TWENTY ONE
Antara had a fun packed day she was able to finish of her project and hand in her assignment on time giving her a much needed break. She spent the afternoon hanging out with her friends planning the theme of their next big exhibition. Antara had her work presented at a number of exhibition before but this was different this was one of the country's biggest Youth Art Exhibitions all part of the Youth Festival that took place every year. The festival was held in every major city and attracted hundreds of people nationally and internationally. Antara knew that this was the best opportunity to show case her talent and be recognized.
As the day was coming to an end she was becoming all too aware of the looming call she was going to receive from raghu. Antara reached home to find everyone out. Rukku had gone out with machmach - no surprise there and her parents had gone to the temple . Antara took the opportunity to do some cleaning, the apartment wasn't very big and with four people staying in it and not to forget rukku's wedding shopping everything seemed to be everywhere.
By the time antara had finished everything was spotless, she was just about to sit down when she heard the key turn. Geeta and ashok had returned 'are you sure we're in the right flat' ashok joked, geeta was pleasantly surprised she walked up to antara and gave her a big hug looks like you have had a busy afternoon. 'Have you eaten?' geeta asked as she walked towards the kitchen, she knew as much as antara loved food she didn't like eating alone 'No...I'm starving' antara shouted.
'dad, you know the youth festival is starting soon and we have to put together a theme for the art exhibition I was wondering if you could help me' antara looked at ashok with a sheepish smile, she hated brainstorming and ashok was always good at giving her ideas. Her dad started to laugh as he shook his head 'do you even have to ask? Of course I will help you, come sit' he said tapping on the sofa beside him. As antara went to get her note pad she heard her phone vibrate it was a message from raghu even a text message was physiologically sending her out of sync.
Hi, I am running a little late would it be ok to call you at 8?
Antara knew that stalling or making up an excuse to get out of talking to him would not help, it was better she spoke to him and got it over and done with.
Hi, yes 8 is fine
geeta was busy cooking and antara was picking her dads brain for ideas when the house phone rang. It was Naani, geeta spent the next ten minutes engrossed in conversation antara paid no attention all everyone ever talked about was the wedding - it was definitely wedding overload.
Geeta bid farewell to Naani and came into the living room. 'antara that was Naani, rukku is still at RM they have brought a few outfits for you and want you to go round to try them on' 'What Now? At this time, mummy I have too much to do can it not wait until the weekend?' antara moaned, she was in no mood to be travelling across town to try on dresses more importantly she was in no mood to have a face to face conversation with the monster turned schizo having to have a phone conversation was going to be bad enough. 'antara I am not asking you, I am telling you be ready raghu will pick you up on his way home' antara shot a look at her mum if her eyes could widen anymore they definitely would have popped out 'No' she screamed making geeta and ashok stop in their tracks antara quickly realized that came out a little too aggressive 'mum...I mean ok I will go but I don't need to him to pick me up, I am old enough to go by myself' geeta shook her head at her daughter, she was always going to be that little extra. 'antara, he is coming to pick you up, no arguments...I suggest you go and get ready' antara huffed and walked towards her room in a strop.
She saw her phone flashing it was another message from raghu
Hi seems like there has been a change of plan, I'll see you soonJ
'What the hell...what's with the smiley face? Urggghhh this is not happening to me' antara started talking to herself as she got her bag ready and put on her jacket. She didn't bother to get changed she was still wearing her black denim jeans and red top. She had her hair tied up in a pony tail - in short she totally looked the part of a stroppy teenager being forced to do something against her will.
It wasn't long before she heard the doorbell. She heard her mum and dad greet raghu. When antara walked out she saw raghu standing by the entrance admiring the picture frames - pictures of her of when she was younger. 'Ahem' antara cleared he throat to get his attention raghu looked up at her and without any control over his reaction raghu blurted out a 'wow' making antara blush almost to match her red top. Raghu looked behind her to say bye to her parents and then led the way out to his car.
