Chapter Five
Suman got down and said, "Thank you! So you're leaving today?"
Shravan, his dejection and disappointment speaking through his eyes and the tone of his voice, "Haan! My flight is at eight!"
Suman, not knowing what else to tell, "There's still a lot of time! Please come in and have some coffee!"
Shravan: Don't bother about the formalities! I'm leaving, Sumo!
Suman (in a cracked voice, her face tearing up a bit): Good bye!
Shravan was about to start the car and leave when he noticed Sumo's phone which started ringing just then! She was slowly walking towards the gate looking back at him every now and then. He called out, "Sumo, ruk jao!" She excitedly turned back and came running towards him. Without speaking anything, he gestured that she had left her phone in his car. He held it out to her.
Both their hands got interlocked with each other while she was taking the phone from him. It was still ringing but both of them seemed so oblivious even to that. Neither did he want to leave her hand nor did she want to let go of his. By now even the phone had stopped ringing. Both of them came back from the flight of their fancy. She took the phone and was about to turn back and leave but she stopped back and cleared her throat to say what she wanted. Suman was a bit hesitant on how to begin but there was no way she could let him go away like that without telling anything,
"Shravan, zindagi main har kisiki ek talash hoti hai aur ek mukaam, aur us mukaam tak sath denewala ek sathi ki zarurath! Hum donon ka bhi kabhi ek kahani aur ek safar huva kartha tha. Par ab woh kahani katam hochuki hai! Isliye tere us safar aur us kahani seh dur jane main hi hum donon ki balayi hai! Tum samajraheho na main kya kehneki kosish kar rahi hoon? Teri khushi ke liye apni zindagi main aage badjao aur mujhe bhul jao!"
(Shravan, in life, everybody has a quest and a destination, and needs a companion who will stay with them till that destination. Both of us also had a story and a journey together in the past. But that story is now over. So the best interests of both of us lie in your going away from that journey and story. I hope you understand what I am trying to tell you? For the sake of your own happiness, move on in life and forget me!)
Shravan a bit ironically and sardonically,
"Galathiya mujhseh hui, bahut, aur tumse bhi, thodi. Par meri zindagi main kya hoga usse main khud decide karunga. Main kisse bhulunga aur kisse yaad rakhunga, yeh meri marzi hai! Sorry, Sumo! Agar tum meri zindagi ke faislon main kuch kehna chahthi ho, ya kuch mujh seh ummeed rakhthi ho, toh tumhe meri zindagi ka hissa banna padega. Tabhi main tumhe woh adhikar desaktha hoon! Agar nahin toh, tum mere age badne ke baren main ya peeche rukne ke baren main kuch nahin bol sakthi! Bye!"
(I made mistakes, a lot of them; you made some too, though a little. But I will decide what will happen in my life. Whom I will forget and whom I will remember is my choice! Sorry, Sumo! If you want to say something about the decisions I make in my life, or you expect something out of me; you have to become a part of my life for that. Only then I can give you that authority over me! Otherwise, you cannot talk anything about my moving on in life or remaining behind in the past! Bye!)
She knew how he felt about her and yet she wanted him to move on from her. She was literally impossible! Being blind was one thing and pretending to be blind and unseeing was another thing. He was not going to let anybody come in between their shared memories. Not even Sumo herself!
Shravan started the car as he continued looking at her through the side mirror. The tears were falling from her eyes. He wanted to stop the car and immediately go to her and wipe them away. But he knew that he had to go. If he stopped one more time, he would never be able to leave her and go!
Her phone started ringing again. She turned aside to speak and the next moment when he saw her, she was running towards him loudly shouting and waving her hands as though she wanted to stop him. He applied the sudden brakes as she came running and literally panting for breath. He got down from his car, still clueless about what was happening.
Suman came up to him and took his hand in hers and said, "Andar chalo mere sath, chup chap! Two big hotels and shopping malls in the state have been attacked by terrorists. A few have been killed and many badly wounded. Some of those terrorists have escaped and the search is still on for them. A terrorist red alert has been announced at all the airports and people have been advised not to go to crowded areas till the situation comes under control."
Shravan: So? Usse tumhe kya farak padtha hai. Tum adar jao aur flat main raho. Main jaraha hoon!
Suman: Pagal math bano Shravan! What the hell do you mean by SO? Mujhe farak padtha hai! Tum bhi andar aarahe ho mere sath ya main yahi tere car ke samne baithnewali hoon jab tak tum andar nahin aathe ho. (Don't be mad! What the hell do you mean by SO? I care! You are also coming inside with me or else I am going to sit right in front of your car till you come in with me.)
Shravan was just not able to believe his ears that she had just now said something like "Mujhe farak padtha hai" out of her mouth. She caught hold of his hand and pulled him inside. Though he could have fought it if he wanted, he just did not have the will to fight her after what he heard from her. Say what she may, but she still cared for him as much as she did in the past. Period!
PS: I wrote a few big dialogues in Hindi, but as Hindi is not my mother tongue, I don't know if I made sense of what I wanted the characters to say. So I have given the English translation in brackets. Hope all of you liked this update as well. Leave your comments and likes below. I love hearing from my readers.
