"You're avoiding her.."
Raghav jumped a little as he heard Sammy speaking in a low voice.
"Jesus Sammy! You scared me. When the heck did you come in? I didn't even hear you!"
Sammy slightly smirked.
"Yeah, these days your brain is always somewhere else. You rarely notice me at all!"
Contrary to what Sammy believed, Raghav always noticed Sammy around albeit it was mostly when he was with Kalpi. However, he didn't need to know that.
Raghav cleared his voice and went back to work.
"So you are avoiding her.."
"Unfortunately you're going to need to be more specific than that seeing as there are several hers' that I avoid.."
"Hah! Nice one. You know who I meant - Kalpi," Sammy finished off unamused.
Raghav uttered a noncommittal hmph.
Sammy sighed. After couple of minutes of silence, he continued.
"Remember how we first met? I was getting beaten up and you saved me from getting bullied. After that, no one messed with me because they thought I was your friend. But no one wanted to be friends with me either."
"Oh, sorry about that." Raghav said, with a slightly apologetic expression.
"Don't be! That's the reason I started following you around. God, I still remember. You were so rude to me. You used to say such hurtful things and I was almost tearing up sometimes. And I feel no shame in admitting that!"
Raghav slightly smirked at that and waited for Sammy to continue.
"I still remember that it was the day my parents got divorced and I didn't want to say anything to you since I was always such a bother and you were always annoyed by me. So I didn't follow you around that day. In fact, I didn't see you for couple of days after that since I was still sad about that. Do you remember what you did?" Sammy paused to wait for Raghav's reply.
"Oh yes. I was wondering where that kid with the goatee went," he laughed after finishing his slightly sarcastic statement.
"Exactly! You were worried sick looking for me. You even went to my apartment looking for me and when they told you that I went AWOL after hearing about my parent's divorce, you were looking for me all day. And remember when you found me? I was drunk as heck with a very high fever. You took me in and cared for me. You know what I realized after that? The reason you pushed me away wasn't because I was annoying or I didn't have much of brain or status. It was because you didn't want me getting hurt in any way for being friends with you." Sammy finished off with a slight smile.
Raghav sighed and paused whatever he was doing to look up at him, giving Sammy his full attention knowing that Sammy wouldn't stop until he made his point.
"What exactly is your point here?"
"Is it the same case with Kalpi? "Sammy cocked his head and asked.
Raghav widened his eyes, finally understanding where Sammy was taking this, before getting back to typing his proposal.
"Sammy I think you have been using your brain too much these days and it's malfunctioning now. You should take a day off so it's not overworked," he finished off pointedly.
"Would you stop this silly notion of whoever comes near you always gets hurt'? Till how long will that be an excuse for keeping people away? Eventually you would need to let someone in. No. Eventually someone will come in and there's nothing you would be able to do then! How will you stop it then?" Sammy continued on relentlessly.
"Sammy it's not some silly notion. People close to me did get hurt a lot. Or have you forgotten that little fact?"
"Raghav, that had nothing to do with you! I mean, look at me. I am close to you. Do you see me hurt? I am as healthy as they come," he finished off in a matter-of-fact tone.
"Yeah because you're a powerful man in your own rite. But she isn't there yet. She's barely starting to fly right now."
"Ahh and you don't want to clip her wings? My my, so you do care a lot for her! And you did let someone in," he smiled slyly.
Raghav cleared his throat.
"No! I mean yaar...of course I care. She's Kamla Ma's daughter. I would never wish harm upon her. I owe that much to Kamla Ma."
Sammy rolled his eyes. "Of course it's because of Kamla Ma.."
"You know what? I am gonna let that tone slide because I know that no matter what I do or so, it won't prove to you that I am not interested in her that way," Raghav said exasperated.
"And what way would that be?" Sammy inquired.
Raghav looked up at him pointedly and Sammy just shrugged.
