Chapter 4

Arnav Singh Raizada ran towards his wife, his heart racing faster than he had thought to be possible. I hope Khushi is ok; she always does the stupidest things, god knows what she could have attempted this time' Suddenly he stopped in his tracks at the sight in front of him, the concern instantly replaced by his trademark anger. Here he was, more scared than he had ever been in his life; except perhaps that other time when he had believed her to be hurt and chased after an ambulance; or when he had stopped breathing at the sight of her attempting to keep balance on that rooftop; or the moment he had cried like a baby, cradling her still body in his arms. Now that he thought about it, every time he had ever been fearful was when it came to Khushi. Just as he was now. And while he had been worried sick about her, she was cheerfully GIVING INTERVIEWS!! He stood there with his arms crossed, a thunderous expression adorning his handsome face. He was just about to step towards Khushi, when suddenly, he was shoved to the side by a frantic NK. Fortunately for him and much to Arnav's irritation, NK had already run quite far by the time Arnav regained his balance and NK was spared the spew of curse words brewing in Arnav's mind.

NK was elated beyond measure at finally being let into the store. In his excitement, he had accidentally shoved aside Nannav, who was standing in the middle of the store, with an uncanny resemblance to a statue of an angry Adonis. When he finally came within sight of Khushiji, NK realized she was giving interviews, and decided to join her.

Khushi was delighted with all the public attention she was receiving. She was entirely deserving of it too; after all, she was the hero of the day. Someone had called the police and with the officers came the media, who had swarmed her with a multitude of questions. She was very busy answering and posing in various positions with the hot pink stiletto, including one in which she pretended to throw it, just as she had aimed it before at that nasty man with the gun. She was so immersed in her playacting that she did not notice NK until he came right up to her.

"Khushiji!! Are you alright? I was so worried!! I am so sorry for leaving you all alone!"

"Nanheji, it's perfectly ok! I am a hero now! Look, I have become so famous!"

"Wow Khushiji! This is so amazing!"

Khushi introduced NK to the reporters and both of them started to pose together for the cameras, Khushi reenacting her attack scene while NK pretended to be the robber. Suddenly, she felt another presence in the room. Her hair started to blow and she felt her heart skip a beat. She turned around immediately, her eyes scanning the room for her Arnavji. She did not have to look for long, as she soon saw him standing there, fuming. Flummoxed, Khushi's smile faltered for a moment at the sight of his furious expression but she brushed aside the trepidation and merrily waved to him, gesturing for him to come closer.I wonder why he is so angry. Is it because I used our romantic moments for inspiration for the attack? Did he feel hurt that I thought of our moments that way? Oh no! Or even worse, did I forget something for the birthday party?! Khushi was about to go and appease him, the way only she could, when she heard one of the reporters.

"Ma'am, can you wait just a moment please? We still have some questions left and then we just need a few more pictures." Khushi quickly turned back to Arnav and pouted, holding up five fingers, telling him to wait, as she once again faced the reporters.

That was the final straw for Arnav. First, he had left his meeting to come to his wife, worried sick about her, only to find her happily answering interview questions. Then, while he was standing there trying to make her notice his death glare, he had been brushed aside by NK, as though he did not even matter. After that, he had made up his mind to wait until she saw him, felt sorry, apologized for her reckless behavior, took her shopping bags, and came home with him to help set up for the party. He had thought the script was going according to plan when, instead of coming to him, she had instead turned around back to those idiots with their annoying microphones and cameras. And she had the gall to wave at him too! And that fool NK was posing with her!! If anyone had to be with Khushi, it should have been him, not his moronic cousin. She's my wife dammit! Finally having had enough, and deciding to hell with the script, Arnav strode towards Khushi, intending to assert control over the ridiculous situation.

He stormed over to Khushi and pulled her to him, as he quickly whispered in her ear, "I think that's enough Khushi. We should leave. NOW."

Khushi turned around. "But Arnavji, what is the emergency? We still have a couple more hours before the birthday party, right?" She turned back to the eager reporters, whose idea of a dream had just come true, in the form of an extremely newsworthy angry business tycoon.

