Jinxed onscreen but lucky off-screen!

In an industry where many lead actresses fail to bag a major role after their show winds up, fortune has favoured Barkha Bisht. Last seen in Star's Pyaar Ke Do Naam, Ek Radha Ek Sham, this vivacious gal is now the protagonist Anupama in Sahara One's Doli Saja Ke.

"I guess I am very lucky. For my debut vehicle, MTV's Kitne Mast Hain Zindagi, Balaji tested 21000 candidates out of which I was selected. Later, I bagged a lead role in Star's Pyar Ke…..Even for Doli… there was immense competition but I got through," Barkha says with a smile.

How does it feel playing this new role?

"Though I don't really identify with Anupama's character, it's quite a challenge to play a manhoos (jinxed) girl. But I suppose being on the sets for 18 hours a day and 20 days a month, the character grows onto you. And of course Aroonaji has been a great support," voices Barkha

To ready herself for the role, Barkha has been busy watching the old flick Anupama starring Sharmila Tagore in it. "I am trying to adopt Sharmilaji's closed body language in Doli….

It's not the first time that this actor has a meaty part to play. "In my previous show Pyar Ke….I have essayed three different characters: a chulbuli (bubbly) village belle, a serious doctor and a politician's daughter, as the story was about re-incarnations," says Barkha.

Blessed with a tall frame and hour glass figure, Barkha has just opted out of Popkorn News on Zoom. "I just couldn't cope up; in fact I fainted on the sets of both the shows. Though, that doesn't mean I shy away from hard work. I got to know the reality during my first show itself when for a two minute scene I had to shoot for two hours. Sometimes it gets stressful but when you look at yourself on the small screen I feel it's all worth it," adds Barkha.

Not many know that before slipping into an actor's shoes Bisht has worked with GE Capital for more than four years as a voice trainer. "My dad never approved of me acting, but the bug had bitten me. I grew up watching TV soaps and was very impressed with the way the industry was shaping up. So, I had made up my mind that I wanted to be a part of it."

So, after Tellywood is she eyeing the big screen?

"Never really have I thought of doing films as the casting couch worries me. In fact, that's one of a major impediment. But I am sure there are nice people in the film industry too," Barkha signs of on that optimistic note.

Acting is a distressing job: Barkha Bisht

A simple dusky girl Barkha Bisht appears to be on cloud nine after grabbing a role of the lead protagonist in Arooni Irani's 'Doli Saja Ke…'

But having been troubled by health problems owing to over work, Barkha is now also ready to compromise on her anchoring and is thinking to quit Popcorn News for the new assignment. We recently caught up with her and in a brief tte--tte, the actress tells us how happy she is and describes her present assignment, future plans. Here is the excerpt.

Q: How did you get into acting?
A: Actually, since my childhood I wanted to become a television actor, but as my dad is in the Army and he never took acting seriously. So I started working in a call center as a voice trainer for four years.

Then there was an All-India Talent Hunt by Balaji and MTV and I got selected. My first serial was Kitni Mast Hai Zindagi on MTV and from there my journey in television started.

Q: You have been doing both anchoring as well as acting. Which do you feel is a tough one?
A: Yes, I am doing both. I anchor a show called Popcorn News on Zoom TV and also act in daily shows. Actually anchoring is a bit easy job, as one has to be more of oneself. But acting is not easy and it is also a distressed job.

Acting in even a two-minute scene takes two hours and so we need to work 18-20 hours a day. Again talking about money factor, I definitely earn more in daily soaps than from anchoring.

Q: So, how do you manage both?
A: Actually, it has started getting hectic now. Doing a daily show with anchoring is not at all a cakewalk, as it almost consumes my whole day. So it has started affecting my health too. Like a few days ago, I fainted on sets of both Popcorn and Doli Saja Ke due to over work.

Q: So, how are going to cope up with the fainting spells?
A: I have realized that health is very important. So I need to take care of myself too and I am planning to quit Popcorn News as doing a daily with anchoring is getting tough for me now.

Q: Any plans for venturing into Bollywood?
A: No, not actually. I never had an eagerness to get into movies. Maybe the casting couch is one of the reasons, but there are good people too. Other than that I am happy with television as I had always dreamed of becoming an television actor and not a Bollywood actor. But if I get a very good role I might think of acting in movies too. - (SAMPURN)

Hearty chat with Barkha Bisht

Barkha faints, not once but twice!

BT speaks to Barkha Bisht about cutting down on work, career choices and actor-boyfriend Indraniel Sengupta.

DEEPALI DHINGRA

Till a few days back, the doeeyed Barkha Bisht was busy shooting for two shows, Popkorn News and the newly launched Babul Ki Bitiya Chali Doli Sajake. But Barkha had to quit working for Popkorn News as the girl fainted on the sets of not one but both the shows because she was overworked! "This was around 10-12 days back and I was literally doing back to back shifts to accomodate both the shows," admits Barkha. So she had to quit the show as she couldn't carry on like that. "That's the only reason I left, otherwise I was thoroughly enjoying anchoring," she smiles.
In her new serial, Barkha plays Anupama, a girl who has been brought up to think that she's unlucky, as her mother had died during childbirth. "She just wants to make her father love her as he doesn't even look at her," she explains about her character. But considering that most of the lead women on-screen are suppressed, what's new about this show? "I agree but most of these women are fighters who stand up for themselves. Anupama on the other hand, is not a strong person at all," Barkha says. The actress is all praises for producer Aroona Irani. "I have worked with female producers earlier but it's the first time that I'm working with a producer who's also an actress. As an actress, she guides us through our performances," she adds.

