I have been reading a lot of beautiful writings that you all are writing and that has inspired me to write one of mine. I did write a few for Airlines but this is my first one for EKDV. Please read and comment.
Her hands were clammy and her throat ran dry , she could feel those familiar rumblings in her tummy but to top it all she felt her bladder was full and she desperately needed to use the washroom even if she had to run back from the boarding queue. At the moment she felt angry but with whom she did not know, with herself or with him to make her still feel this way. Suman Tiwary had always been proud of the fact that she had always been able to get over things quickly and move on , but then why she the hell she was not able to move on from her Shravan!!Her Shravan where did that thought come from, Suman admonished herself as she looked at her flushed face staring back from the washroom mirror. She forced herself to concentrate on the work at hand, the reason why she was boarding the flight today. For the last 5 yrs Bangkok , the tourist capital of the world had been her home and she had been busy with so much happening at her work that she had hardly any time for herself but whenever she had , she always missed her family and Delhi and mostly him. She always had been a fighter and she never ran away from life's challenges and she had to admit that she has never been able to forget Shravan, the only person she ran away from. Who was she kidding, he had been a part of her and can somebody forget a part of oneself, a lone tear rolled down as Suman looked out of her window seat to the runway outside.
How could she forget the darkest day of her life in the summer of 2010 when she had lost everything and most importantly she had lost herself.. The friend who she had trusted with all of herself had fought case against her and managed to close down her catering service, she had forgiven him. He had refused to help her or talk to her she had forgiven him but when her Nanu was insulted it was the last nail in the coffin and the chapter of their friendship was closed forever. Since her parents passed away and she moved into her mother's marital abode, her Nanu had been her guiding spirit and when her Mama and Mami had tried to fix Suman's marriage, Nanu had read her eyes and she had to confess that she was in love with Shravan . Although Suman had been scared to discuss this topic with the Malhotra family but her Nanu did what was always right and he had decided to go ahead and approach Shravan and his family. Shravan's father had learnt his lawyer skills from her Nanu and he always respected him with every fiber but that day he proved that all of that was just a farce. Ramnath Malhotra had shown his true colors when it came to his son and had spewed venom like there was no tomorrow. Hurt her Nanu had come back and later that night he had a fatal attack which he could not survive. Suman's extended family had blamed her for everything and disowned her and she had spent the night on the terrace, the same place where she and Shravan had formed a new bond of trust a few months ago which lay in tatters now. Suman would have broken down completely had not the next morning a mail had come calling her for Bangkok. Suman had once participated in a cooking contest about 6months before and she had won the contest. Although there were lot of promises made but nothing happened so she had forgotten about it. The contest had been organized by Soujourn Group of Hotels and they had promised to provide some temporary working opportunities in their new hotels to the winners and if they performed well they would be absorbed. For the contest, Suman had prepared a Indo-Thai desert with lightly sweetened khowa, grated coconut and lots of mango lightly sauted and grated and decorated it with a sugar cage and owing to this recipe she had got a temporary internship with Soujourn group's new hotel in Bangkok as a junior chef. Suman had grabbed that opportunity with both hands and had flown to Bangkok as she felt that this was the only way to get away from the mess that she was in now. She knew very well that with her and her Nanu gone her extended family would sell their traditional home which had been her Nanu's world but she did not have the strength to handle all this now. As she left for her flight to Bangkok she had heard from a common friend that Shravan was getting married to Urvashi and something had broken inside her that very moment and she had just sat numb in her flight.
Suman had struggled to forget everything, she had gone off all social media, friends everybody but he haunted her and so she did what she was best at cook, cook and cook. She remained busy in her kitchen world busy innovating trying various herbs, spices and various other ingredients, fruits, vegetables, exquisite raw materials and this world fascinated her. Drawn by her zeal the Sous-chef had become her mentor and the old man had taught her all the tricks of the trade and Suman's training in food and nutrition had helped her rise the ranks and soon she was not only confirmed but a well known name in the hotel. Sometimes people would explicitly ask for her to prepare something special especially during some special even like wedding, engagement .Suman smiled at the irony of it , the person who had run away because love had snatched everything from her was now called to make something to commemorate somebody else love. Her inspiration remained her Nanu who taught her never to give up and she was determined not to let her fate rule her. Today her Nanu would have been very proud of her , she was the Head Sous-Chef at the hotel and she had been asked to come to India as the South-East & India conference was being held in Delhi and lot of state dignitaries were visiting and some of them were to be put up in Soujourn Group Delhi branch. The Soujourn Group had pooled its best chefs to churn their best culinary creations for the VIPs. Suman chided herself for being so childish, she was going to India for a few days and soon she will be back in her safe haven in Bangkok and Delhi was a big city, so why in the world would she collide with Shravan but she was actually in a conflict of minds-one side said she wanted to see him the other side said to avoid him and his thoughts. Once she landed in Delhi time flew like anything and she did not even have time to eat as the entire kitchen was buzzing with activity, chefs running around, waiters shouting orders, raw materials being stacked, security checks happening, machines buzzing and by the end of the 4th day when the dignitaries had left Suman found herself exhausted to the hilt. She just wanted to pamper herself in a spa and cleanse herself thoroughly of all the dirt and grim that had accumulated in the last couple of days so as to make herself presentable and then probably pay a short visit to her extended family before she leaves.