Arnav completely lost it at this point. How dare she refuse him! She was going to come home with him this very instant. He grabbed Khushi by her waist, lifting her up into his arms, carrying her out of the store as she kicked her legs in the air in protest.

Khushi was taken completely by surprise when Arnav picked her up and strode out the store. She was disappointed at first, as she had wanted to finish her interview when she realized Arnav was just eager to congratulate her so she subsided, stilling her flailing legs. She yelled goodbye to the media as they left the store, followed by NK. She smiled to herself as he gently put her down next to the car she had come in with NK. She waited patiently for Arnav to shower her with praise and was very shocked indeed when he started to yell at her instead.

Finally, he was free to express his opinion and the words poured out of him. The floodgates, which had been bursting, had finally been released. "WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING KHUSHI?!? OH WAIT, YOU WEREN'T! AS USUAL! DO YOU KNOW HOW WORRIED I WAS?! WHAT IF SOMETHING HAD HAPPENED TO YOU DAMMIT?!" He screamed incessantly, not letting Khushi get in a word edgewise, though she tried valiantly. NK, for his part, meekly stepped behind the car, hoping Nannav would just forget about his presence. After ten more minutes of continuous shouting, Arnav stopped to take a breath and Khushi seized the chance to explain her version of the story. As she began talking the tears accompanied the words, slowly at first, but starting to intensify as she reached the climax of the tale.

"I was just trying to help Arnavji! You don't understand, h-he-he held a girl at gunpoint." She managed to stutter out in between the sobs.

Arnav's anger immediately subsided, as though the air had been let out by a balloon. He had never been able to deal with Khushi's tears. One little drop and he was putty in her hands. She was aware of this too and often used it to her advantage, as she was doing now. He knew all of this and yet he was unable to stop himself from cradling her lovely face, wiping away the tears.

"I'm sorry Khushi. I understand you were very brave today, but you really scared me. Next time, please call the police or something. If something happened to you, I could never live with myself. I love you Khushi so please, please be careful. For me?" And my sanity, he added silently.

Khushi slowly stopped crying, nodding. "I understand Arnavji and I am sorry too. Let's just go home now." She was about to get into the car when she remembered something. "Oh! I forgot to purchase the jewelry! And I left the sari I chose for Di there!" She turned back to go inside the store when Arnav caught her hand and NK groaned at the thought of another hour of jewelry selections. There was no way Arnav was going to let Khushi go back in there, after what had just happened, and seeing the look on NK's face when she said that also made him shudder at what they would have to suffer through if he allowed her to step through that door.

"Here, take my phone Khushi. You can just buy whatever you need through this app." He handed her his treasured device, from which he would normally never be parted, if the alternative weren't even more horrific.

Khushi looked at him, confused. "What? What is an app? You can buy jewelry through your phone? But how? Where can you put jewelry in such a small phone?" She searched for a secret compartment in which jewelry could possibly be stored.

Arnav laughed. She was so cute. "An app is an application Khushi. You can buy jewelry like this.." He showed her the steps of the application as he let Khushi scroll through the different models.

"Wow Arnavji! This is amazing!! No wonder you love your phone so much! Even I want such a phone now!"

Arnav rolled his eyes, opening the car door and directing Khushi in. He shot a smirk at a grateful looking NK, who had scrambled into the back of the car hastily, before Khushi could change her mind.

"Let's go home now, shall we? We do have a party to plan."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Viren rushed into the accursed store, his normally calm face distorted with fear. He frantically scanned the store, looking for his wife. Oh god, I hope Jeevika is alright! He was in a state of pure panic, when he noticed a huge crowd huddled over something. Or more like someone, he realized, as he pushed his way in and saw his Jeevika collapsed on the ground, with a few people shaking her in an effort to garner a response from her.

"Jeevika! Jeevika? Are you ok!?"

He shoved more people out of his way, trying to reach her. "Move out of the way! She is my wife!!" He finally made his way over to her and gently cupped her face in his hands. At his touch, she snapped up, her eyes regaining life, as though she had roughly been woken up from a deep sleep.

"Virenji?" She sobbed his name and threw herself at him, trembling violently. He hugged her tightly to his chest, stroking her silky hair in an effort to soothe her.

"Jeevika, thank god you're ok. I'm here and you're safe. Now tell me what happened?"

