Chapter 15

The mehndi ceremony started with a whole bunch of dancing and sounds of laughter. Di was brought down and the lady started to apply mehndi on her. "Antara, tum bhi aakar mehndi lagwalo na," Payal said. "Nahi Di, main baad mein lagwalongi," I said.

It was near the end of the function when I finally got mehndi on my hands. I was looking towards the stairs and saw Raghu coming downstairs. "Aap ki mehndi mein kiss ka naam likhna hain?" the lady asked. "Raghu?" I said. What is he doing here? This was a ladies only function. He wasn't supposed to be here. The lady finished the mehndi and I got up and went to Raghu. "Tum yahan kya kar rahe ho?" I asked. "Mujhe pyaas lagi thi toh main pani peene aa gaya tha," he said. "Tum ne mehndi lagwai hain?" he asked. "Yeah, dekho" I said. I stuck my hands out to show him. "Miss Kaul, teri mehndi mein mera naam kya kar raha hain?" he asked. "Meri mehndi mein tumara naam kyun hoga?" I asked. "Khud hi dekh lo," he said. I looked at my hands and saw that on the side, Raghu's name was written there. "What? Tumara naam meri mehndi mein kya kar raha hain?" I asked. I remembered when the lady asked me what name to write, I was thinking about him and accidentally said his name. "Oh, no, uss ne tumara naam likh diya?" I said. "Koi baat nahi, I don't mind. Tumare haton pe mera naam accha lagta hain," he said. Before I could blush anymore, I changed the topic. "Woh... Tume paani chaiye tha na?" I asked. "Haan," he said. "Toh phir chalo, kitchen mein," I said.

"Tume kuch chaiye?" I asked her, as we walked into the kitchen. "Haan, woh mujhe bhi pyaas lagi hain," she said. "Yeh lo," I said, handing her a glass of water. "Mehndi," she said. "Oh, right," I said. I took the glass towards her lips and helped her to drink the water. There was a drop off water on her lips. I cleaned it off with my thumb without taking my eyes away from hers.

He gently cleaned the water from my lips without moving his gaze from my eyes. I wished that I could just look into his eyes all day long. Suddenly, I realized that his hand was still on my lips and I quickly moved away. "Woh tume wapas upar chale jaana chaiye," I said. "Tum chati ho ki main wapas jao?" he asked. "Huh?" I asked, confused. "Matlab tume bhook lage gi, toh tume khana kaun khilega?" he asked. "Oh, par tum neeche nahi re sakte, yeh ladies only function hain. Aur waise bhi, mujhe bhook nahi hain," I said. "Ok, toh main jao?" he asked. "Haan, tum jao, bye," I said and walked back into the hall.

"Galti se hi sahi, par mera naam toh tumare mehndi mein aa hi gaya. Matlab, hum ek doosre ke liye hi bane hain," I said, while thinking about what just happened in the kitchen. I hit my self on the head and turned on my side and fell asleep.

"Haan Mom, main parso Di ke saath Mumbai jaa rahi hoon," I said on the phone to my mom. "Apna khyal rakhna beta, Mumbai bahut bara sher hain," she said. "Haan mom. Main apna pura khayal rakhongi," I said. "Acha ab bahut raat ho gayi hain, tu soja," she said. "Haan, good night mom," I said and cut the call. I lay back and looked up at the celling. I was going to Mumbai, the city of dreams. I was going there to complete my dad's dream of me becoming a doctor. Mumbai was going to be a lot of fun. Tomorrow night is the wedding and the next day we leave for Mumbai. Kitna maaza aayega, I thought. A new city, a new family and lots of new experiences.
