He turns back, stares at Samrat in surprise, his eyes asking, "are you sure sir?" He replies with a sense of calmness he does not feel, "yes sir." Radhika looks around the room and says, "it is quite late. I need to go to. Neil will you..." Samrat interrupts, "Arjun will drop you on his way home." Looks at Arjun and says, "I hope you don't mind." Shaking his head, from side to side, Arjun replies, "no sir."







Parking outside her home, Arjun stares broodingly at the empty street, waiting for Radhika to get out of the car. Smiling politely, Radhika says, "thank you. Goodnight," as she opens the car door to let herself out. Placing his hand on her, to stop her from leaving, as he stares out ahead into the street, he says, "I am sorry for not believing you. On di's behalf, I apologise. She was being overprotective. I don't think she thought it through, nor did she expect such consequences. I will make it right to you." Radhika smiles warmly and says, "but you did believe me." Arjun turns and stares at her, shocked to the core as he realises the truth in her words, that he did indeed believe her over his sister. Resting her palm over his heart, she continues, oblivious to his inner turmoil, "you may have been skeptical, but deep down in your heart you did believe me." Arjun's gaze follows her hand movement as he stares at the hand resting over his heart, suddenly scared for the barrier called Sam no longer existed between them.

Sam walks into the house quietly behind Neil, lost in thought. Seeing her parents interacting with warmth and concern, she grabs Neil's hand, stopping him. Placing a finger on her lips, gesturing him to not make a sound, she whispers, "when did you last see my parents interact so warmly... So lovingly...
Supportive." Neil looks back at them then at Sam and replies, "I can't recall." Smiling Sam says, "who could imagine that my broken wedding would have such an upside..." Adds teasingly, "maybe we should be thanking nandini di and Arjun." Frowning, Neil crosses his arms across his chest and says angrily, "you sense of humor knows no bounds. Everything is a joke for you."


Frowning over his harsh words, Sam retorts, "what! Do you expect me to cry away because Arjun turned out to be a SOB! I am angry. How dare he play me!" She stops, stares at her parents, looks at Neil and says, "what did dad mean when he said that nandini was using me to get to dad? Why would she and Arjun want to hurt me? I have never met them before." Shrugging his shoulders, Neil replies, "I don't know." taking a step towards her parents with the intention to ask. Neil stops her by saying, "I don't think now is the right time. They have enough on their plate. Ask another day." "True. I shall just ask Arjun directly. I wonder what he and dad discussed," she says.

Pouring coffee into two cups, radhika smiles as Arjun walks towards her. She says, "satisfied, sir." He nods, taking the drink offered. They sit by the small dining table in amicable silence, sipping their coffee. Watching him with a speculative gaze, radhika says, "sir, what nandini Di said is bothering me." Taking a deep breathe, Arjun sighs, thinking, "here we go again." He sips his coffee, waiting to see what she is going to say next. Radhika continues, "why does she think you love me?" Not waiting for his reply, she continues, "she is mistaken. Just because I convinced you to change your mind does not mean that you love me." Putting his cup down, "Radhika, Di is not here. as sound as your argument is, who are you trying to convince."


Smiling Radhika replies, "I am not trying to convince anyone. I know what I know." Curious, Arjun asks, "what do you know?" Cheekily, she says, "I know that the reason you wanted to back out was not because I convinced you, because you have fallen in love with Sam and no longer want to hurt her. Admit it. Di was mistaken." Slamming his coffee mug on the table angrily, Arjun stands up, saying, " I do not love your precious Sam. Nor do I care a whit about her," then storms out of the house.

Startled by his angry outburst, radhika races after him, calling out, "Sir. Sir stop. Stop." Ignoring her he races down the stairs. Eventually catching up to him on the stairs, arms outstretched, she blocks his path. Confused, she asks, "why are you so angry?" Glaring at her, annoyed that she is so obtuse, he snaps, "get out of my way Radhika." Not one I cower down, radhika retorts, "I won't. What is bothering you?"


Pulling her into his arms, trapping her as he locks his arms around her waist, he asks furiously, "why do you care? I just broke your best friend's heart... Why do you care?" Startled by the sudden nearness and confused, she replies simply, "saral... The fire...you were there for me. You cared. Why question when I care?" "I don't want your sympathy nor you empathy," he retorts. "I thought we were friends," Radhika says, continues, "talk to me sir. You don't have to carry your burdens alone. You can share." pulling her closer, mere inches apart, he whispers into her ear, "what would you like to know?" Shivering as his lips graze her skin, radhika remains mum. Smiling, Arjun whispers teasingly, "cat got your tongue." Seeing desire awaken in her eyes, he is so tempted to kiss her... To stop the teasing... To explain to her in action what she can't seem to grasp. Finding her voice, radhika says, "you need to step back. I... I..." Seeing confusion enter her eyes, Arjun steps away and says huskily, "it's called sexual awareness." "What," Radhika exclaims. His gaze filled with affection, he elaborates, "my nearness disturbs you. This feeling is called sexual awareness." "In other words," he adds smugly, "you are attracted to me... As I am to you." Smiling, he adds lazily, "I hope this answers a lot of the questions you have been asking tonight."

Blushing, radhika just stares at Arjun, denial on her lips, but unable to voice it. Gruffly, she says, "goodnight" and races up the stairs.

