Chapter 1
NEIL
As Zubin went down the staircase leading into the reception area of the only decent hotel they could find themselves on the outskirts of the bustling town of Srinagar, Uttarakhand, he spied his former boss wearing the hotel carpet thin with his nervous pacing.
5 years of pent up emotions had come to the surface, when he received that phone call from Neil. He had not understood then, why Neil asked him to come along with him on this journey, but after yesterday night's happenings, he knew exactly why Neil could have wanted his changu-mangu around. While Mangu aka Kritika had stayed back with Sam making sure, she didn't know what Neil was upto, Changu had taken off with Neil thinking he was on yet another of his mad searches for that which could not be found.
On receiving Neil's call, Zubin had thought that he'd go with him one last time and use the opportunity to give his ex boss a piece of his mind. Neil needed to stop these mindless search sorties of his. Sometimes being optimistic about something could become a nightmare for other people, as it had become for Sam.
Every time Neil thought he had found a clue on where Chashni could have disappeared to, he raked in all kinds of emotions for a whole lot of them. All the feelings that were long stashed in deep dark places by everyone who was emotionally invested in damning Radhika for marrying Arjun in the way that she had, were ruthlessly brought up to the surface, to scorch and gnaw, at already bruised and battered hearts.
Neil's obsessive belief that his Chashni was alive and kicking in some part of the world, was taking a toll on all of them, but especially on Sam. It was this incessant obsession of Neil that had driven most of them away from Bird Song. However Sam could not go anywhere and she bore most of the brunt when Neil took off on his trips to nowhere in particular. It was not the fact that he went on these trips that bothered Sam, it was when he came back with a lost look in his eyes that she could not handle. She died a little more every time Neil came back unsuccessful in his quest.
So much had happened in the last 5 years, that it would take the sheen off of most people, but after yesterday Zubin was thankful that Neil had not given up, not even after that blazing row between him and Arjun a year back, which had finally cut the cord between three people who'd gone through a hell that no one should ever go through.
Thinking back though, Zubin could now understand why Neil obsessed about finding Chashni more than any of the others would. Neil's obsession had even surpassed Arjun's mad love for Radhika. Everytime he got even a faint inkling of something that could lead to Chashni, he would stop everything he was doing and go after the clue as if a demon was after him. Take for instance this mad chase in the mountains now... a chase that meant hotfooting to this Himalayan town all the way from Mumbai on lookout for a children's book author, who Neil was convinced was his Chashni.
SAM-ARJ
Neil had not been as happy ever as he was today. The sense of elation that coursed through him and rendered him alive for the first time ever in 5 years had had him tossing and turning in the smelly bed all night, awaiting the crack of dawn. He knew that his joy would be complete only when he shared the news with Arjun.
He had not even told anything to Sam yet. He believed that before Sam, Arjun had a right on this news. And so he had patiently waited for his watch to ring the alarm in at 10:30 am. But small towns and their mobile networks had done him in, not to mention the irritating secretary in the DIDE India Delhi HQ who refused to put his call through to Arjun.
Of all the days, it looked like the whole ad agency was in some important meeting since 9:30 am and the secretary who had never heard of Neil Malhotra, was not giving him the time of the day even after he had used all the arguments and excuses in his vast repertoire. He didn't really care how important this meeting was, he was only hell bent on getting through to Arjun, and if that meant he kept rattling at the DIDE telephone lines, then so be it!
Just as he turned away from the reception desk, he spied Zubin coming down the stairs... and his face broke into a dazzling smile.
"You look good, Boss!" said Zubin, while returning the smile.
They both knew why this smile that they exchanged was so special. It was a smile of KNOWING. A knowing that was finally going to free many people from the nightmare that allowed them to exist. But not to live life, the way it should be lived. It was a knowing that had freed Neil and Zubin yesterday, and now it would free Piyali and Samrat, Mala Aunty and Dilip Uncle, Sam and Arjun... but most of all Sam and Arjun!
That fatal day five years ago had finally united Samaira Khanna and Arjun Mehra in a way that nobody involved in the Arjun Radhika marriage drama ever thought possible.
In an instant Radhika had taken the supposed knife Samaira thought she was carrying around in her back, and plunged it through and through her heart, inflicting a wound that lay bare open and festered into an ugly oozing lesion every time Sam thought of her own cruelty and disloyalty towards a friend who had only ever loved her time and again.
In the same moment, Arjun who had taken his sister's quest to extreme ends at the cost of his innocent love, had borne the consequences of living somebody else's revenge.
For five years Samaira and Arjun had been united.
United in their grief.
Over Radhika.
RADHIKA
Arjun was twiddling his fingers and playing with the plastic pen in extreme impatience.
"What the hell was the woman doing?" thought Arjun.
After insisting that she could handle the presentation all by herself, she was all but making a hash out of it. The client had been giving Arjun confused looks for the past twenty minutes. After all Rahul Khetan who was the publishing director at Conde Nast India Pvt. Ltd, had come to DIDE India with their advertising account on Arjun's behest.
The power point running on the projection system behind Anantika De, the daughter of DIDE India's head honcho Divyankar De, was the only saving grace at the moment. Anantika was no novice at the advertising game, so her behaviour at the helm was very puzzling for him. In his opinion, if he side tracked the boss's daughter and gave the presentation himself, he could be committing professional hara-kiri. He was only 8 months old in this office. In fact he was only 8 months old on the Delhi Advertising Circuit. If he had to stay put in this city, he needed to tread carefully.
And he was determined to stay put.
He knew for sure that he could never go back to Mumbai again. Mumbai was synonymous for him with pain, loss, anguish, betrayal, torment and brokenness of spirit.
The impassioned fight he had had with Neil a year back in Bird Song's reception over Neil's relentless optimism on the whereabouts of Radhika, prompted him to break the bond he had developed with Sam and move out of the city. He could not take it anymore. It was not that he had accepted that Radhika was lost to all of them, but the fact that he could not see Sam go through yet another hell everytime Neil came back from his search sorties, with no concrete results.
With Radhika gone, the truth about their marriage was out in the open for everyone to see, since the past 5 years. The one thing that Radhika had managed to do for Arjun, even in her disappearance, was give him freedom from all his misdeeds. All those who should have hated him, for what he did at Nandini Di's behest actually didn't ever say a thing to him. It was the classic case of "people who live in glass houses should not throw a stone at the passer by's"
Nobody dared, because everybody was guilty of having thought the worst of Radhika.
And so he'd left Mumbai after 4 years of just existing and finally moved to another city with better prospects. Mala Maa had been after him for years to shift closer to Rishikesh, closer to the spirit of Radhika, and when he did, for the first time he felt good. He felt closer to his Radhika, away from all that grimness.
As he thought about Radhika, his unseen gaze sharpened on Anantika De and his face softened in a smile at the memory of Radhika's many antics during client presentations at Bird Song. In the one year that he'd shifted from Mumbai he had decided that if he truly wanted to dedicate his life to the memory of his lost wife, he needed to be more like her. Always seeing the good in people, always smiling and always being the light in everybody's darkness.
And in the past 8 months he had realised that this practice, brought him a new lease of life. As everyday passed by, he felt even more closer to his love and at peace with himself. More often now, he felt like he was close to a breakthrough.
Something good was going to happen soon.
Something that had a 'Radhika' about it.
He just knew it.

And I really wish you could sell this script to swastik!!!
I have this question, when did Radhika leave? Was it after the washroom incident or as we have seen in the show? So Arjun gave up ,but Neil didn't.. Shows the unspoken bond Neil and Radhika had.. The story is kind of shrouded in mystery..
