This couldn't be happening to her. She tried going back to sleep but even sleep seemed to be taunting her that night. She heard him move around in the bathroom. He even belted out a few lines of some old beatles song that she vaguely remembered hearing. Well someone seems to be in a good mood, she huffed. Trust him to kill her sleep and enjoy himself. She decided that it would be better if she didn't see him then. But the fact remained that she drifted off to sleep only when she felt his side of the bed sink due to his weight.
She woke up to the soft vocals of Pareshaan again. She yawned and tied her hair. The song was really turning into an addiction for her.It must have rubbed off on Virat too as he must be the one who left it playing before he went to work. She stretched her hand to reach the switch. It was something that Virat had thought of. This switch connected to a bell. Whenever she woke up she was to ring the bell and someone or the other would come upstairs to help her to freshen up. But something seemed strange today .Instead of the smooth polished surface of the switch her hand touched something soft. Something which strangely felt like a human nose.
She jerked back barely managing to stifle the scream that formed on her lips. She looked at Virat who was on his knees and smiling sweetly up at her."You scared me" she accused him, keeping a hand on her chest in an effort to calm her racing heart. She wasn't used to waking up with people around her. Virat left early for work and most of the days she was too tired to wake up before 10.Yes she knew it. She must the most sucky wife in the history of wives. She wondered cancer patients got any special concession.
"Oh" he said sounding a bit worried. He handed her a glass of water which she accepted gratefully. She had just started to drink it when Virat said "I'm sorry Jaan. I just wanted to give you a surprise by taking a day off today" She choked on the water she was drinking .He took the glass from her and gently patted her head. She looked at him wide eyed. Had she heard right? Jaan? When had they gotten to sickly sweet name calling basis?
"Are you ok?" he asked concern evident in his eyes.
"Uh-huh" Maanvi said. As fine as one can be when their husband goes all filmy on you. She tried to forget the incident, consoling herself that she had just imagined it. "So don't you have office today? Are you training to be a kaamchor or something" she asked jokingly.
He laughed. She looked at him carefully. Something seemed different. His laughter no longer looked fake to her. He truly looked happy. She was quite tired of the fake smiles he often plastered on his face for her sake. Virat was back, she thought with a smile.
She reached out to ruffle his hair but paused midway to think about something that just occurred to her. Ruffling his hair was not exactly something romantic for them. She always used to do it and that too during the time when they had just met. She felt a pang of guilt when she realized that she hadn't done that since..Since he found out.
She felt a strange sense of loss. She had enjoyed being with him. He was a perfect friend for her. In one word, he was her partner .She missed all the fun times they used to have playing pranks on each other. That was just the beginning though. Soon enough they had joined forces and started attacking their unsuspecting family members.
She realized that defeating cancer not only meant living but living life happily. She had turned quiet and depressed thus bringing the people around her to the same state too. The living example was right in front of her. But thankfully he seemed to have gone back to normal. She looked at him, still smiling and looking at her upraised hand as if waiting for her to complete her action. She gladly moved her hand closer to him.
But with surprising swiftness he caught hold of her hand and brought it near his face. His pressed his lips on the top of her closed palm as she had often seen in movies. OK. She was ready to admit it. She blushed. Anyone would in such a situation.
"Virat..what..you.."She stammered. He grinned as if this was a perfectly normal thing for him to do. Weird..something weird was definitely going on today, Maanvi thought. Next, Virat bent down waiter style and said "It is time for you to have breakfast madam" Then he chuckled as if thinking of some inside joke.
That did it for Maanvi. She finally found a reason for all this weirdness. Virat Vadhera was playing a prank on her."You really think this is funny Virat? Acting all weird..And lovey dovey and stuff..Seriously partner you have brought shame not only to yourself but to me too" she sighed dramatically keeping a hand on her forehead.
