Chapter 10

As I fix my earring, I look at myself in the mirror once more. After this I would no longer be just Antara Kaul, I would be someone's to be wife. It was a thought that had never crossed my mind. Sure I had thought of my marriage but never in this way. It was a different kind of feeling but whatever it was, I had to ignore it and go along with everything.

I walk down the stairs with Rukhsana, nervous. I look around the room and spot my dad. I put on my best smile and head make it to the bottom where Raghu is standing. He smiles and we walk to where his parents are standing.

"Antara, bahut aachi lag rahi ho," Aunty says, giving me a kiss on my forehead. I smile and look at my Papa. All of this is for him, remember that Antara. "Chalo beta, ring ceremony shuru kare?" Aunty asks. I nod slightly and Aunty leads us to the couch where we both sit. I look down at my feet, not trusting myself to look anywhere else. "Antara, apna haath aage karo," Aunty says.

I slowly look up at Raghu and extend my hand towards him hesitantly. He takes my small hand and looks at me as if he was asking me if I was sure. I nod slightly and he takes the ring from his mom and slips it onto my finger. My eyes are glued to that ring. It was the symbol of a new relationship that I had just formed, one that I didn't want to but rather had to.

"Antara, ab tum Raghu ko angothi pehano," my mom says. I extend my hand to Antara and she takes it hesitantly. I know how nervewracking this was for her. It was the same for me. But we had to make it through, for Antara's dad. She slips the ring on and everyone claps. I fake a smile, pretending I was happy and Antara does the same. I stand up and Mach Mach comes with his camera, telling me and Antara to smile. Antara stands up next to me and we smile looking at the camera. I try to forget the situation at the moment and think of things the way they were before any of this happened. Antara and I are still friends and nothing can change that.

As I sit in front of my mirror, taking off my jewelry, my eye catches ahold of the ring once again. I look at it closely. It a simple diamond ring, nothing fancy. It was something that I would wear, Raghu knew that. I wasn't big on that fancy stuff. For a second, I just wanted to forget everything that had happened and be friends with Raghu again. Just friends, nothing else. But it just wasn't possible... or was it? I wasn't even sure what was happening in my life anymore. My feels were all jumbled up and I felt weird. I didn't want to deal with this anymore.

"Antara, aaj raat main yehi rahoongi, theek hai na?" Rukhsana asks walking into my room. "Haan, theek hain," I say. "I think you need some girl time Antara, come on, let's do something fun," she says. "Like what?" I ask. "Movie night! Just like the old times, come on," she says. We plop down on my bed and Rukhsana turned on the TV. This was just what I needed at the moment, a distraction.

The next morning, Aunty came over to visit me. "Antara, hum logo ne shaadi ke tareeq nikal li hai," she says. "Kab ki tareeq hai?" I ask. I couldn't decide if I would be happier if the wedding would be early or later. Either way, I couldn't avoid it. "Beta, it's in three days, and there isn't another one for a good 3 months. I know that it's quick but you know..." she says, leaving her sentence incomplete. I understood where aunty was coming from. 3 days... 3 days and then I would be Raghu's wife.

"Tum dono aaj bahar kyun nahi chale jaate?" Aunty says. "Nahi Aunty, Papa ka khayal kaun rakhega?" I say. "Beta main hoon na, main rehloongi Bhaisaab ke paas. Tum, Raghu, Mach Mach aur Rukhsana kahin bahar ghoom aao," she insisted. I agreed and went to go tell Rukhsana. She told Mach Mach and Raghu and we agreed to meet in half an hour. "What are we going to do though? I'm not really in the mood for anything," I say, sitting on the bed. "It's ok Antara, we'll figure something out," she says. "By the way, when are you and Mach Mach getting married?" I ask. "Humari shaadi mein abhi bahut waqt hai, phele teri aur Raghu ki shaadi karani hai," she says.

There it was again... the topic of our marriage. "Can we not talk about that? I want today to be a somewhat normal day, probably the last one before my marriage," I say. "Ok, now hurry up and get ready, we have to go," she says, pulling me up off of my bed. I groan but get up and get ready.
