Beyond digitization, these are the best Indian media stocks.

Often billed as the next great investing opportunity, the Indian media space has flattered to deceive, with the promised "digitization revolution" yet to accrue any significant benefits. Investors are better off playing niche themes such as regional print newspapers and radio companies for better returns, an analysis by IDFC says.

Investors are better off playing niche themes such as regional print newspapers and radio companies for better returns, an analysis by IDFC says. Here's a summary.

Investment argument

With about 12 crore households in the country having access to cable and satellite (C&S) services (the world's second largest market), and with 350 crore cinemas that broadcast over 1,000 movies every year, the India media & entertainment (M&E) industry generates revenues of only USD 15 billion (or 1 percent of world share), compared to USD 120 billion for China, USD 190 billion of Japan and USD 500 billion for the US.

However, the tide is expected to turn, with the Indian M&E industry slated to grow at a compounded growth of over 14 percent between 2013 and 2018, compared to less than 10 percent growth over the past five years.

Besides the favourable macros -rising per capita incomes, a growing middle class moving towards higher discretionary spends, a young population with changing lifestyles and aspirations and underpenetration in the media market will also help accelerate growth.

Penetration currently stands at 30 percent for print among literate population, 60 percent of households for cable & satellite (C&S) TV and 13 percent for FM radio.

The increasing advertising growth is expected to benefit digital advertising the most (which is expected to double its share from 8.3 percent to 14.7 percent but there are no listed plays in the segment.

Broadcast and distribution

After digitization was mandated by the Indian government (analog cable TV is expected to be shut off in India by 2014), it was expected to prevent leakages within the system and bump up average revenue per user (ARPU) from Rs 180 (about 80 percent of which was typically not-declared) to Rs 200.

However, deep-rooted mistrust between multiple-systems operators (MSOs) and local cable operators (LCOs), who want a larger share of ARPU, has resulted in MSOs collecting only 33 percent of ARPU (Rs 65) as against their equitable share of 65 percent.

While lack of scale, no control over last mile and lesser-than-ideal penetration for the high-margin broadband business has led to limitations to the cable TV business model.

As a result, IDFC is neutral on distributors such as Hathway (price target: Rs 294) and Den Networks (Rs 165). It only has a buy rating on Dish TV (Rs 68) in view of traction in subscriber addition and expected lower licence fee regime, which lends longer-term visibility.

Meanwhile, for broadcasters, digitization has come as a double-edged sword: it ensures no platform can deny carriage, but has worsened viewership fragmentation by easing bandwidth and leading to launches of multiple channels. For instance, in the late 80s, Mahabharat (the most viewed show on Doordarshan) garnered a TRP share of 70 percent, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi notched up a share of 20 percent in 2004-05 while top grosser Diya Aur Baati Hum got a share of 3.7 percent in 2013.

To protect their share, broadcasters are launching more and more channels, in line with Zee CMD Punit Goenka's call of "lead fragmentation or get fragmented". This will lead to further fragmentation.

Assuming subscription revenues are divided equally among the three participants in the value chain (LCO, MSO and broadcaster), the broadcaster's collection would be Rs 60 per household per month. At 12 crore pay-TV households, this amounts to Rs 8,640 crore for FY13, which is about 57 percent higher than broadcasters' current collection (of Rs 5,500 crore. This implies broadcasters collected about 64 percent of their estimated fair share.

Assuming digitization plays out in three years, subscription revenues would register a CAGR of about 16 percent over FY13-16E. IDFC believes this rate is more realistic than the 20-25 percent levels that the Street is currently building in.

IDFC is bullish on Zee as both advertising and revenue subscription as buoyed by its investments in new channels, it believes FY16E/17E will be strong after a dull FY15E.

Print

Advertising for newspapers in the US has fallen at a compounded rate of 8 percent from 2002 to 2012 as the lucrative classifieds business shifted from print to the Internet and as readership fell as people shifted to consuming their news online.

The Indian print industry's dependence on classified advertising is low, especially for the Hindi/ vernacular medium -- classifieds contribute about 20 percent to India's English print advertising revenues but only 8-9 percent for Hindi/vernacular print.

As a result, English newspapers are more vulnerable to rising influence of online advertising. The time horizon of any negative impact on the Hindi/vernacular print medium from the Internet would be longer.

IDFC has a buy rating on DB Corp (which publishes Dainik Bhaskar) and Jagran Prakashan (which publishes Dainik Jagran) as it believes that low internet penetration in Hindi speaking states, dependence on local advertisers (who lack too many options), an unparalleled reach in Tier I and II towns and reader engagement will result in revenue growth of 14 percent (double that of print) even as newsprint cost remains a risk.

