Aruna Irani's new show for Sahara's Doli Saja Ke was supposed to go on air in Jaunary but failed to show up because of financial problems. Due to the delay Anuj Saxena who was playing father to Barkha Bisht in the show decided to quit the serial. Anuj shot for only 15 episodes and Irani replaced him with Jas Arora. However, now that Doli will soon be aired, Irani needed to shoot the show's promo. So she asked Anuj to spare a few days for the promo shots which he refused. But Irani insisted he do the job so Anuj was left with little choice.
What's common between Ektaa and Anuj?
Wonder what's common between producer Ektaa Kapoor and actor turned producer Anuj Saxena? Well, the two may not be the greatest of friends but they seem to have a striking similarity in their nature. Both are ambitious and nurse an attitude to excel. They live life on their own terms and are known to be firm believers in God. The serial 'Kkusum' was a milestone in both their careers. Astonishingly, they haven't worked together after that. Since both dabble in producing films and television software, let's wait and watch if they cross each other's paths.

MOVE ON: Anuj Saxena

Anuj's got production on his mind

His debut production Kulvaddhu might have flopped but Anuj Saxena is unnerved. In fact, the actor prefers not to dwell on it. And as per acting on the small screen is concerned, Anuj says that he's planning to pay more attention to production now. But if a great role comes his way, then he'll definitely give it a thought.

MOVE ON: Anuj Saxena
Yeh serial kal ho na ho

Well, that's what is happening with the serials these days. BT talks to the hapless actors who are left in the lurch when their serial is suddenly taken off air

ITI SHREE MISRA

In the recent past, a number of television serials have been taken off air abruptly much to the chagrin of the viewers and the actors involved. Aisa Des Hai Mera, Kulvaddhu, Vaidehi, Kabhi To Nazar Milao, Sati, Antariksh, Milee etc are just a few of the serials which didn't even get a decent ending!
Pallavi Kulkarni, although an established actress, had to face this problem when her serial Vaidehi was scrapped all of a sudden. Says Pallavi, "It's very disheartening. You start off with a new project and decide to give it your best shot and suddenly it all goes kaput. We gradually start getting into a character and when the serial is suddenly taken off air, it leaves you feeling very incomplete. But thankfully, I have my commercials to fall back on."
Pallavi's co-actor in Vaidehi, Sachin Sharma has the dubious distinction of having most of his serials taken off-air. Sindoor, Vaidehi, Kulvaddhu, etc are some of his serials that were scrapped unceremoniously. Says Sachin, "It is very demoralising. On a personal front, it one which met the same fate in spite of a formidable cast comprising Urvashi Dholakia and Anuj Saxena. Its lead actress Sampada Vaze was launched with lots of hype, but now she's cooling her heels at home. "Thankfully I got married in time! But a serial's abrupt ending does affect the actors adversely. It is unfair both to the actors and the viewers. Both feel let down. If the channels and production houses work in tandem, these things can be avoided."
Actor Daljeet Kaur's launch for her debut serial Kulvdaddhu had left a trail of envious girls. But it was these very girls who had the last laugh as
Kulvaddhu crashed within five months
of its launch. Says Daljeet who is yet to recover from the shock, "It's upsetting because now I have to go looking for work again. I have to start my career from scratch."
No wonder then that we see the same set of faces in every second serial, because the actors want to make hay while the sun shines. Because nobody knows yeh serial kal ho na ho! leads to feelings of insecurity and disappointment. On the professional level, it leads to a place where we don't know what next? In the end it's all about money. If the serial is not getting decent TRPs, they just take the show off-air without realising how badly it affects the cast and crew of the serial, besides of course, the viewers. By God's grace I have been getting offers from other production houses but not every one is so lucky." A point that must be noted.
Actress Saumya Tandon who made her debut with Aisa Des Hai Mera, too had the same problem. "ADHM was taken offair quite unceremoniously. It is not fair to suddenly pull out a serial. Channels must give some time to the serial to establish itself. Thankfully my serial stayed long enough to fetch me good offers," says Saumya.
The serial Rishton Ki Dorr is another

From small screen actors to producers
What's prompting more and more TV actors to float their production houses — creativity or big bucks?

