"How was your day bhai?" My brother Aniket asked as soon as I got back home.

"Abbe! What are you doing here?" I asked settling down.

"As if I need your permission to enter here! By the way mom sent kadi chawal eat!" He passed a box.

"Too bad. I ate so much already!" I shrugged.

"What? You ate out? Are you serious? What is gotten into you?" he exclaimed albeit dramatically.

"Yep. I had chicken koftas by the way. It was yum. You should try sometime too." I said.

"Wait did you went out with someone?" Ani asked all of a sudden.

"Yeah. I went out with Suman. She is a resident at the hospital" I said.

"What? You went out with a girl???" He looked at me wide eyed.

"What's wrong with that?" I said coolly.

"And did you say suman? Suman Tiwari?" He probed.

"Yeah!" I said curious of what he is going to say.

"Holy crap! She is Abhay's girlfriend. I mean she was! And why would you go out with her? That's like a date. Bro! I don't know I should be happy or sad" He said.

"So? What are you going on about?" I said.

"I mean I am glad you finally went out with a girl but out of all girls why suman? I heard she is notorious for breaking hearts. And you? I went mad dealing with you after you broke up with Anya the only girlfriend you ever had. BAD IDEA!" He kept talking.

"Cut it Ani. First of all she works with me that's it. I just met her today. It was'nt a date per say. Why go till dating? You are the one who is crazy" I said sipping on some beer and passed one to Ani.

"You met her today and went out with her? Wah! But she is hot is'nt she? I met her once when she was dating Abhay. She is charming.Wonder why she has such reputation" He said.

"Whatever why are we talking about her. So nosy you are" I diverted the topic.

"Common you just went out with her. She is THE topic" He said.

And there is no stopping for him. *Sigh*

Being a doctor is a meticulous task. First you put years of hardwork into it. It is a kind of profession which just does not concern yourself. You have skill to save people's life. Sounds too cool but it is burdensome. It's nice to see someone saved because of you but being a doctor you see people passing away too. Often when this happens, I end up thinking Was I responsible in any way? Had I done better would that person be alive? I feel helpless. Everytime I go operate on someone I go with a hope. A hope that the person can survive. It is the patient's battle to begin with. All I do is to support the person with my skills and knowhow. I want to support as much as my will allows me to. No matter how used you are to these scenarios, Someone's death is hard to ignore. It is sad. Everyone is fighting to live well in this world ultimately.

"May I come in doc?" Suman knocked on my door.

"Yeah!" I said.

"Did you eat?" She asked.

"Not yet." I replied. I could see she was down too.

"It is sad that he could not be saved. I really wished he made it." She sighed.

"That's life. Its unpredictable right? Are you okay?" I asked.

"No! He was telling me how badly he wanted to recover and take care of his family. He was so positive. I wished he made it." She said glumly. I could already notice it was a bit hard on her talking about this but I guess she wanted to talk it out to someone.

"I wish I had done better may be. I did not like seeing him die either. He was the first person who died while I was operating on." I said wanting to share my thoughts too.

"But you did all you could. I guess its destiny. Whatever it is, it is cruel" She said.

I sighed.

"Do you want to eat something?" She asked.

"No, I dont feel like.." I said.

"Common doc you must be hungry" She said.

"No, I am not" I said.

"Please eat something. Atleast give me company. I did not eat anything at all. All my friends already had lunch. Plus you need to eat to attend patients. You cannot be dull like this. It is unfair for them"She said.

"Hmm. Ok!" I smiled.

"That's great. Never say never for food. How else will you live. I cannot survive a minute wihout food." She said laughing.

It was a long and tiring day. It's atleast nice to have her by my side.