Sitting in the car, Arjun shuts his eyes, basking in the memory of holding radhika so close... Oh how he wanted to kiss her... Cursing himself for choosing not to. Ever since he had spoken to samrat sir, he felt light. With giddy excitement he thinks, "I am free. I can live my life. i can't believe Di broke the marriage alliance. She knew deep down how I felt. She has always stood by me." Happy, he races home.

Chapter 3

Samrat walks up to the group, he could see that they were all emotionally drained. Seeing Sam hugging her mother tight as she caresses her hair, he stops, smiles as he takes a mental photograph. Their close bond reminding him that this too was achieved because of Radhika. his gaze on Radhika as he walks up to the group who were oblivious of his presence. He frowns, thinking, "I owe her... I owe her big time."

Placing his hand on Radhika's head, he says with concern, "Arjun mentioned your grandfather is fighting for his life." Startled by the contact, the concern, Radhika tears up, nodding in answer. Taking a deep breath, she adds in a rush, "Arjun sir has arranged for dadaji to be shifted to a hospital here. The services are better. Mum has gone back to Hrishikesh to close the house. The family will be here in a day or two." She looks to Sam apologetically, deep down well aware that the person who has turned out to be her messiah, is her culprit.

Reading the apology in Radhika's eyes, Sam smiles, saying, "what! You expect me to scream bloody murder, because Arjun helped you." Radhika quickly interrupts, "he doesn't love me. Nandini Di is wrong. I just kept hounding him to change his mind. I kept reasoning with him. If he changed his mind, it was only because I made sense... Not because... " Radhika stops midsentence, having an epiphany, she says with a twinkle in her eyes, a smile on her face, excitement in her voice, "Sam! What if Arjun was backing out because he has fallen in love with you and wants to repropose with the correct intention."

Everybody stares at her... Their expressions priceless, laughing, Sam says, "only my chasni can think that." Patting her cheek, Sam says, "did I hit you that hard that your brains have flipped." Rubbing her cheek, Radhika gives Sam a mischievous look and says, "you know what! I owe you one." Sam shrieks, and starts backing away, saying, "don't you dare."

Neil, Samrat and Piyali watch Radhika chase Sam around the room admist laughter... Relieved, Piyali and Samrat share a glance filled with hope, believing that their daughter will eventually recover from this heartache.

Arjun walks into the room admist laughter. He stops at the entrance, staring at the beautiful picture created in front of him. Leaning against the door frame, he loses himself in Radhika's smiles and laughter as he watches her chase Sam. His heart melting for he never thought he would see her smile, hear her laugh this soon. Samrat and Neil both notice the soft look on Arjun's face... One looks on with amusement while the other with anger.

Lost in Radhika, Arjun is not able to block the punch that hits him square on the jaw... "Ooof," he gasps out and he falls on to the floor. Looks up to see an angry Neil above him while Sam and Radhika try to pull him away. Sam hugs Neil, clasping her hands around his neck as she uses her body to push him away while Radhika, rushes to Arjun, asking him, "are you okay?" Arjun stares into Radhika's eyes, reading concern, slowly nodding, yes. Samrat and Piyali quickly rush over, scolding Neil for resorting to violence. Refusing a helping hand, Arjun stands up on his own accord, glares at Neil, jaw clenching, turns to Samrat and says, "goodnight sir."

Needing to get away before he loses control of his anger, Arjun strides across the room towards the main entrance. Hearing Sam call out his name, he stop, takes a deep breath and turns. Sam looks at him coldly and says, "thank you for assisting Radhika and her family. We will take over from here." Clenching his fists, nostrils flaring he stares at Sam angrily, instead he forces himself to keep calm and nods. Realisation hits him that now he would have no reason to interact with Radhika... His gaze seeks hers, drinking away her beauty, all the while thinking, "I will never see her again." He turns to leave, dejected, lost, suddenly life had no purpose... when Samrat calls out, "son, I shall see you at the office tomorrow. It is a working day."

Wiping her tears, she tries to smile, saying, "Neil, what would I do without you?" Giving her an affectionate look, he replies, "you don't need to hide your pain from chasni." Shaking her head, Sam replies, "chasni has so much to deal with... The fire... Her dadaji. She has done so much for me already. I do not want to burnden her more." Hesitating fractionally, Sam gathers some courage and asks Neil, "do you think what Nandini Di said is true?" Knowing what she was referring to, but hoping to avoid answering, Neil shrugs, saying, "the woman is mental." He turns to head back into the house when Sam grabs his hand. She waits for him to turn towards her, then she asks, "do you think Arjun loves chasni?" Not knowing what to Sam, Neil hesitates at first, then lies, "no. I don't think so."

Sam stands there, shocked, fresh tears falling as she watches Neil walk back into the house, she whispers, "you never were a good lier."

Arjun and Radhika travel in silence, neither sure of what to say. Radhika suddenly turns towards Arjun and says, "how could your Di think you love me? Just because..." Gritting his teeth, Arjun interrupts, "I don't want to discuss it Radhika!" Annoyed, Radhika replies, "I don't care what you want... I want to discuss it. My gosh, how hurt must Sam be!" Stopping the car on the side of the road, Arjun turns to her and roars, "Sam. Sam. Sam... Not everything revolves around her." Startled by his outburst, Radhika stares at him... Suddenly nervous as she senses how coiled he was. It was like any moment now he would release himself and attack... He was wound up tight...Mentally picturing a panther spring an attack on its prey, Radhika shudders, thinking, "shit... There is only me here." Placing her finger on her lips, he says with false calmness, "not another word Radhika or I swear to God I shall find another way to shut you up."