ROSHNI K OLIVERA Times News Network
Their acting assignments may be keeping them very busy, but TV actors would like to expand their horizons in the field. More and more TV stars are floating their own production houses. But they don't want to restrict themselves to just serials. They are also producing plays and even movies. Recent times have seen Anuj Saxena, Smriti Iraani, Amarr Upadhyay, Pooja Ghai, Manasi and Rohit Roy, Urvashi Dholakia, Tanaaz Lal start their production companies. "It's exciting and feels great to have some some kind of power," says Amarr Upadhyay, who's firm is looking to make serials, feature films and short films. Creative satisfaction is the reason prompting actors to take the plunge. The current television scenario, where everything's mechanical and monotonous, gives actors no scope to offer their creative inputs. As Amarr says, "It can get very boring when a TV actor continues to play a character for many years. It's a natural progression to get into production. In my case, there's creative satisfaction here because I am involved in every department."
For Urvashi Dholakia floating her own company was something she had in mind since a very young age. "I was always clear I didn't want to restrict myself to just acting. There's so much more to do," says Urvashi, who's chalking out big plans for her company.

While some of the actors take up plum tailor-made roles in their own ventures, others prefer keeping away from acting in their home production so as to be able to focus on various other aspects. However, managing your own production house is no mean feat; the pressures are immense. Neena Gupta, who produced some successful shows on TV, has given up donning the hat of a producerdirector and prefers to stick to acting.
Actor Anuj Saxena recently experienced a setback when his first TV show Kulvaddhu went off air in less than three months. Of course, that hasn't deterred him. "This is not the end of the world! Just because one show goes off air does not mean that my company closes shop," says Anuj, who's now busy with making a movie, another serial and an international collaboration is in the offing too.

Balancing their acting commitments and their home production is never easy. For instance Smriti Iraani, who's now busy with her own shows, has had to give up on Ekta Kapoor's
Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi
owing to time constraints.

Pooja Ghai too has cut down on her acting assignments as have some others. But this new set of entrepreneurs are determined to make a mark. So does Ekta have a tip or two for them?

Aruna's Doli finally ready to roll !

We've been hearing about Aruna Irani's new show Doli Saja Ke Rakhna for a long time now. Well, after a set of teething problems, the plucky producer is now finally ready to roll out the show in the coming week.

This time around its not a passionate love story (Des Mein Nikla Hoga Chand) or a strong lead protagonist (Vaidehi); but Doli is a story of this young manhoos girl Anupama whose birth unfortunately coincides with the death of her mother Kiran.

In a freewheeling conversation, Aruna Irani tells us all that went into the making of this show.

We've been hearing about Doli..for a long time now; what took you so long to launch the show?
We were fine tuning Doli.. in very many ways. Even the channel wanted some changes and along the way even we made some changes. By then, the other shows were ready and they launched before us. Then we were asked to wait for sometime.

But the buzz goes the you were struggling with a lot of production and casting problems. Like Anuj Saxena left the show midway?
Anuj has not actually left the show. We're still talking to him. Even if he leaves, its no big deal because even Mihir left Kyunki but then the show went on for seven years na.So, this keeps on happening in the TV industry. So many artists leave so many shows for various reasons; some fall ill, some take another shows but then life goes on.

You had pinned down Jas Arora as the replacement but even he has walked out?
Jas came on the sets and the next moment he said that he wasn't comfortable with the role. He felt a bit funny essaying a father's role since he still walks on the ramp. I think, initially he thought he could do it. I told him if you're not comfortable you'll make me more uncomfortable. We didn't even shoot anything with him.

But don't you think he was the wrong choice in the first place. I don't think viewers can accept him as Barkha Bisht's father.
Well, everybody wanted him and even the channel. He has a very pleasant face so we thought it will work well with the character of Vikramjeet Kapoor.
.
Didn't you look at other older actors in the market?
As I see in the market now the trend is that actors' in their 40s should essay a father's role and 50 plus are the dadajis.

We've seen very strong women characters in all your serials, but this time around do we also see a strong male character?
Womencentric soaps work well with our audiences'. I believe women are our real audiences'. Men don't have the time to watch television and the moment they come home they all sit with their glasses and tell their wives 'are bandh karo tumhara rona dhona'.

