Chapter One
July 7, Lecture One - Psychology
Suman was so engrossed in Professor Madan's interpretation of the brain and the mysteries involved in discovering its working that even Preeti's low grunts (of being highly disinterested) seemed inaudible. One hour and a half just zooped past, and she was shocked at the clock when the break was announced.
The Loud Bell rang again.
"This is music to my ears. Ah! The Bell.", squeaked Preeti. And Suman just laughed at the changing times. It was she who complained of it a few hours back. And now it had turned 'music' for her.
"Talking of Music", began Preeti followed by a low "Not again" by Suman, "The auditions for the Band and Theatre Arts Council has started. Wanna give it a try?"
"Am afraid that I'm least interested in Co Curricular.", said Suman, rather coldly.
"Oh common! Don't be a spoil sport"
But Suman gave her a look and left the place. She was still wondering how, when and why did she get stuck to this chattering disaster called Preeti, when she bumped into someone.
"Ohh, sorry!", apologised Suman.
"Its alright dear, but just mind your way"
She was a teacher, it seemed. Around 5.5" tall, glowing complexion and a beautiful pair of glasses resting on a large pair of eyes, Suman couldn't believe that a teacher could be so friendly. At her school back then, teachers were cold, stubborn and rude to students.
"Maybe that's why Xaviers is the best", she thoughtfully smiled.
"Hey! Hey!" ,Came Preeti, running behind. "You saw her? She's the one who is taking the auditions! Nirmala Ma'am."
Nirmala -- meaning soft and sweet. And that's how exactly she was! But wait, she wasn't interested in Theatre, right? So why bother?
Suman made a dull face as she realised she was getting carried away by a mindless freak.
"So, did you change your mind?"
"I stick to what I'd said -- No Theatre for me, get it?"
"Okay", said a less energetic Preeti. "But why are you so cold, always?"
"Maybe because I don't like you", she said flatly.
Finally, she had said it. Preeti type people were exactly the category of students she completely disliked.
Suman roamed round the school campus rather aimlessly. She liked staying alone for sometime, specially when people like Preeti were present, back in the Class.
After exactly thirty minutes from the end of the Psychology Class, the Bell rang. It was time for the next lecture. Students rushed to their classes in groups, chattering and getting ready. But it seemed that Suman Tiwari had lost her way through the corridors.
She had funnily strayed away from the classroom and she found herself in an unknown corridor.
"Right, Left no Straight...Ahh! Where had she come from?"
It was quite dark there. And to worsen things, it had begun to rain - first a drizzle and then a heavy pour. It was all damp. And she was hell scared. It was her first day and she was late to her second class. Most importantly, she was Lost.
"Damn it!", cursed Suman.
"Sssuuummmaaannn", came a distant echoing voice. "Suman Tiwari..."
Her senses alert, she sprinted in the direction of the voice.
A few more steps and she saw a shadow, a huge one around the next corner.
She ran across the next corridor to find no one. She was more scared than before as the shadow had just disappeared.
Suddenly, a cold hand tapped on her shoulder and Suman let out a deafening shriek.
"Bbbaaahhh!!!!!!!"
"Geekks!", screamed Preeti. "You'll have me deaf one day"
But Suman seemed so relieved to spot a familiar face.
"Let's go!", Preeti grabbed her hand and they rushed through various steps and turns to stand in front of their class.
Suman gulped. The lecture had begun almost half an hour back.
The two of them gingerly cracked open the door.
"Um, may we come in , Sir?", Suman barely managed to utter.
"YOU TWO", Said the Professor, rather cross. His small eyes were sharply narrowed at them and Suman was more scared than ever. Maybe she was going to receive a detention letter or even a suspension?
"Well done, Ms. Tiwari! Thrown out on Day One, eh?", she thought.
The Professor moved towards them and her heartbeat raced rapidly.
"You two are late! Get out!", he barked.
Suman slowly opened her half shut eyes.
"Was it over?", she thought.
Preeti held her hand and dragged her out.
Suman heavily sat down outside, on a bench. The corridor was perfectly empty -- a pin drop silence prevailed.
"Hey! Its OK!", cheered up Preeti, as cool as ever.
Suman just recalled that Preeti had saved her, brought her to her class and was out for no apparent fault of her own.
"I'm... I'm sorry!", said Suman.
"Oh! Forget it. We're friends, right?"
But Suman recalled those harsh words she'd spoken a few minutes back.
"No, I should be. I told you that, that I didn't like you and you found me. Plus you're getting punished..."
"Don't bother much. Besides, I'm here for my own selfish reasons. A good cause to officially bunk the Economics Lecture. Couldn't be better for me", she winked.
Not much had happened through this, but Suman had definetly found out a liking for the girl beside her.
