Chapter Six

"Achchi baat hai Suman ki tumne Shravan ko rokliya hai. Shravan ko phone dena." It was Priya Aunty , Suman's mom at the other end.

Suman gave the phone to Shravan asking him to speak. Clearing his voice, he began, "Namaste Aunty!"

Priya: Shravan, you're forgetting something...

Shravan: Sorry, Priya. Main bhulgaya ki aapko Aunty bulana achcha nahin lagtha.

Priya: Now that's better. Meri beti vaise bhi samay seh pehle buddi hogayi hai, par main ab bhi jawan hoon, at least thinking main.

Shravan: I know! Dekhthe hi pata chaltha hai!

Priya: Suman kya chali gayi tumne toh yahan aana hi bhulgaya. Kabhi tumhe tumhari tournaments seh fursat mile toh aajaana. Bahut din hogaye hain tumse milkar. Main tumhari favourite dishes banaungi.

Shravan: I really miss all those pleasant times we had, Priya! Specially aapki haath ka jaadu!

Priya: Theek hai main phone rakthi hoon. Apna aur Sumo ka khayal rakhna!

Shravan always felt very good talking to Suman's mummy, Priya. Though she had been the headmistress of a very posh school in the place where both he and Suman studied, she was very cool in her behavior. She was the one who had given him his first job as a part-time table tennis instructor when Sumo told her about the dire straits he was in financially. They hit it off very well right from the beginning. The thing both of them enjoyed the most was pulling Sumo's legs. They played all sorts of pranks and practical jokes on her.

She was so unlike her husband Mr. Virendra Tiwari who was engrossed in books and accounts his whole time. Apart from that, he was the busiest and the best Chartered Accountant in the entire city. Not even a deficit of five rupees among crores and crores escaped his notice. Sumo had inherited a lot of his tendencies like her silent, introvert nature and her difficulty in opening up; her studious and methodical ways; her knack for business and entrepreneurship; her tremendous memory power in keeping each and every small thing and memory, both pleasant and unpleasant intact in her mind,; her difficulty in letting go of things which hurt her or voicing out her displeasure in words; her tendency of keeping on forgiving the other person and allowing them to take her for granted till the point when she could take no more.

You could almost say that looking at him and Sumo together was like looking at a younger version of Priya Aunty and Virendra Uncle. There were many times he had marveled about how these opposites had made such a good and successful marriage. Now he understood how they made such a good pair and the truth behind the adage, "Opposites Attract". Sometimes you look for all those aspects in your companion that you don't have, so as to complete and complement you.

Shravan still remembered the day when he was sitting all lost and forlorn after the altercation he had with Sumo. He just could not make sense of what was happening within him. Was he the same cool and carefree Shravan who had reacted like this when his friend told him that she was going to complete her remaining course of study abroad? Why did it make such a difference to him? Had he started relying so much on her? After all these advances in computers and electronics, the world was really becoming a small place. They could remain in touch as she said. That was when he was accosted by Purna.

Purna: Sumo told me everything. How rude and disgusting you were to her when she came to tell you that she was going to continue the rest of her studies in America. So finally I think you must have realized why I rejected you and chose someone else as my life partner.

Shravan: You here?

Purna: God haven't you realized even now that you had loved Sumo all along?

Shravan: Sumo is just the bestest friend I've ever had without whom I cannot conceive living even a single day. But that's it!

Purna: When friends go away, you definitely miss them. But if you cannot conceive living your life without that person, then understand that your relationship with that person has gone beyond friendship. You feel like that only for the love of your life, your soul mate!

Shravan: Now I get it! That's why you rejected me, is it?

Purna: Yes, buddhu! What you felt for me was plain attraction and infatuation but I could very well make out that what you felt for Sumo ran much deeper than that. Sumo was my best friend since childhood. There was none closer than me to her. Or so I thought. But ever since you came into her life, it was just you and her. Both of you kept me apart from your most personal and private space where it was just the both of you. Entry was forbidden even for a dear childhood friend like me. I became an outsider and third person even there. How could I come in between both of you even though you were chump enough not to realize your true feelings for each other? Neither do I deserve somebody like you who belongs body and soul to my best friend, nor do you deserve me as you were made to belong to Sumo, and only Sumo.

Shravan: No, that's not true...Me and Sumo...how is it even possible?

Purna: Now you are in the phase of denial, so you will find it difficult to accept the truth. But you will gradually realize that some friendships are not destined to remain as friendships. They blossom into something very beautiful and deeper than ordinary friendship. You find a soul-to-soul connection in them. Yours and Sumo's friendship is just like that. Both of your lives are entwined. Your very existence depends upon the other. I just hope you apologize and make it up to Sumo before she goes away from here. Only then both of you will be happy in your respective lives. Otherwise both of you will end up leading incomplete and unfulfilled lives despite having everything else in life.

As both Suman and Shravan walked together into the flat and Sumo locked the door behind her, Shravan turned back and stopped. Sumo quizzed, "Why are you standing there? Come inside. If you're thinking what you are going to say to Ramnath Uncle, then let me assure you that Uncle will also think as I do. He would have no problems with your staying back with me till the situation comes under control. Safety comes first!"

Of course, Shravan knew that his father would have no problems with his staying behind with Sumo. To tell the truth he literally doted over her like his own daughter. Sumo was everything he had ever wanted in him but never found in him, a loving, dutiful, methodical and responsible daughter. It was he who had an issue.

Shravan cleared his voice and said, "If you want me to stay with you, then we have to talk about the past and all the unresolved issues between us. You told me just a short while ago to move on with my life and forget everything. The next instant you literally force me to stay with you. What do I make out of all this? I know what I want in my life but I hardly know what you want out of life and me. You keep contradicting yourself. Unless both of us discuss all the said and unsaid things and feelings we have for each other, we cannot make a new beginning in life."

Sumo knew that this was coming her way. Now all that remained was to brace herself for it. Shravan was right this time. Running away from the past or ignoring it was no way of dealing with it. She could very well see that both of them were still stuck up where they were two years ago. Their past needed a definite closure.