Radio

Meanwhile, the radio industry is increasingly gaining prominence with its advertising revenue for private FM slated to grow 18.1 percent over the next five years.

TRAI's Phase II policy (FY05) changed the fixed-fee regime (licence fee) to a revenueshare model, which paved the way for better profitability for private FM players. It expanded the reach of private FM by taking it to 87 towns and cities from 12 earlier.

Phase III would allow private players to own multiple frequencies (radio stations) in the same town. It would also allow airing of news sourced from All India Radio even as the industry hopes that private news will be allowed soon.

The new norms would expand the listener base and drive content differentiation. It will also increase the licence period from 10 years (under Phase II) to 15 years. This would improve visibility of reaping profits from investments. The number of towns under coverage will triple. We expect Phase III auctions to be completed by end FY15.

Unlike the print medium, which has been affected by the rise of Internet (especially in the Western world), radio has held on. It has, in fact, been able to increase its listener base. Taking the US as a proxy for the Western world, we highlight that despite high broadband penetration of about 80 percent in households and smartphone penetration of ~50 percent among individuals; radio listeners grew by 0.3 percent in 2013. As a medium, radio has proved to be more robust than print.

IDFC has an outperform rating on Entertainment Network India Ltd (ENIL) (TP: Rs 545), which owns the Radio Mirchi brand.

MUMBAI: In the week 33 of TAM TV ratings, Zee TV, Colors and Sab have emerged as clear winners. Zee TV, the only channel that shed numbers last week notched up taking its tally to 453,012 GVTs, up from 414,540 GVTs.

Maximum of Zee's properties witnessed a rise in the ratings. The channel's famous property - Kumkum Bhagya is climbing new heights week after week as it has gained by a huge margin. It reported 8,013 TVTs, up from 7,560 TVTs. Its historical show - Jodha Akbar has become the second highest gainer as it recorded 7,544 TVTs, up from 7,332 TVTs and Qubool Hai came third with 6,216 TVTs, up from 5,428 TVTs.

The second highest gainer this week stood Colors at number two. It observed 410,774 GVTs, up from 403,053 GVTs. Two of its properties witnessed a hike in the ratings. Thus Sasural Simar Ka noted 6,193 TVTs, up from 5,699 TVTs and The Anupam Kher Show reported 2,103 TVTs, up from 1,864 TVTs.

After struggling at the bottom of the chart for several weeks, Sab regained its number five position. It garnered 278,215 GVTs, up from 277,018 GVTs. Tu Mere Agal Bagal Hai and Lapataganj have witnessed growth in the ratings by garnering 1,025 TVTs, up from 968 TVTs and 1,716 TVTs, up from 1,655 TVTs respectively. Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah continued to remain the chart leader as it scored 5,472 TVTs, down from 6,552 TVTs.

Coming back to the chart leader, Star Plus clocked 688,618 GVTs, down from 711,648 GVTs. The channel's chart leader Diya Aur Baati Hum scored 10,696 TVTs, up from 10,024 TVTs. Saathiya Saath witnessed a tremendous rise and reported 9,455 TVTs, up from 7,150 TVTs, Mahabharat observed a fall in the viewership and noted 8,504 TVTs, down from 9,110 TVTs and Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai stood at 7,367 TVTs, up from 7,326 TVTs.

Life OK continues to occupy the number four position. It observed 301,994 GVTs, down from 311,640 GVTs. Thus, Shapath recorded 2,217 TVTs, down from 2,779 TVTs, Savdhan India reported 2,721 TVTs, up from 2,690 TVTs and Laut Aao Trisha stood at 1,566 TVTs, down from 1,654 TVTs.

Back to number six, Sony Entertainment Television (SET) recorded 262,647 GVTs, down from 278,432 GVTs. Thus, CID, the channel's leader scored 4,053 TVTs, down from 4,328 TVTs and Maharana Veer Pratap rated 2,906 TVTs, down from 3,446 TVTs. The much hyped show - Yudh captured 708 TVTs, up from 703 TVTs.

GEC Watch: KBC pushes Sony up to No. 4; Star Plus loses viewership

Star Plus lost 130 GTVM but held its leadership position. Sony added 103 GTVM on the back of KBC in Week 34 of TAM 2014. Zee TV acquires top two fiction slots

Star Plus' gross viewership went down by 130 GTVM in Week 34 of TAM 2014. However, the channel maintained its leadership position. Star Plus' loss was Sony's gain as the later added 103 TVM in its gross viewership and jumped to fourth position from last week's sixth position.