Seeing the young couple ensconced in her own world, the crowd started clearing out while Jeevika narrated the entire story to Viren, shivering uncontrollably as she did. "He was holding a gun to my head Virenji. It was pressed right up here," she held up a shaking hand to her temple. "It was so cold. I was so scared Virenji. If that pink stiletto hadn't hit him, he would have shot me and I'

Viren continued to clutch her, as if she would disappear if he didn't hold on. "Shh it's alright now," he comforted. His hand continued to smooth down her hair when suddenly he stopped, as he realized what she had said. "Wait, what? Did you say a pink stiletto?"

Jeevika looked up at him. "Yes! Someone saved me! A lady who was around my age, I think. I got a glimpse of her face, but then I was too shocked to notice anymore." She looked around the store now, hoping to spot the mysterious woman but to no avail. The store was still extremely crowded and chaotic.

"I bet if I saw her I would be able to recognize her and I have to find her Virenji! I didn't get to say thank you!" She lurched to her feet but she had taken no more than a few steps before her head started spinning. She stopped, swaying on her feet and collapsed right into her husband's waiting arms in a dead faint.

"Jeevika! Jeevika?? Are you alright? Jeevika, please wake up!" When his wife did not respond to him, Viren quickly gathered her up, nearly sprinting out of the store in his haste. He did not notice Arnav striding out of the store with Khushi clutched in his own arms. All Viren could focus on was his wife and the urgency of getting her to a doctor.

Viren quickly walked towards the car and placed Jeevika in the front seat, buckling her in securely. If he had not been so worried, he would have heard Arnav scolding Khushi for her reckless behavior, for which he was immensely grateful, as she had saved his precious wife. But as it was, he did not see his client as he peeled out of the parking lot, breaking every traffic law ever written.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In a record of twenty minutes later, Viren pulled up in front of Dr. Manan's clinic. He opened the door for Jeevika and pulled her into his arms. She was still unconscious, and this did nothing to alleviate his tensions. As he walked into the cool, air-conditioned, building, he was immediately recognized, and nurses and junior doctors alike started to run around, yelling orders.

"Mr. Viren Vadhera is here! Please get a doctor immediately!" Within five minutes, Viren found himself comfortably seated in a consulting room, though he could not bring himself to relax, not without knowing Jeevika's condition.

The door opened and in came a man about thirty years old, with a neatly trimmed beard and warm, brown eyes which twinkled behind the glasses he was wearing.

"Hello Viren. What has Jeevika gotten herself into today?"

Viren stood up and shook hands with his doctor, who had fast become a family friend. This was a man he could trust; Manan had proven himself beyond a doubt. Viren would never forget the amount of help Manan had given to the Vadhera's in Manvi's case.

Now, Viren explained the whole story of what had happened at the wretched store in the mall. "Not only this, but she has not been herself for the past couple weeks as well. She's been more emotional, crying a lot, even for her. Oh, and she threw up a couple of times as well." This was information he had pried out of Manvi, as Jeevika had neglected to tell him, as she didn't want him to worry. This had then resulted in an argument, which had ended when Jeevika had burst into noisy tears, one of the "more emotional" incidents he had just been referring to Manan.

Dr. Manan scratched his chin thoughtfully and replied, "I see. Well, we will run some test with her and be right back. Please wait here. ..Or would you like to come with me?" Manan suggested as Viren looked like he would explode with anxiety. Viren accepted the offer gratefully, following Manan into a room which had a white metal bed with blue sheets, on top of which his wife was lying.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A half hour later, Viren paced up and down in the consulting room, with Jeevika, who had finally regained consciousness, seated in one of the chairs at the desk. Manan had administered a series of simple checkups and tests and they were waiting for him to return with their results.

Viren thought he would wear a hole into the ground in his nervousness when Manan returned, holding a small pile of papers and a huge grin lighting up his face.

"There is nothing to worry about Viren. In fact, I've come with good news."

Viren and Jeevika merely looked at each other, confused. What the hell was Manan talking about?

Satisfied that he had created an aura of suspense, Manan dramatically paused before delivering the verdict.

"Congratulations Viren and Jeevika! You're going to be parents!"