Tell is a little about how you conceived the show?
When I was a child I watched this movie Sujata almost eight times. The film had a very powerful theme and that's when I thought if it worked on me, it will also work with others. The film had a scheduled caste girl who was jinxed from day one.
Here my lead protagonist Anupama is considered to be manhoos and how her father ill treats her. There was another film called Anupama which was on similar lines. So, we've taken these two strong characters and given it a tadka with our own masala.

But normally everybody denies it and you're actually saying this..
This is what happens and everybody does that. There's nothing wrong in being inspired by a show as there are just seven basic stories in the universe.

Your show is in the 10 pm timeslot and that's when you're being seen in Ekta's Kahaani Ghar Ghar ki?
Mera kya hain.. I am just an actress in Kahaani and it's a cameo role. I have a commitment with them for a few more episodes. I am confident about this.

It's very difficult nowadays to find a new lead protagonist. Why did you cast Barkha as the lead?
I met a lot of girls but nothing clicked. After an audition, I called Barkha to my office. And when I met her,I thought she looked a lot like Nutanji. Very ordinary to look at, dressed in simple clothes, and she's a kind of girl, if you shout at her then she won't react too strongly.

Aren't you casting Sangeeta Ghosh again in any of your serials?
I would love to cast her but then Sangeeta has a very strong and dominating personality. She's a sex symbol now. She doesn't fit in this role and if you remember her in Muskaan where she played a handicapped girl but with a strong mind of her own.

What are your ambitions as a producer?
I want to keep doing what I am doing but in a small way. I enjoy and pass my time. Now, even with one show I land up working sixteen hours a day. I don't think I can work more than this.

What about your film career?
The last film which I did was Haseena maan jahegi.
Now, I haven't done a single film for more than seven years. Even producers don't approach me. Also, the industy has changed so there's really nobody I can just call up and ask for a role.

Viewers would love to see you in a negative role.
Even I want to do that as I am fed of crying. Every artist has this khujli of acting . and that doesn't go with any kind of lotion. So, as an artist I always want to act in all of my serials.

Are you unhappy the way Vaidehi was handled by Sony?
I think, no comments on this.

Aren't you looking at any more genres?
Every few years one sees newer trends in the industry. I don't know how to make reality shows otherwise I would've tried my hand at it. What is important in today's market is to get a winner show. It doesn't matter how you get it by changing actors, scripts, or by a generation leap.

Des mein Nikla Hoga Chand.. was a passionate, sexy and a good looking show. Viewers are waiting for more of that?
I don't know how the show worked but now people don't want to see all that. If viewers don't want to see such stuff then how can I make it. After 39 episodes we were given a notice because viewers were objecting to all the sexy scenes in the show..

Sulakshana Khatri robbed!
By: Shaheen Parkar
April 25, 2007
Bach gaye! Sulakshana Khatri in Doli Saja Ke
Telly actress Sulakshana Khatri was attacked and robbed by an unidentified intruder at her Oshiwara flat in the wee hours of Sunday morning.

The thief entered her sixth-floor home at Vallabh apartment in Sejal Park with the help of a rope dangling from the terrace. What's worse is that the actress was alone at home during the incident.

During a scuffle with the thief, Sulakshana suffered several bruises on her body for which she needed medical attention. "It was a planned attack as the thief had made an opening in the grill of the kitchen window through which he slipped in," says the actress.

Co-operative co-star

Sulakshana, who plays character roles on TV, has been shooting for Aroona Irani's Doli Saja Ke, slated to air on SaharaOne this month-end. She plays the role of Jaya Mathur's mother in the drama.

Jaya, who visited her after the incident, accompanied Sulakshana to the police station.

When the incident happened, Sulakshana had just returned from a late night shoot of Doli Saja Ke.

"I freshened up and was about to go to sleep when suddenly I saw this man in the house. He pounced on me and beat me up badly. I told him to take what he wants and stop beating me. I could not even move or scream for help."

The thief gagged her and then decamped with cash, jewellery and her credit cards. "I guess he realised he couldn't make a big kill so he opened the door and fled through the lift.

When I regained my senses, I screamed but the neighbours were in a deep slumber," she says.

'Watch' out

The actress, who is single, lives alone. "I have never employed domestic help so it is not the doing of a servant.