On the other hand, Zee TV continued to grow on the back of its fiction shows. The channel acquired the top two slots - Jodha Akbar at No. 1 and Kumkum Bhagya at No. 2 - this week while it was the slot leader in the 8 PM - 10 PM time band.

According to data sourced from TAM subscribers for Week 34 of TAM 2014 (August 17 - August 23) for CS 4+, HSM markets, Star Plus was followed by Zee TV at No. 2 and Colors at No. 3. Sony jumped two positions to No. 4 pushing Life OK to No. 5 and SAB TV to No. 6.

Star Plus recorded a gross viewership of 559 GTVMs, a drop of 130 GTVM from last week. The channel's relative share was at 23.87% (last week 689 GTVM and 28.76 of relative share).

Zee TV continued to grow this week and recorded a gross viewership of 464 GTVM with 19.81% relative share (last week 453 GTVM and 18.91% relative share).

Colors too lost eyeballs this week and slipped to 377 GTVM with a relative share of 16.10% (last week 411 GTVM and 17.15% of relative share).

Sony gained big in the launch week of Kaun Banega Crorepati and the channel added 103 TVM to its gross viewership. The channel jumped to No. 4 position with 366 GTVM and a relative share of 15.63% (last week 263 GTVM and 10.98% of relative share).

Life OK slipped to No. 5 position this week. The channel recorded a gross viewership of 288 GTVM and a relative share of 12.30% (last week 302 GTVM and 12.60% of relative share).

SAB TV slipped to No. 6 position this week with a gross viewership of 288 GTVM. The channel had a relative share of 12.60% (last week 278 TVM and 11.60% of relative share).

KBC works its charm, Sony number four in TAM TV ratings

MUMBAI: The charm of Amitabh Bachchan has worked for Sony Entertainment Television (SET). And it's visible in the TAM TV ratings of week 34. The Hindi general entertainment channel (GEC) that launched the eighth season of Kaun Banega Crorepati on 17 August has finally come out from being at the bottom of the ratings chart, to number four.

What's even more welcoming for the channel is the fact that the new format for KBC has been accepted by the audience. The inaugural episode got 8,956 TVTs, while subsequent episodes delivered 5,216 TVTs.

Sony garnered 366,282 GVTs, up from 262,647 GVTs. Apart from KBC, what worked wonders for the channel is its historic property - Maharana Veer Pratap which observed 3,286 TVTs, up from 2,906 TVTs.

On the other hand, Life OK, which slipped to number five position, managed 287,861 GVTs, down from 301,994 GVTs. The channel's hot property - Savdhan India lost eyeballs and scored 2,473 TVTs, down from 2,721 TVTs, Laut Aao Trisha registered 1,435 TVTs, down from 1,566 TVTs and Gustakh Dil managed 1,365 TVTs, down from 1,530 TVTs.

According to the TAM TV ratings provided by the channel, the gainers this week are Zee TV at number two with 464,660 GVTs, up from 453,012 GVTs and Sab at number six faces neck-to-neck competition with Life OK as it records 287,686 GVTs, up from 278,215 GVTs.

At Zee, maximum properties witnessed a rise in the ratings. The channel's famous property - Kumkum Bhagya is climbing new heights week after week and reported 8,093 TVTs, up from 8,013 TVTs, historical show - Jodha Akbar noted 8,949 TVTs, up from 7,544 TVTs Jamai Raja witnessed 6,688 TVTs, up from 5,327 TVTs and Aur pyar Ho Gaya stood at 4,676 TVTs, up from 4,418 TVTs.

On the other hand, for Sab, Taarek Mehta has been a huge win. It recorded 6,156 TVTs, up from 5,472 TVTs. Balveer registered 2,209 TVTs, up from 2,072 TVTs. On 23 August, the channel aired Sab Ke Anokhe Awards which observed 3,627 TVTs.

Though it lost numbers, Star Plus continues to lead the pack with 559,230 GVTs, down from 688,618 GVTs and Colors at number three stood at 376,579 GVTs, down from 410,774 GVTs.

For Star, all its properties have witnessed a huge drop in the viewership. Thus, the channel's chart leader Diya Aur Baati Hum scored 7,343 TVTs, down from 10,696 TVTs, Saathiya Saath reported 7,179 TVTs, down from 9,455 TVTs and Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai stood at 5,942 TVTs, down from 7,367 TVTs.

Coming back to Colors, Sasural Simar Ka noted 6,060 TVTs, down from 6,193 TVTs. Its non-fiction properties, Jhalak Dikhlaja and Comedy Nights with Kapil witnessed a drop in the ratings and reported 3,879 TVTs, down from 4,799 TVTs and 6,521 TVTs, down from 6,847 TVTs respectively.