"Joke?"he asked looking a bit confused. "Well as you wish bandarriya" he said.He got up from his kneeling position and looking amused, bent down and picked her up as if she were as light as a feather. Her carelessly tied hair came loose. She looked down, shocked, to see the empty bed which she had been occupying a few seconds ago. She closed her eyes expecting pain as the IV needle was still connected to her wrist. But the pain didn't come. Craning her neck above his shoulders she saw it lying near her bed disconnected.
Her heart fluttered due to new found hope. Did this mean that she wasn't sick anymore? She looked up at his calm face. The lines of worry on his forehead had gone for good. Was she enjoying this? The attention..this new and different Virat'.the fact that he was actually carrying her down for breakfast'
"Virat..mujhe neeche rakho..agar kisi ne dekh liya toh?" But even to her ears the protest seemed weak and terribly half-hearted. He acted as if he hadn't heard and maybe he actually hadn't. They were going down the stairs now which gave her a view of the dining table. Almost everyone was there. Dadaji was reading his newspaper, Viren jiju and Chachu were discussing some court case, Maa,Chachi and Swamini bua were talking about some family friend of theirs. Her di came out from the kitchen carrying a few plates followed by their chef. She was the first one to notice the two. Maanvi closed her eyes tightly expecting her sister's reaction to be firstly shock and later embarrassment. But she smiled and said "Mannu..you are awake.Aa jao.I have made your favorite pooris today"
Everyone looked at the two of them and smiled. There were two empty chairs at the dining table. Virat slowly placed her on one chair and sat down on the next one deliberately bringing it closer to her chair. With horror she realized that if he got any closer she would be sitting on his lap.
"Glad you decided to make an entry. Its 10:40 already"Dadaji commented looking at his watch. He didn't seem much angry and Maanvi thanked god for that. She was just about to reply but Virat cut her off. "Woh sorry Dadaji I was busy reading some case files last night so I slept at around two. Naturally I was late to wake up this morning" Dadaji grunted in approval. Virat winked at Maanvi who in turn beamed at him. This was the life. It suddenly occurred to her that she might be dreaming, but the desire to never wake up was very strong.
As if on cue she heard a loud clap of thunder and the lights went off. She heard everyone grumbling for their own reasons. She heard Dadaji order the servant to check what happened to the generator. She instinctively moved closer to Virat who put a protective arm around her.
Then the lights came back on. But there was something wrong. She was no longer near Virat. In fact she was standing near the stairs now and watching the whole family in front of her. Everything seemed normal except that somebody else had taken her place and nobody else seemed to notice. Virat had his arms around Maya. She watched as Maya snuggled closer to Virat even though the lights had come on. Maanvi suddenly had the urge to throw something heavy at her. The girl had no shame. What was she doing with her husband?
She looked around desperately at the family members trying to find some sign of discomfort but everyone seemed to be perfectly happy. Her di served another Poori to Maya forcing her to eat one more. She watched as her jiju leaned forward to talk to Maya about something. Maya laughed and Virat ruffled her hair apparently enjoying seeing her laugh. Maanvi's eyes filled with tears. How could he do this to her?
"Maanvi'are you alright?"She felt someone shake her. The voice seemed familiar too. Virat. She sat up realizing that she was still in bed. She hid her face with her hands and found her cheeks were wet with tears. Through the gap of fingers, she looked at him. Virat was sitting on the bed and looking at her with concern mirrored on his face."I think you were having a bad dream Maanvi. You were twisting and turning in your sleep. Are you alright?"
Wordlessly she hugged him, burying her tear streaked face into his chest. She wanted to be sure that he was there with her and that he wouldn't leave her for any Maya. She breathed in the scent of his cologne finally feeling a bit calm. Virat tensed but slowly reciprocated the hug. Whatever he said yesterday night did seem to have had some effect on her. She seemed scared. He tightened his arms around her wanting to tell her that if he could he would never let go.
"Virat" She said in a low voice.
"Hmm..?"He asked anxious to get some hint of what her nightmare was about.
"You are calling me Jaan from today"
