Chapter 3 (END)

Arjun drove as fast as he could. The baby was coming!!! He ran inside, as fast as he could. The receptionist looked up at him puzzled. "Mrs. Radhika Arjun Mehra" he said, in between his breaths. The middle aged receptionist asked him to take a seat. He saw a doctor walking towards him. The look on the doctor's face made his blood drown from his face. "D-Do-Doctor, is R-Radhika ok?" he stammered. The middle aged doctor sighed. "It seems, we can't have a normal delivery. We tried, but she lost a lot of blood, and" he couldn't finish. Arjun squeezed his arms in desperation. "Is she going to be ok?! Tell me! What can I do to help her! Save her! Please!!!" he was pleading. The doctor patted Arjun's shoulder and said "son, we'll try our best. Right now, all we can say is that I don't think we should undergo normal delivery, so please, be patient. Pray to GOD son. HE WILL LISTEN. Don't loose hope" he smiled. "Do anything. I don't care, just please bring her back to me" he said. He then let go of the doctor's shoulders and sat down. The doctor patted his back and said "don't loose hope son. She'll come back if you keep your faith intact in GOD."

Arjun saw the nurses pulling Radhika out. He immediately ran to her. She looked exhausted. "Arjun" she whispered. He grabbed her hand and pleaded "please don't leave me. Please. be alright." She laughed! She laughed, in a situation like this! "Mr. Mehra, I'll come back, with the baby. I promise" she said before closing her eyes. He had to let go of her hand. He looked at his hands, and suddenly started to shake. He was crying. All these years of holding back. Holding back his pain when his parents had left him, holding back when he had to stomp on his heart for the sake of Nandini, holding back when he tried to hurt Sam, holding back when he almost lost Radhika, and holding back when life became too much for him. He finally cried his heart out. "Please. Come back" he pleaded.

"Radhika! Radhika!" Radhika could hear his voice, calling out to her, "please come back" he said. She couldn't give up, she promised she would never let him get engulfed by darkness ever again. "I have to fight" she thought. She needed to come back, that too with the baby. Arjun needed her, he would be damaged beyond repair if anything happened to her or the baby. She had to fight. She had to. Her eyelids felt heavier and she drifted off to a deep slumber.

Arjun sat near the operation theatre, his eyes looking out in the distance. He was exhausted, but he didn't care. He didn't notice Sam and Neil rushing in and Sam crying out in the distance. He didn't notice when Neil sat down beside him and buried his face in his hands, or when he started to sob uncontrollably. He didn't bother consoling them when they pleaded and prayed to bring Radhika back. Why does fate always do this him? Why take away the things which mean more to him than his own life? Her condition worsened. This was not ok! She and baby were in danger. They didn't deserve it. Not at all. Arjun could imagine his fate sneering at him, laughing at his condition. All his insecurities, that he tried hard to push away: the fear of losing Radhika, the fear of losing the baby were finally creeping up on him, engulfing him entirely. He was barely holding on. He never believed he deserved happiness and right now he was thinking just the same. He could feel darkness consuming him again.

Flashback

"Look at me" Radhika said as she placed her hands around Arjun's face, making him look at her. "It's going to be alright, you'll be an amazing dad" she finished. Arjun smiled hesitantly at her and then Radhika said "I know you're scared Arjun, and so am I." Arjun placed his hands on Radhika's face. He brought her face closer to him and placed his forehead on hers . He didn't say anything and neither did she, no words were necessary. Radhika gently rubbed his back and said "You'll be the best dad. This baby will love you and think of you as a hero." Arjun hugged her. He really needed it now, she needed this now. "We'll be ok, you'll see" she said and then pulled away. "After all" she continued, "we're both survivors, and this one will be as well" she finished and smiled.

Arjun suddenly looked up, and thought about the doctor's words "Have faith in GOD." He looked at the door saying "Operation Theatre." "Have faith in GOD" he told himself. "Faith? Would you bring her back to me if I have faith in you? Are you sure? You are snickering up there right? You are laughing" he said, his eyes watered up again. He never knew he could cry this much. "Ok, I'll try. I'll give it a try. For Radhika and our child" he muttered. "I'll ask for forgiveness from you. So, dear LORD. Forgive me."

"GOD, please keep my Radhika safe". He kept chanting over and over again. "I know, I had lost trust in you. GOD, please bring her back to me, give me a chance to be my best version. Radhika, this baby, they mean everything to me. Please keep them with me" he finished.

It has been over 3 hours now and Arjun was out of breath. He looked at his watch. When was the last time he had food? It didn't matter. He totally ignored Neil and Sam when they urged him to go home, freshen up and let them take care of the situation.

Almost 5 hours later, the doctor came outside and smiled at Arjun. Arjun looked up at him, hope glinting in his eyes. The doctor placed the baby in his hands and congratulated him. When he asked about Radhika, he said "mamma's ok, don't worry dad. She's sleeping. I'll call you when she's awake." Arjun smiled at him, suddenly tearing up. The aged doctor patted on his head and said, smiling "get some sleep boy, the storm's over" and left. He looked at the baby. His daughter. This was really their baby. It was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen in his life. He smiled at it and kissed its forehead. Sam and Neil came, more like rushed to them. Neil sat beside Arjun, grinning at the baby. "Hi there buddy, uncle Neil's here." He took the baby from Arjun's arms and kissed it. Sam's tears spilled as she took the baby from Neil, "hi there, aunt Sam's here and you are going to be our princess" she said and kissed it as well.The doctor came soon enough to take his daughter back into the cabin as Radhika was awake. Arjun stood up and walked towards Radhika's cabin. "Radhika will be ok" he said to himself.

He went inside and saw her lying on the hospital bed. His heart was thumping loudly. He went near the crib where his baby, their baby was sleeping peacefully. "Hey there" he said and smiled. He tickled its soft cheeks. "Daddy's here, and he promises to keep you and mamma safe" he finished. He went near Radhika's bed and sat down beside her. She was already awake, and smiled at Arjun when he sat beside her bed. "Hey" she said. He smiled softly at her and replied "hey." He took her hand in his and placed it on his heart. He nuzzled into her neck, then buried his nose in her hair, taking in her scent. He wanted make sure she was really there and he wasn't just dreaming. She softly stroked his hair and kissed his head. He pulled away and looked at her, his eyes speaking a thousand words he is not voicing out loud. A doctor came in. He smiled at the new parents and congratulated them once again. He placed the baby in Radhika's hands on hearing it crying. Radhika cradled their daughter in her arms and said "shh, don't cry little one, mommy and daddy are here." Arjun smiled and placed an arm around Radhika, the other one around Radhika's arms holding their daughter. His family, was right before his eyes, in his arms, and they were safe. He was more than happy. He was grateful to GOD, for keeping his family intact. He had his faith restored.

*I wrote this story to show Arjun's journey towards his restoration of faith. I tried to show that life is never easy. It's a trial every single moment and when it involves someone we love, it becomes harder for us. I am sucker for happy endings. I never planned to kill Radhika in the first place. However, from Arjun's perspective, it was unknown, Radhika's life was always on the line and Arjun couldn't help but fear every single moment.
