Chapter-5
He stood at the balcony of his hotel suite that provided him a panoramic view of the hill station. It was December but it was still to be covered in snow. If weather forecast were to be believed, seasonal snowfall wouldn't appear before ten days from today. However, the silence in the night and moist chilly winds of winter suggested something else.
Shravan stood with a hand holding the railing and the other holding an almost empty bottle of Brandy. He gulped down remains of the bottle in a go hoping that the hotness at his throat could lessen some in his heart.
Those seven days he'd spent after her separation had dried his eyes. After she went all he did was nothing more than settling in a corner, aloof from his surrounding. The only proof of him being alive was the continuous flow from his eyes like a never stopping rain. He used to remain motionless even if someone wiped out those tears. After a few days no one in the family could gather guts to see that state of him.
Before the seventh day after she'd left him, Shravan was clueless about why she did that to him. Perhaps he was at fault. His Sumo must have had a reason. On and on he revised their eleven years of friendship and then those four years of their blissful marriage but couldn't reach to his answer.
"Bhaiya ye dekhye! Sumo ke taraf se ye envelope aaya hai," Pushkar overexcitedly handed over to him a yellow envelope hoping that it was a key that could drag his Bhaiya out of depression. But for Shravan it was nothing more than his answers as he knew with the finality she'd left him, there wasn't going to be any return. He with gestures asked Pushkar to let him be alone.
The envelope contained a letter and some other legal papers from court. It read 'Mutual Divorce Petition'. The next papers had general instructions regarding 'Divorce Without Children and Without Assets'. A wry smile formed on his face legal instructions to a lawyer!
He set those papers aside to see what she had to say to him now.
Shravan,
Nanu ke saath humare ek rahne ki vajah bhi chali gayi.
Main apne life mein aage badna chati hu aur issi liye main tumhe aur iss seher ko hamesha ke liye chhord kar jaa rhi hu.
Maine jitne bhi din tumhare saath guzaare unn sab ke badale main iss duniya ke sari khushiyan thukra du.
Tum ek bahut hi achhe pati the aur usse bhi achhe dost.
Par shayad humare bech dosti se zayada kabhi kuch nhi rha.
Please mujhe ek yaad samjh kar bhool jana. Hamesha khush rhena.
Sumo.
Just four lines in explanation!
He smashed the paper in his fist and threw it away in a forceful manner.
In his childhood days, he used to be her best friend, but of a special kind of whom she couldn't even give an acknowledgement and when they were married, it wasn't love for her but an arrangement! But what were those days and nights they had spent together? Certainly an illusion that was created by her at her will to use him for accomplishing her dreams. He bent down to pick up the wrinkled paper piece from the ground. He looked at it and decided to keep it as a testimony of his failure and a reminder of his pain. He'll never become weak from now. Emotions couldn't play with him anymore.
He closed his eyes that were scrounging in agony and it brought back the memories of today's evening.
"Before you take back your seat Mr Malhotra, I wished you would congratulate me and my fiance on our engagement."
Shocked wasn't anything close to what he felt then. Time had brought him back to that phase.
His glare was fixed at Sumo.
Aditya came around her at possessively rested his arm on her waist.
"May I declare to Shimla that they should save the date for the decade's most beautiful wedding. Suman has finally said yes and all of you are invited. So are you Mr Malhotra. Your presence will be most awaited by both of us," he winked and raised her hand to reveal the bold 'A' in her wrist.
"Mehandi ka rang toh chhut jaata hai but my Suman wanted to be marked as mine for always."
Aditya whispered a thing into her ear to which some expressions broke into her face and she immediately hugged him tightly. Shravan breathed heavily into his constricted lungs and left them for the audience.
"Tumhe kaise pata chala ki main...?" she blushed.
"Darling I know you in every way: body, mind and soul. Mujhse kuch nhi chhupa sakti tum. Plus maine tumhare pregnancy reports dekh liye the."
"Cheater!"
"Excuse me! Woh sirf tumhare report nhi hain. Usme mera bhi barabari ka haq hai. Didn't the gynecologist inform you?"
She became red. He caressed her cheek lovingly.
"Main tumhe tumhari ankhon se bhi padh sakta houn."
Her eyes hadn't left his after she'd lifted them up to him the second time. The look on her face flashed him. Emotionless or emotion-logged? He couldn't decide. Her nose had become red and her lips quivered. He had a feeling that she wished to say something. It was as if she was begging him to take her away or that was a result of his longing for her. Was there guilt or some leftovers of their wrecked love? Neither he felt. It was something else entirely. But what?

"Tumhe pata tha na ki Shravan waha hoga? Bolo na bahut milne ka mann tha na apne ex-husband se? Woh toh achha hua ki main tha wahan par warna!" Aditya eyed her. Disgust covered him from top to bottom as he saw her still lost in that moment.
He carefully removed the hair strand on her eye and spoke in a deathly voice, "I assume you weren't aware of his coming more than I was. Aur haan mujhe chhord kar jaane ki sochna bhi mat. Nahi toh tum jaanti hin ki main kya kuch karne ko capable hu. Ab tak bahut se demos toh maine de hin deye hain."
She quickly nodded in denial, "trust me I didn't know. I haven't kept any contact with him since then. Please trust me."
A wicked smile formed on his face, "good girl."
