too late...You don't want to end up like me!!"

I was overwhelmed...I kissed her hand "I promise mom...I will bring your daughter - in law home!!"

"OK..enough of this..come finish your breakfast!! Sammy, come on!!"

I threw a cushion at Sammy when he said "Aunty, shouldn't it be Mission CHIPANA..CHINTU and KALPANA or how about CHILPI- CHINTU and KALPI!!"

As both of them walked away to the dining table, I thought to myself "Bappa, you were so eager to point out my mistakes. But couldn't you just have appeared to me before I broke Kalpi's heart and stopped me? Oh..I forgot you always take your own time!!"

It was uplifting for me to see them both laughing away though at my expense...

Hugs ...Charu!! yeah..I cant digest the Gauri in the series...So I made her positive.😛 and abt the mission RAGNA, it was partly inspired by one of Sammy's tweets!!😉
