Chapter 15: Yearnings

Kalpi sets the table while the rest lounge in the sitting room engaged in polite conversation. Ragav is happy for the opportunity to interact with his mum in a group atmosphere. It has been so long that he needs people around him, so that he has some semblance of control over his emotions for his mother and does not breakdown in her presence. He has so much he wants to say to her, he yearns for her hugs and to lay his head on her lap. Raghav sighs, closes his eyes, trying to curb his desires, and tells himself, "Be patient Ragav... it shall happen soon."

Ragav opens his eyes; automatically searching for his wife... and thinks to himself that he needs to update her later on the on goings of today. He sees her standing by the dining table, cutlery forgotten in her hands, watching him with concern. "Kalpi", he sighs to himself, and then proceeds to give her a reassuring smile as if to say that he is okay. Needing to be near his wife, Ragav gets up, heads towards Kalpi, and helps her set the table.

Pakhi is lost in thought, confused with the proximity she has observed between Ragav and Kalpi. The Ragav she has witnessed this evening is a Ragav she never knew existed. She watches Ragav help Kalpi set the table and notices the openness and ease between them as they interact, the softness and warmth in his gaze towards Kalpi. Trying to understand this shift in equation between Ragav and Kalpi, Pakhi's gaze rests on Sammy, suddenly realization hits her, "Duh Pakhi, Ragav has opened up to Kalpi because of Sammy... what's there to be confused... Sammy is Ragav's friend, so of course Ragav will be warm and friendly with Sammy's girlfriend," she thinks to herself. Her heart accepts this reason instantaneously not wanting to probe deeper, for deep down Pakhi is not ready to accept the reality of what she had witnessed earlier.

It is clear to Pakhi that Ragav trusts and values Kalpi, yearning for the same, she whispers her fears aloud, "I have lost him." Sammy and Gauri maa stop talking and look at Pakhi, Sammy follows Pakhi's gaze to Ragav, narrows his eyes and looks back at Pakhi and says sharply, "You never had him", and heads towards the kitchen to join Ragav and Kalpi. Upon hearing Sammy's response, Pakhi turns to Sammy startled, realization hitting her that she had spoken her fears out aloud. Confused with Sammy's response, Pakhi wonders if Sammy knows about Ragav's proposal of marriage and thinks dejectedly, "It does not matter, Ragav would never marry me now", her heart yearning for his love.

After dinner Ragav, Sammy and Pakhi head for the terrace while Kalpi helps Gauri maa settle down for the night. Once Kalpi has tucked Guri maa in for the night, she leaves her in the care of the night nurse and heads for the terrace to join them with coffee and cheesecake. On seeing Kalpi heading towards them, Ragav get up and helps Kalpi serve the coffee and dessert. Sammy smiles to himself, liking this domesticated Ragav.

Ragav updates Kalpi on the on goings of the day and tells her that her suspicion about the medication given by Neetu Kapoor's doctor is correct. Sammy takes over the explanation as he notices the Ragav is finding it difficult to maintain control over his emotions, he informs Kalpi that Pakhi had overheard her parents converse about this matter, on the morning Gauri maa was hospitalized and that Pakhi came to him, for she did not know what to do. Pakhi and Sammy go into further details as Ragav sits by quietly listening, his eyes reflecting his pain. Ragav unconsciously takes Kalpi's hand in his, seeking her strength and support, for he is hurting... Kalpi reflexively caresses his palm, trying to soothe him as she quietly listens on. It was such a natural gesture between a couple that it should have gone unnoticed; however, Pakhi notices this and is surprised, but being in denial, dismisses it as just Kalpi being compassionate to a friend.

Ragav looks at Kalpi, his eyes emanating his pain and says hoarsely, "They killed my father first, then tried to steal my wealth and are still trying to kill my mother". Kalpi raises her hand, caresses Ragav's cheek, smiles sadly and says reassuringly, "You are not alone now. We are here to help you seek justice." Pakhi looks on shocked, never expecting Kalpi to behave so boldly, her gesture was very personal; she quickly looks to Sammy for his reaction and is perplexed when she sees him smiling reassuringly towards them and thinks to herself that maybe she is over reacting.

Kalpi looks towards Pakhi, takes her hand into hers and says, "Pakhi thank you for supporting what is right over that of your family. It must be very difficult for you to go against your family..." Pakhi smiles reassuringly and says, "They were never my family, Kamla maa is my family." Sammy thinks to himself, "Pakhi is in denial and not ready to acknowledge the pain that she is going through, knowing that her parents are murderers", with a heavy heart Sammy looks at Pakhi thinking that at least she will have the three of us as her support system when she crashes.

They discuss the different strategies they would need to adopt to get proof for the crimes committed against Ragav's family, to support Pakhi's statement in a court of law. Ragav suddenly leans towards Kalpi, his gaze filled with desire as he wipes the cheesecake crumbs from her lips with his finger; Kalpi turns to him, her gaze reflecting similar emotions as he licks the crumbs from his finger... Pakhi looks on stunned, while Sammy quickly coughs aloud to remind them that they are in company.

Pakhi looks at Sammy, her mind recalling all the incidents that took place over the weeks and realizes that it is not Sammy and Kalpi who love each other... but Ragav and Kalpi. Pakhi gets up and strolls away towards the swimming pool area, needing to be alone, her heart breaking and thinks in anguish as tears silently roll down her cheeks, "Oh Kamla maa, you are mistaken... Ragav never asked you for my hand in marriage, but Kalpi's!"
