Shravan Malhotra sat on the couch in his room, his Rubik's cube in his hands, his thoughts elsewhere. Sleep was evading him and the reason again was Sumo. Something wasn't right, he knew. How could she who spoke to him normally over the phone, who hugged him so passionately behave in the exact oppposite manner today ? What a stark contrast ! What changed overnight ?
He started recollecting each event that happened in his mind. Sumo's expression had immediately changed when she saw Pushkar and his dad. She had moved away but thats not what was wrong. She didn't look embarassed, there was a trace of guilt on her face. Was she feeling guilty that he had dozed off while he was talking to her ?
May be, he thought, may be not.
Why had his dad offered to go with Sumo in the car ? Anyway it was Sumo who was driving. What difference did it make ? And what were they talking about. He closed his eyes. He pictured Sumo and his dad standing in front of Tiwari killa. Something didn't fit. They were not at ease with each other. His father was tensed, but why ? Sumo had found Shravan and he was ok. Shouldn't they both have been happy ? Another question haunted him, why was there no smile on Sumo's face reciprocating his smile, after all she had hugged him only minutes earlier.
"There is nothing more deceptive than an obvious fact." One of his favourite quotes from Sherlock Holmes came into his head. He wanted to rule out that possiblity. He knew his father would be awake, but he had to be really careful.
Ramnath was reading when he saw Shravan come into his room, completely relaxed.
"Shravan, tum is vakt ?"
"Aise hi paapa, aapse ek baat poochni thi"
"Bolo Shravan, kya baat hai ?"
"Aapse Sumo ne kal kuch kaha kya ?"
Ramnath's demeanor changed. In an instant the calmness gave away to a combination of worry and guilt, but he quickly composed himself.
"kis bare mein ?"
"Woh Naanu ki tabeeyat thodi kharab hai na, mujhe laga shayad aapko Sumo ne kal bataya hoga"
"Nahi to, main kal hi unse miloonga"
Shravan observed the relief on his father's face. Sherlock wasn't wrong after all !
He knew his father hadn't forgiven Suman, but would he go to this extent ? Shravan paced around in his room when he heard a knock. It was Adithya.
"Bro aapko ek khush khabari deni thi"
"Kya ?" Shravan said in an irritated tone. He knew for sure it was about Sumo.
"Sumo maan gayi PCT ke naye location ke liye"
"Yeh to bohout accha hua" Shravan said sarcastically.
"Bro, aap to Suman ke bohout acche dost ho na, kya aap meri help kar sakte ho ?"
This was what Shravan had been waiting for. This was the best way to know what was in Sumo's mind.
"Kya hai bolo ?"
"Woh ... maine us din aapse apne pyar ke bare mein kaha tha na woh"
"Woh Sumo hi hai... mujhe pata hai, tum yeh bolo ki mujhse chahte kya ho ?"
"Suman ki favourite restuarant kaunsa hai, mai use wahin le jana chahta hoon"
"Oh, itni si baat. Main tumhari reservation kar deta hoon, bolo kab ki karoon ? mere friend ki restuarant hai"
"Thankyou ! kal lunch ka soch raha hoon"
"Ho jayega, main address message karta hoon tumhe"
"Waise Bro, aap thode khadoos to ho, par dil ke to bohout acche ho"
"aur kuch ?" Shravan asked annoyed
"ok ok I get it ! Good night !"
At noon the next day, he went to Tiwari killa, knowing fully well that Sumo wouldnt be home.
"Maamiji, woh kal mera wallet main Sumo ke kamre mein bhol gaya. Sumo hai kya ?"
"Nahi beta, ek kaam karo, tum khudh hi jaake le lo."
"Teek hai Maamiji" he smiled
He loved her room, probably as much as she loved it. He started pretending that he was looking for his wallet, while he actually wanted was her laptop, there would be a clue in it, he was sure, but he saw tucked away in a corner, a small box, half open. What was Sumo looking at, he wondered and pulled it out. Shravan Malhotra was grinning. It was everything he had hoped for, infact more. Every memory, everything they shared was in it. He quickly picked a few things and put it back the way it was.
Just then Maami came in.
"Mila kya beta ?"
"Haan Maamiji, mil gaya" he said beaming with joy.
Back in his room,Shravan sat down on his couch again, picked the cube again and solved it in a minute.
"Game on Ms.Suman Tiwari" he said confidently !