On the personal front, things are going great between Barkha and Indraniel Sengupta. "He's extremely supportive of my work," gushes Barkha about the man in her life. So can we hear wedding bells soon? "Marriage is not really in my scheme of things at the moment. We both are extremely busy with our careers and need some time," she says. Barkha admits that her parents are insisting on her getting married but at the moment, her priority is her career. "Maybe a year more and then I'll think about it," she smiles.

Love Lorn
Ashish Mitra

From Mehendi Tere Naam Ki to Vaidehi, Aroona Irani has come a long way. Vaidehi might have ended midway, but Aroona isn't really disheartened. In a chat with Screen, she talks about Babul Ki Bitiya Chali Doli Saja Ke, her latest show that is being aired on Sahara One.

he concept of Babul Ki Bitiya... was there in my mind since I was a child. The story of Anupama starring Sharmila Tagore had moved me greatly. Believe me, whenever I used to be free, scenes of Anupama came to my mind and used to haunt me. To me the story is relevant even today. The sight of the girl (Anupama) being ill-treated by her father just because her birth coincided with the death of her mother was mindboggling and whenever I saw a girl being beaten up by her parents, I used to go in a flashback and remember the scenes from the film concerned," reminisces Aroona Irani who is producing Doli Saja Ke for SaharaOne. She however clarifies, "Though the concept of Babul Ki Bitiya Chali Doli Saja Ke is a lift from Anupama in particular, I had to add a lot of masala to make it look like a contemporary story." She however confesses, "I have taken only two characters of the film that of the father and the daughter (Anuj Saxena and Barkha Bisht) and weaved the story of my show." To a question as to how did she zero in on Barkha Bisht to play the central character of Anupama, Aroona says, " I had seen her earlier in a particular show and was impressed by her. I called her one day to my office and when she came, I made up my mind to cast her as Anupama because she looked like the character I had in mind." Anuj Saxena plays the father's role. But hasn't he quit the show? Is she looking for any replacement? "He was the first choice for the show and we had already signed him but since the show got delayed by six months, Anuj is a little skeptical. However, we are doing our best to keep him in the team," informs the actor-producer. Talking about her last serial Vaidehi, Aroona quips, "It was a very nice experience but I think people are not yet ready for that kind of show. They couldn't digest the issue of male impotency. If the audience doesn't like to watch such shows, it is useless to keep them going. After all it is the TRPs that count." But is she happy with the response she got from Sony? "I have no complaints against the channel. On the contrary they made it a daily show. But yes, the late night 11.00 pm timing was wrong. It goes without saying that while going to bed, people prefer light entertainment and not the rona dhonas of a family."

We had heard that Babul Ki Bitiya...was slated for its premiere in December 2006, but the serial is now set to go on air. " Well, all this is not in our hands. Actually Sahara wanted around one and a half month's time for the promotion of Ghar Ek Sapna, which was lined up before my show. Since this is the general practise for every show, I agreed. The same time-period for promotion was applied for my show as well."

Why haven't you cast Sangeeta Ghosh, a regular in your serials for a long time, we ask. Aroona replies laughingly, " We still share a strong bonding. She is a great professional and more than that, a great human being. Once after seeing her in one of my serials, Yashji (Chopra) called me up and praised her a lot. When I told her this, she had tears in her eyes. You are definitely going to see her in one of my upcoming serials."

When we remind Aroona that after Des Mein Nikla Hoga Chand that was a big hit, none of her other serials have repeated that success, she smiles, "Sholay and Mother India cannot be made again, and the same applies to my shows too. But on my part, I always put my 100 per cent in all my shows." Besides being a producer, Aroona is also acting in it too. But doesn't it seem too hard to manage acting in Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki and also look after the production? "There is nothing to manage, as I have to give only seven days in month to Kahani...", Aroona quips. To a question if she was contemplating directing a serial, she says, "Nothing now."

Are there any plans for films? "Definitely. If the chance comes, yes. At present I want to be with my TV audiences. I can't predict the future but this doesn't mean that I am not open to do films. Anyway I haven't been acting in films since the last seven years."

In the ever growing world of television, the daily soaps have grabbed most of the time slots and have become an indispensable part of television.....but with the growing popularity of television, actors are now facing acute problems in working.....one of the most talked about and now being a normal problem is related to health but this leads to other issues like the one faced by Barkha Bisht...

After playing a lead role in 'Pyaar Ke Do Naam Ek Radha Ek Shyam', she also started hosting a show 'Pokcorn News' on Zoom TV, which gained her more popularity but after fainting on sets of both 'Popkorn' and her new upcoming show 'Doli Saja Ke' she finally is thinking of quitting 'Popkorn' due to her shooting timings and hectic schedule for 'Doli'. "I fainted on the sets of 'Popkorn' first and then when I went to 'Doli's' set I fainted there also. So then I realized that I need to take care of my health too as health is very important. So I am thinking of quitting my anchoring on 'Popkorn News' as the schedule becomes too hectic after signing 'Doli.....' as it is a daily show......," sadly uttered Barkha Bisht.

Of course after getting an offer to play a lead protagonist, that too in a show produced by Arooni Irani, it would be an easy decision for an actor to quit an anchoring show like 'Popkorn...'