"The fact that you would actually go so far as wanting to prove, that means that there is something there to disprove right?"
"Sammy.."
"Yes Raghav?"
"Shut up!"
Sammy laughed.
"Alright. Then you shouldn't have a problem with what happens next."
"And what exactly is happening next?" Raghav asked worried.
"Ah. You'll know exactly what I am talking about when it happens," Sammy finished off secretively.
With that, he left a confused Raghav wondering about the inevitable with a sinking feeling in his chest.
He was so lost in thinking about what Sammy had said, that he hadn't once thought about her in the past two hours (which was a new record for him in a while). However, was the destiny ever that generous to him for very long time? No.
He looked up to register the fact that she was getting in the elevator with him. Of course, the panic he felt had nothing to do with the fact that they would be alone in a very tight space, in close proximity. He shifted further away from her, to the corner opposite hers. What irked him was the fact that she hadn't even seemed to register his presence and seemed to be engrossed in the file in her hand.
He watched her like a hawk from the corner of his eyes. His lips started curling up as he saw her furrow her brows while biting the right corner of her lower lip in concentration. Yes, that's the girl he had come to grow fond of.
Alas, the moment didn't last long and the elevator clicked open. He slowly looked away. She hadn't moved from her spot. He subtly cleared his throat. She seemed to have realized that it was her floor and she started rushing out. That was the exact moment when the elevator decided to shut its doors. His hand shot up before he realized. He felt his hands pulling her back, towards himself.
He sighed in relief as he realized that she was safely standing beside him. He looked at her.
"Seriously? Can I take my eyes off of you for one second? The one moment I am not looking out for you, you go walking into elevator doors!" he spoke to her frustrated.
She opened her mouth to say something but froze when she saw his hand.
He looked down at his hand and his right knuckle was turning red. That's when he realized that he hit his hand to the elevator door when he held her shoulder and pulled her back.
He looked up to see worry crease her features as she slowly touched his hand. He wince slightly when she pressed on his reddened knuckle.
When she realized that the gesture hurt him, she slowly blew on his wound.
He had completely frozen in that moment for two reasons. One, the sensation of the slightly cool air touching his wound felt really nice. Second, he was wishing for her to have not clipped up her hair so he could lift his hand and tug a strand of her lose hair behind her ear.
He quickly snatched hands from her due to the absurdity of his thoughts.
She looked up at him and slightly smirked.
"Is it really me who needs to be more careful?" She folded her hands and raised her right brow at him.
"And who do you think is the reason that this happened?" Raghav gaped at her.
She laughed slightly.
"Sir, you do realize that the elevators have sensors in them right? The doors would have stopped from shutting as soon as they sensed my presence."
Raghav's eyes widened again. How could he have forgotten that little detail?
"Sir.."
He begrudgingly looked down at her.
"Still, Thank You."
And those two words had tugged at his heart with so much intensity that he wasn't able to forget the soft expression in her eyes and the heartfelt smile on her face (the same smile that made him feel like he was the most important person) at that moment.
Now Raghav Singhania was sharp if anything at all. He knew that it would be best to keep his distance from Kalpi. No, it wasn't because he felt attracted to her in anyway. It wasn't because he felt like he was lost everything he looked into her eyes either. Or the fact that he seemed to be missing a lot of important details and acting irrationally. It was merely because he felt that he was giving Sammy a wrong impression, granted that the misunderstanding happened only because he was avoiding her in the first place. However, he had nothing to prove to Sammy so he would go on to what he was initially doing and keep out of her way so she can keep out of his.
What Raghav Singhania failed to realize was that his acts were not going unnoticed by the said person he should be avoiding. She was fully aware of his actions and was more than offended to realize that he was avoiding her. Of course, she wasn't Kalpana Jadhav for nothing. She still respected his boundaries and went on to keep out of his way.
That is, until she passed by his office and saw him struggling with the computer. On closer look, she realized that he was actually having a hard time typing with one hand since his other hand was hurt.