I have no clue who this person was and how he managed to get past the watchman on to the terrace. It is obvious he had been eyeing my movements," she says.

Sulakshana has also featured in Aroona Irani's earlier show Zameen Se Aasman Tak on SaharaOne, as well as in several Ramanand Sagar's dramas.

A FIR has been filed at the Oshiwara police station. When contacted the cops confirmed that Sulakshana had filed a complaint and investigations were on.

'Indraneil has everything a woman would want in a man'

Barkha Bisht comes clean about her feelings for Indraneil Sengupta.

DEEPALI DHINGRA

Barkha Bisht may have screamed from rooftops earlier about not seeing Indraneil Sengupta, but now, she openly acknowledges that the good-looking model turned actor is more than just a friend. "I wouldn't like to say that we're just friends; that's so cliched," clarifies the dusky beauty, who says that Indraneil and she share a special relationship. "We are certainly more than just friends but beyond that, I can't say much," she adds. As for marriage plans, Barkha believes it is too early to plan for something like that. "I'm not thinking of marriage right now," she says. Not even with Indraneil? "Well, Indraneil is a great guy, he's nice and understanding. He's almost everything a woman would want in a man," is all Barkha's willing to say about her feelings for the man in her life. But even that says a lot! The actor who made a debut on the small screen with Ekta Kapoor's Kitni Mast Hai Zindagi, shared screen space with Indraneil on the sets of Pyar Ke Do Naam, Ek Radha Ek Shyam. The serial went off air a few months back after which Barkha became a Zoom anchor with Popkorn news. "It's good fun anchoring a show because I get to be Barkha Bisht in it and not some character. Earlier I used to get butterflies in my stomach, but now I've got the hang of it," she says. Recently, she acted in Shhh Pphir Koi Hai and says that she had a great time shooting for it. "It was scary because we would shoot late at night and there would be dim lighting on the sets," she recalls. The dusky beauty has recently signed Aroona Irani's new serial Doli Saja Ke, where she would be playing the character of a girl whose father hates her as her mother dies during childbirth. Later, a guy comes into her life and they fall in love. But ask her if she thinks the audience isn't bored of daily soaps and she says, "The Indian audience is not prepared for anything different on television. They crib and criticise the saas-bahu shows but at the end of the day, those are the ones that get the highest TRPs," she says.

"Short skirts really compliment my well toned legsl"

"I prefer simplicity with elegance" - Barkha Bisht

Bootylicious Barkha Bisht did a successful stint in her debut Balaji show, Kitni Mast Hai Zindagi on MTV where she had to don a very glam avatar. But in real life she prefers a very sedate fashion style, "I don't like anything over the top and garish. I prefer simplicity with elegance. I don't follow trends blindly; rather I'd create my own niche," articulates Barkha.

This Punjabi kudi, who has also acted in Kkavyanjali and Kassauti Zindagi Kay, bagged her first lead role in the coveted Rajashri Production's Pyaar Ke Do Naam Ek Radha Ek Shyam (Star Plus) where she got to play three different reincarnations." I loved the costumes of this show as I got to experiment with various fashion genres ethnic (rural ghagra cholis), western (skirts and tops) and Indo-western (kurta with denims).

Barkha who is currently doing Doli Saja Ke (Sahara One) and Popkorn Newz (Zoom) just cannot have enough of the eternal Indian outfit, the saree. "I think Indian women look the sexiest and glamorous when they adorn those nine yards. My choice of fabrics would be crepe and chiffon as they give a real nice fall. As far as the blouse goes, I dig the halter, spaghetti or string variety, "she says. Unlike most modern girls, Barkha loves to self-drape her saree, for the style which it gives can never be replaced by pre-stitched ones.

"If you can carry wild stuff with lan, then sky is the limit" - Barkha with her eye candy Indraneil Sengupta

If one bumps into Barkha at a happening page 3 bash, you will mostly spot her in a pair of jeans and a flashy backless top or a sexy short red number. She adds, "I also love short skirts as they really compliment my well toned legs!"

Barkha does not believe that it's essential to flash skin to look fashionable, "Comfort shouldn't rule vanity! If you don't like to show off your legs, then don't wear minis otherwise you'll end up looking silly. On the other hand, if you can carry wild stuff with lan, then sky is the limit".

