She watched as the candle wax dripped slowly down the thin elegant body of the candle. The candle illuminated the clock with showed that it was 3 in the morning. The light had went out unexpectedly. According to her Jiju power cuts were not common here so everyone seemed to be more irritated than normal people would be. Someone had come to place a candle in her room. She hadn't even bothered to check who it was imagining it to be her Di or Jiju. Must be Jiju, because he wouldn't want his wife to strain herself too much. He was an expecting father now. There was happiness and laughter all around the Vadhera house, dimmed only by the power cut. She was happy for her di, who was finally going to be a mother. She couldn't believe that she herself was going to have a niece or nephew soon. After the 2 long years she had spent there, finally some good news was heard. She had tried to take part in the festivities, the dance and the songs. But after sometime she had retired to her room not being able to take the loud music anymore. No one stopped her as it was expected from her. After all she had just got rid of blood cancer. Fainting spells and weakness still refused to leave her. She wondered why it was so. Why did they stay when someone else didn't?
She kept her finger at the end of the candle closing her eyes as the liquid wax touched her. It scared her how it didn't hurt her. Mental pain annihilated physical pain. Her mind drifted off to a conversation she had with him, in the same room 2 years ago.
FLASHBACK
"I need to say something Maanvi..don't know how I should say this" He said. He was smiling at her, holding a bunch of roses. She didn't miss the expectant expression his face. She could see he was confident ,in a way. She wished she didn't have to break his confidence. She was at Chandigarh, visiting her di. Her first chemo was over and the doctor had told her that the effect of these were just going to increase with the number. The one thing she had wanted to do before her body started giving up was visit her sister and family. Maybe she knew that things would end up like this. But she couldn't stop herself from taking a chance. And now even after two years she was cursing her decision to visit them.
"What?"she asked ,watching him wince at her sharp tone. It was not that she didn't love him. She did, and she knew it. Which was why she had to do this.
"I love you Maanvi" he said relieved that he had finally said it to her. She stared at him. She really wished she could explain things to him. Including the fact that she just might die. But what if he told everyone else? She also knew that even if she told him he would never leave her side. He would waste his life, his future for her. And she was determined not to let him do that. But still, it was painful fighting against your heart. Especially for her, being as impulsive as she is. She blinked in order to prevent tears messing up her upcoming act .It was time for her to murder Maanvi Chaudary.
He offered her the roses which she snatched away from his hand and threw away roughly. His eyes widened in surprise. He never expected such behaviour from her.
"M..maanvi.."he stuttered.
"Haan Virat..What did you think of me? Or rather how could you think of me like this? Just tell me one thing.. explain any one incident when I showed that I had any such feelings for you?"She shouted trying to avoid his hurt expression. She thanked god that they were alone in the house. But she was feeling a bit faint. Any moment she could fall. She needed to get Virat out of the room and that too as soon as possible.
"Nothing like that..but.." he started to say, his tone much lower than usual. But Maanvi cut him off. She had to. There was no time.
"Bas" she said holding up her hand to silence him. "That's all I wanted to hear from your side. Now let me tell you Virat.."She gulped. Just rejecting him was not enough, he would never leave her if it was something like that. She had to hurt him. "I don't love you ok? Love chodo Virat..I don't even think we were friends."
"Partner.." he whispered..still not over the shock of hearing her say such things. Even a plain rejection might have been too much. But this took things to a whole new level.
"Partner" she repeated him, mimicked him.. "I'm sorry Virat but I don't think you even deserve that.Come on.." she scoffed. "You don't even have a job of your own. You don't even have my respect" Hurt him..hurt him..her mind was chanting but her heart was punishing her for every word. She couldn't breathe. She consoled herself that this will all be over soon. She put all of her energy into saying just 2 words "Get out"
His tear filled eyes met hers. Selfishly she wished he could see the pain in them. But she knew he couldn't. She had become a master of emotions, often hiding them from everyone around her. And she specialized in pain and fear. Her lips unconsciously twisted into an ugly grin. Perfect for the situation. She hoped he would take her teary eyes as a part of anger. Virat turned around slowly, almost mechanically.
He shouldn't come back to her. "And by the way Virat" she said, her voice trembling as she knew this was going to be the last nail in the coffin. He stopped but didn't turn around. Good, because the nausea was almost too much for her now. She gripped the bedside table "I'm in love with doctor Manan"
He stiffened. This was the end and both of them knew it. She wished he wouldn't turn around. And he didn't. He left the room letting the door bang behind him. She immediately slid down resting her head against the bedside. She finally let the tears wet her cheeks. She crawled to the top of the bed and finally felt peaceful. Her heart wasn't hurting her so much. She woke up to see her di's crying face.
"Kya hua di?!"She jumped up to her feet and went to her di.
"Mannu'Virat left the house. He has left a letter telling that no one should search for him or try to contact him. Did Virat tell you something Mannu?"
FLASHBACK ENDS
She opened her eyes. The lights still hadn't come. It didn't make much of a difference to her. She was used to the darkness.
"Get out!"
Virat woke up hearing her words every day. He always dreamt about her. And it always ended with those words. He covered his face with his hands. It has been 2 years. Why did this always happen to him? He sighed and looked up at the clock. Too early. Why did he wake up now? He checked his mobile.12 missed calls from his bhai. He felt tears form in his eyes. Some relationships have no end no matter how hard you try. His bhai had called him every single day of the past two years without fail. He wished he could pick up the phone once and tell him how he has proved himself worthy of being his brother, how he has become a successful lawyer. He wanted to hear the pride and love in his bhai's voice. He wanted to ask him about their mother. Their family .But he couldn't. If he heard his voice'he didn't know if he would be able to stop himself from going back.
Suddenly he received a text message. Again from his bhai. It said--
"Your Bhabhi is pregnant Virat. Im going to be a father and you an uncle. Please come back Virat. Nobody here can be truly happy without you. Please"
He re-read the message. Noone could be happy without him. Except for his bhai's Saali. He hoped she was happy now. Who knew? Maybe she is married to Manan by now. He felt his throat constrict. But he realized it was time for him to go back to where he belonged. Maanvi or no Maanvi. His family awaited him.