As always he opened the door for her, as she fastened her seat belt raghu started the car and drove off. 'you haven't changed much' he said in a soft voice giving her a quick glance before looking at the road ahead 'how do you mean?' 'I mean from when you were younger, I was looking at your pictures, you are still as cute' as soon as he said that antara choked on the air that stopped mid-way 'excuse me' she managed to say still trying to get her air flowing again. Raghu found it hard to fight back his laugh, antara continued to look at him completely dazed. It wasn't long before they reached RM - before she got out the car she turned towards him 'raghu...you wanted to?' raghu gave her a lopsided smile setting of butterflies in antara's stomach. 'I am sure you won't take forever with what shruti has planned and if I know machmach and rukku they won't be In a rush to end the evening...so am sure I will be able to grab you for a short period of time' antara just about managed to register what he was saying she was too busy losing herself into his eyes, they had never looked so bright, she hadn't actually noticed the colour they were like...like caramel. Raghu had not failed to notice the way antara was looking at him which made him smile even more 'antara' he shook her shoulder gently bring her out of her little day dream. antara started to blush not really knowing what her response should be she quickly said 'yes, of course...I mean anytime' and turned almost leaping out of the car.
They created quite the party, they indulged in food, soft drinks and had fun trying on various outfits, raghu and machmach sat on the side rolling their eyes at them having their own fun. Antara slumped herself on the sofa too tired to try on anymore outfits as she did she noticed a file on the table title 'Youth Festival' she picked it up and asked shruti what it was. 'Oh that, RNN Designs is sponsoring the fashion show, raghu is leading on the project, I think they are hoping to recruit a few interns' 'oh really, that sounds good' antara was quite impressed with the work that raghu was going to be doing to help young students. 'Hey are you not taking part? I thought with the Art Academy you would be showcasing some of your work' shruti inquired. 'Yes I am we have an exhibition, we are currently working on ideas...I am at a loss though still haven't got anything concrete, as a matter of fact I was working with Abu before I came brainstorming ideas' raghu had heard what antara said not making it obvious he casually got up and joined in with what the ladies were doing.
Shruti looked lost in thought and then suddenly turned around in excitement 'I have a brilliant idea, why don't you base your theme on Indian culture, I mean look around you every region in the country has its own culture, its own tradition, its dialect and most of all its own attire. You're focal point could be on representing Indian women of today' antara's face lit up 'hey not bad shruti, I think you may have something there' shruti looked on in glee. 'Think about it antara you could work with raghu seeing he is leading on the fashion show you could rub ideas with him' antara gulped, the idea seemed flawless up until now, she looked up at raghu who looked pleasantly surprised by his sisters idea, antara on the other hand did not feel comfortable with the idea of having to work with raghu, there were too many horrible memories associated with their working relationship.
'I..I don't know shruti, I mean I love your idea and it is definitely something I can go by but working with RNN Designs..I don't know if it is a good idea, I mean my work is purely based on art and painting its poles apart from designing fabric and outfits' antara was trying to avoid eye contact with raghu as she tried to put forward a plausible argument. 'Yes I agree, but you used to work as designer with raghu and from what I hear a very good one, that would surely work in your favour...' shruti wasn't able to finish her sentence as raghu stepped in 'I think it's a brilliant idea, you have enough time to do your research before you start working or putting together your stuff for the exhibition, and I am sure ...no I am positive RNN Designs will help you with what you need and similarly you will be able to benefit us' raghu had spoken like a true business man he spoke with such confidence and conviction it was hard to say to say no. 'I'll think about it, I have to put the idea to the rest of my group, it's not a solo project...I mean if they agree I will let you know, but thank you' antara knew Sara would jump at the chance she was smitten by raghu's looks and persona she would do anything to be around him but she wasn't sure if Sahil would agree he didn't take a liking to raghu, having seen how disturbed antara was around him.
As predicted Sara was all in, she hadn't let antara finish what she was saying all she heard was raghu and was all for the idea, antara couldn't help but smile, she understood the attraction but Sara didn't know raghu like she did but then again how much did she really know raghu herself. She thought about calling Sahil but decided it would be better to do it face to face. She turned over to switch her lamp off getting ready to sleep, as soon as her eyes started to drop she was awaken by the sound of her mobile vibrating. It was a message from raghu, it made her smile involuntarily.
Hi, wasn't able to talk hopefully will be able to soon. I hope you and your friends seriously consider the project idea. If nothing else at least it will give us a chance to work together again.
Antara felt her stomach do a little summersault; she sat up in her bed cross legged leaning her head in her hand. She really didn't know what to write back, she loved shruti's idea but didn't want to be work with raghu.
I am not sure working with you is the best idea, like I said I will speak to my group and let you know either way.
antara replied back honestly.