Like most women, Barkha too adores bags. While on shoots, she carries huge jute bags, which can house a lot of stuff, and for a party it's a nice small sequenced piece adorned with stones. "Coming to jewellery, I if wear long earrings then my neck goes bare, as I don't want to look over dressed".

Barkha is very meticulous when it comes to repeating her outfits for dos as she knows, if you end up wearing the same outfit twice, you'll invite trouble. "Hence, I take special care to ensure that I don't use the same outfit for at least three to four months. What has really helped though is a mix and match - clubbing an old top with a new bottom and vice-a-versa, and voila, you look different!"

Karishma's negative act in Doli Saja Ke Rakhna!

Karishma Randeva was getting Miss Goody two shoes roles until she broke the image by playing a negative character in India Calling. And now she is all set to enter Aroona Irani's new show Doli Saja Ke Rakhna on Sahara One as a

Karishma Randeva:Negative is the way to go!!

negative lead yet again. Karishma plays a spoilt brat who is responsible for a lot of wrong happenings in the family.
"I play Riddhima who is always after her sister's (played by Barkha) life and treats her like a servant in the house. Eventually, she starts going around with Ali Hassan and finds out that he is already married and how the story unfolds further," says the cute actor who will don a classy and chic (skirts and corset look) in the show.

So, what made the actor take up a negative role yet again after India Calling?
"I loved doing a negative role and before that I was generally offered the sweet, girl next door kind of roles. And when Aroonaji called me for this show, I didn't ask her too many questions and simply agreed to doing it. I've worked with her earlier in Rabba Ishq Na Hove and had a great time working then" points out Karishma who has been working for DSKR for the past one month.

Karishma is also hosting John Aur Kaun on Hungama which is on the verge of completion besides that which she is also doing a cameo in Bhabhi. The character in Bhabhi is already on air where she plays a village belle "My character name is Soni and it is inspired from the film Henna. The lead actor falls in love with me after losing his memory. I play a typical village girl who wears Punjabi suits and juti's and ties her hair into plaits," chirps Karishma who began her career with Hello Dollie.
For now, the actor wants to concentrate on doing some quality ad films besides television shows in hand.

My film is about a village where all the women are prostitutes: Manoje Biddvai

So, what's happening on the professional front?
Well professionally I am doing my first Hindi feature film called 'Riwaaz'. It is an issue based movie and a very interesting story. It is about a village where all the women are prostitutes and all the men are pimps. I am playing the main lead, a city boy who goes to the village for his friend's sister's wedding. Very hard hitting and volatile subject.

Who is your co-star in the movie?
There is a new girl Ritishaa. There are three girls actually including her. The others are Meghna Naidu & Saadhika Randhawaa. Also there is my real father-in-law Rajendra Gupta in the role of my father in the film. Then there is Deepti Naval, Yashpal Sharma and Alok Nathjee. You can say there is a list of veterans in the movie.

Have you been keeping a distance from television projects?
Not really. I was actually been busy with this film but from May 7 my new show is coming up on Sahara One. It is called 'Babul Ki Bitiya Chali Doli Saja Ke' produced by Aruna Irani. Here Barkha Bisht is paired opposite me. We have been shooting for this show for very long but due to World Cup it was postponed. Finally it's coming on air now.

What about the actors leaving and coming in the show?
Well, see it's a TV show and things of this sort happen occasionally.

As it is a daily soap and you took a very short break post marriage, how will you manage time for your personal life?
That's the reason we took a break in January. We travelled across Thailand. We went to Pataya, Phuket and Bangkok. We had a blast actually.

Then don't you think days will become busier and hectic for you, once your show comes on air? You know how are things with a daily soap?
See, it depends from person to person. Everybody has his/her own capacity to deliver. I would say that this hoopla of hectic schedules in television is created by media. The so called hectic timings were there in television before too and I have very well gone through such conditions. However, for this show we have been shooting since long, hence have sufficient episodes in bank.

I have also heard about a show called 'Shaadi Street', are you doing any such thing?
Yeh it is a show produced by Deepti Bhatnagar. It is a one hour weekly show made for Star Plus. As I have heard, it is definitely going on air in June.
