Abhishek is irresponsible

Playing a character that's completely different from you in real life can be a serious challenge but Deepak Wadhva, who essays the character of spoilt brat Abhishek Tiwari, is not complaining. He loves challenges and thinks that life would become dull and aimless without it.

The lad is happy to play an aggressive, angry and irresponsible Abhishek who is born in a rich family. He does not value the hard-earned reputation of his politician father but uses the power and money to his advantage. But in real life, Abhishek has struggled a lot to reach this far. Though hailing from an affluent family in Delhi, the guy in real life chose to make a mark for himself on his own. What kept him going during his lows was his mother's support.

He talks about his journey from modeling to acting and the challenge his on-screen character Abhishek imposed on him as Deepak is nowhere similar to him in real life.

1. What's the most unpredictable thing happened to you in life so far?

The most unpredictable thing that has happened to me is the show itself. The production house happened to see my pictures on a social networking site and sent me a message saying that they would like me to audition for their new show. Thinking it to be yet another frivolous offer, I didn't revert. Also my play titled as Sangam kept me busy. But I took it seriously when the production house got in touch with me for the second time and asked me to send me my video. It was only then that I decided to take it ahead. Everything including my audition, look test and signing of the contract happened in a week's time.

2. Do you believe in planning your life or you leave everything to destiny?

You can't decide for your life but you must certainly understand and know what do you want from it. Like for me, I am clear about making it to Bollywood. I want to do movies. As human beings, we have our limitations. We can't predict our future 12 months down the line. I believe in having a long term vision with short term goals. What's bound to happen is inevitable and unstoppable. I had auditioned for many shows but as suggested by the title Dhoondh Legi Manzil Hamein, the show found me. I was destined to do it.

3. Tell us about your background?

I am from Delhi and my father runs a business. I have two elder brothers and stay in a joint family. I have done my software engineering. I have done events, stood at stalls and shops promoting their products. I have done it all. I am jack of everything and now here to master the art of acting. My life has been full of ups and downs. I too have struggled to reach this far but I have enjoyed every bit of the journey. I think its important for everyone to face the challenges and struggle to achieve goals and reach their destination for struggle and lows in life keeps you grounded. You don't value the luxuries of life if it's served you on the platter without really thriving for it. What you might be taking for granted can be privilege for someone.

4. From modeling to acting, sum up your life. Has it been an unpredictable journey for you?

I would say its been somewhere between predictable and unpredictable. I have decided for my life so far. I wanted to pursue theater and modeling and didn't want to make software engineering my profession. It's been an eventful journey which I had enjoyed thoroughly.

5. Models can't act and can't be expressive is the norm in the industry. Your comment.

It's just about the mind-set of people which they refuse to change but I would call it unfair. Every model is different from the other as they are all different individuals. If they say models can't act, I can cite so many examples of actors who simply can't act to save a life. You can't be judging the entire industry through an individual. Smoking and drinking are synonymous with the fashion and glamour industry but being a model and now an actor I have never smoked or drank in my life so far.

7. Are you politically inclined? Who is your favourite leader?

I completely stay away from politics and don't even read about it. This is quite a contrast as the show is based on politics. That's why I say life is unpredictable as the show found us. The character I play is different for me. It's not a regular sweet, romantic and simple natured guy but is someone who is aggressive and spoilt.

8. How is Abhishek different from Deepak?

Abhishek is carefree, irresponsible, aggressive and a spoilt brat. He is always greedy for money and twists and uses power to his advantage. Deepak on the other hand is responsible, well-behaved, focused and committed to work. The only similarity that can be drawn between the two individuals is that we both love to live our life to the fullest though in a different way. You can't expect Abhishek to be responsible which Deepak is. I am not short-tempered like Abhishek and I value the luxuries of life.

9. Three things that you think will draw the viewers to your show?

Primarily, it's a very different and unique concept. Secondly, we have some really hot looking actors doing the show including me (laughs). Thirdly, viewers can relate and connect with the characters easily. All the characters on the show are poles apart. Abhishek is spoilt, Chander is responsible and intelligent. He talks less but whatever little he talks makes so much sense. Alka is happy-go -lucky girl who decides for herself. The show is for all age-groups and not just the youth.

10. We see so many politicians lobbying for their family members who have no knowledge about politics. Your take on this?

Tell me one place where lobbying doesn't take place. Be it business, politics, sports or any other profession. Son steps in his father's shoes to take his legacy forward. Certainly running a nation is far more serious than running a business but then lobbying is everywhere. I don't support this at all as an individual. This can well serve as an invitation to corruption and at the end its the countrymen who suffer. We have ample incidents in the history of politics of our country including the latest one as Common Wealth Games where even a layman can point out the discrepancies.

11. What measure would you suggest to stop all this?

Give a resignation and let the youth take over. Strict action should be taken against the corrupted individuals so that it becomes an eye-opener for all those who are either tempted to go wrong or who have just started getting corrupted. With the involvement of young politicians will come new ideas and innovative plans which will serve for the development of the nation as a whole.

12. What do you think of the fairer sex participating in the activities outside the domain of their houses?

It feels great to see women progress so much. I respect women and totally support the idea that they are capable of doing everything. Gone are those days when they were merely tagged as home-makers. They have excelled themselves at balancing their professional and personal lives. They are emerging as the decision makers not just at homes but even in the professional world.

13. Who is your biggest critic and support-system?

My dad is my biggest critic and my mother has always stood by me in all my decisions. She had always motivated me to follow my dreams and desires. She never wanted me to compromise with my dreams.

14. How does your family and friends react when they see you on the show?

Well, its just been two days as our show launched on Monday so they don't say much about my character and role. All they say is, "Tu bada sona lag raha hai" (You look great).

15. What's your dream for life?
To hold the Filmfare award for best actor.

Catch the snob Abhishek on Dhoondh Legi Manzil Humein, Monday to Saturday at 9:00 pm on STAR One.