Raghav pursed his lips as he tried to type up the rest of his email, only to realize that he was typing slower than his train of thoughts and was actually forgetting what he should've typed. He sighed in frustration and got up abruptly, only to collide into the one and only Kalpana Jadhav. He felt himself being pulled by the tie and falling. He tried his best to stabilize himself by (accidentally) using his injured hand that held on firmly to the table. Once he realized his position, his now stable heartbeat only began to rise.
He saw himself pinning Kalpi to the table, with (both) of his hands on either side of her as she looked startled. He didn't really know how to react at that moment, so he just looked into her eyes surprised. After few long moments, he winced slightly as the pain caught on. Before he could move his eyes towards his wound to address it anyhow, he felt her turning to it. She lightly touched his hands and pressed her index finger on his knuckle.
"Ouch! Stop doing that. It still hurts!" he whined.
"Oh sorry. Just wanted to check if it got better. It looks even worse than before. It's turning purple. Did you take any medication or put anything on it?"
He cleared his throat and backed up a little (because the smell of her perfume wasn't helping his brain cells in forming a coherent answer). He slowly tried to take his hand away from her to brush her off but she stubbornly held on to it. He sighed.
"No I didn't really have time to address my small wound when I have a big company to run.." he tried to take his hand from her grip again.
"You don't need hands to run a company. You need brain, which I am sure is fully functional at the moment for you. Why didn't you call Sammy or Me? We could've helped you!"
"You guys both have already been assigned your own work. Besides it's not really that bad. I can still work."
It was her turn to shake her head in exasperation.
"I knew you would say that!" she finished off with a sigh again.
Before he could reply, he felt something cold on the back of his hand, giving his knuckle instant bliss. He looked down to see an icepack. Why didn't he think of that? Apparently, even his brain wasn't fully functional at the moment.
"Here. Why don't you hold onto this while I type everything up for you?"
"And what exactly am I supposed to be doing when you do my work?"
Kalpi slightly nudged him towards his sofa. "You're supposed to sit and shut your eyes for a bit. You look exhausted you know that? You need some rest."
"Kalpi I am fine! I don't need anyone to babysit me, especially you!"
Kalpi folded her arms and looked at him with a glare. That's the reason Raghav quickly shut off all of his protests and sat comfortably on the sofa while she went to type away on his laptop. She didn't even ask for his instructions - as if she had been planning this. He sighed again and closed his eyes.
After few hours of quiet (with no noise other than the dull noise of the typing), Raghav awoke to his door being pushed open with a cheerful Sammy barging in.
"Kalpi are you done yet?"
Raghav winced at the sudden change in volume in the room as he opened his eyes to find his office door left ajar.
"Yes Sammy. I am almost done."
"Seriously Kalpi. You and Raghav are same. Everyone almost left already and you guys are still here working!"
Kalpi smiled as she closed all of the files and signed off from the computer.
"Bas chalo. I am starving yaar. Come on! We are getting late for our date!" Sammy urged her loudly.
"Yeah yea. I am done already! Let's go baba. By the way, we are going to the place near your house right?"
"Yeah that one. Ab chalo!"
Before she left, she turned around to meet eyes of the stunned Raghav.
"Sir, I have done your work for the day and signed off already. The files are on your desk. The email is sent. The appointment is made for next week as that was the earliest they could do. And your coffee is on the table so you should have that before heading home."
Raghav nodded, still in daze, as she bid adieu to him. Sammy also turned to him and winked as he lead her away.
Amidst all of this, Raghav felt his heart give him a tight tug as he felt his throat constricting. He took a big gulp of the coffee to clear his mind. The only thing that his brain seemed capable of thinking was the date that Kalpi and Sammy seemed so happy on going. What was worst was that he felt a rising bile of disgust crawling up from the back of his throat as he realized that this was the inevitable that Sammy was previously talking about.