God meanwhile had smiled at her and was busy writing a different destiny for her this time. Pushkar Malhotra was having his morning cup of coffee as he went through the newspaper and as he was flipping through the pages, a very familiar face looked back at him. He tried to take a closer look and he realized with a shock, he could identify this face in a million people. There was an article on signature dishes prepared during this conference and one of the famous food bloggers had written about them. One of the outstanding dishes was of Suman Tiwary and her picture was next to the picture of the dish. Pushkar knew what he had to do now and he set out on his agenda without even wasting a second. He could not miss this chance his brother could have at his happiness. His beloved bhaiyya had suffered a lot at the hands of his manipulating father and Pushkar's mother and he wanted to correct it once for all and give him his life , his Sumo and this time he would ensure nobody dares come in between them. Suman had just turned up at the hotel lobby all set to call a cab to set out to meet her family when a very familiar figure stepped out of another car and it took a millisecond for her to recognize that it was none other than Pushkar.
Hours passed by as Pushkar had heard Sumo's side of the story, her pain, her hurt , her leaving everything behind ..rather her Shravan behind..he finally decided to tell Shravan's side of the story. After Sumo had left, although Shravan had tried to put up a strong face infront of everybody but Pushkar clearly had seen through the faade. He had seen his restlessness, his sleepless nights, his viewing his & Sumo's photos for hours together. One day accidentally Shravan had heard Ramnath and Kamini talk and he had completely broken down that day when he came to know that his own father, his world had manipulated him so badly and trampled his chance at happiness and life. He came to know how his father had insulted Nanu in his absence and manipulated him and Suman to ensure they are separated. He had walked out of everything that day, the Malhotra house, the Malhotra firm and most importantly out of Ramnath Malhotra's life. Now he is a nomad who goes around villages and fights cases for the poor who have no one to fight for them. The only person who he has remained in touch with is Pushkar and the only photograph that is on his desk is of Suman. Pushkar had packed his mother's luggage and sent her to her parent's place outraged at the catastrophe she had caused and Ramnath was a broken man now and he barely walks out of his room. Pushkar explained that he does not feel sorry for anybody in his family but Shravan who has suffered the most. He sat on Suman's knees begging her forgiveness and requesting her to save Shravan's life but that was not necessary since Suman was now looking mortified on hearing about Shravan. About two hours later Suman was at the doorstep of a small house in a village which seems to hardly showing any signs of modern India .She hesitated but once urged by Pushkar she knocked lightly on the door while her heart seemed to be galloping inside her chest. After knocking twice the door opened and there stood Shravan..time stood still for both of them as they saw each others reflection in their eyes with a hint of moisteness. Pushkar came behind Sumo breaking their stance and urging Suman inside. He then explained how they both met and how she was here and quickly left of the pretext of some work so the lovebirds could catch up.
Suman noticed he looked so pale, he seemed to have lost weight too and there were dark circles around his eyes and the glitter in his eyes was gone. She looked at the house with wires hanging , walls showing years of no repair, water deposits in the corners where the roof joined the wall and the room was in itself quite damp. The furniture was bare minimum with some basic kitchen stuff in one end of the room , a cot , a small table fan and a study table and a lamp. She just could not understand how and why Shravan left the luxurious life he led in the Malhotra mansion and moved here. Shravan observed her and said "Life is no more beautiful and no more worth being so I am just spending my days on earth so nothing matters now". Suman was numbed by the fact that Shravan showed so much abhorrence to life, the person who had always been so full of life and she could not stop herself anymore and rushed to him and cried into his chest, clutching him by his waist .Both of them cried their heart out and they did not know for how long they just stood there holding each other as if nothing mattered but they just being with each other. As Suman raised her head ,Shravan opened his mouth to say something but Suman stopped him from saying by placing her finger on his lips and said "I love you Shravan and I cannot live without you and nothing else matters", saying this she crashed her lips kissing him as if there was no tomorrow. Shravan was initially shocked but soon he joined in and poured all his love into the kiss. The kiss was nothing passionate but filled with a sense of longing and when they broke to breathe, Shravan cupped Suman's face in his hands and said "I love you Sumo and always have for years now". Suman smiled and said "I know" and they held each other close looking at the spreading color of twilight silently promising each other to herald new beginnings on a new day.
