From what I know Kalyavan's father wanted an immortal son and hence prayued to shiva who gave him a boon that his son could not be killed in war or something like that. Kalyavan's mom was Rambha, if I am not mistaken. Hence, the only way to kill him was without using weapons and in a place where there was no war. Hence, Krishna did what he had to destroy Kalyavan.
