There was a story I heard that mahadev cursed narayan that narayan's left foot would suffer leprosy disease and inorder to get shaap morsh, narayan has to bath in a special river. The curse was due to narayan sl*gged Raja Bhali into the paathallog.

My question is what is wrong with narayan's act?😕😕

Do this track show on DKDMD?

@joyel, while giving such stories you should mention the source too.

Devi Mahatmya text is same for all, there is nothing like North or South Indian in it. I have read Devi Mahatmya several times. Have never come across such story. Checked up even now. It's not there.
If you've seen it in atv show, then it might be a local falk tale, known in only a particular section. Such stories are added much later. So it can be a fiction. Taking fiction seriously is like taking the entire DKDM seriously with all its ingedients😆

@meenashi

What Iam talking about is I believe an oral temple legend or folktale from South India. I could be wrong but I don't think it has been incorporated into any purans (btw, many of the stories in purans originated as oral legends).

In Tamil Nadu, this legend is important to those who worship Parvati as Mother Baagam Piriyal.

@Joyel, that's what I have mentioned in my earlier post, this may be a local falk tale. This is popular in a part of Tamilnadu. Not all over India. Link given by Kal, supports that fact.
When we talk about Puranas, it's a script in Sanskrit translated in other languages. most of us have them at home. So it's easy to refere at any given time. This story is not in Devi Mahatmya as you've mentioned when I asked for the source. It's a local belief which is popular only in one section.

Joyel,

Since you say you are a Christian- I would like to explain something. Since Hinduism as a religion has existed from time immemorial (at least we believe so), we draw our faith from two aspects-

First- the Vedas / Upanishads / Puranas / the Shrutis and the Smritis which form the bedrock of this religion

Second- the faith and devotion which has led to temples being built in ever nook and corner of this country- each with its own legend and mysticism.

Each and every Rama temple in the country would have you believe that Rama had visited that place during his life time, however improbable it may sound. And since faith is supposed to move mountains (literally in Ramayan's case) no one argues whether it is logical or not.

While the Puranas and Itihaasas are the foundation for the Hindu mythology, countless legends and stories have spawned over the years, each proclaiming the supremacy of one God over another. While they may strengthen and nurture people's faiths, there won't be any Puranic significance. Not that it matters of course unless you go in search of one.

This legend that you have quoted is one such example. I am afraid, this is the first time I am hearing this story- though I come from Tamil Nadu.

Secondly, with a religion that is as old as Hinduism, it is but natural that sectarian beliefs would have cropped up from time to time. Nothing to be apologetic about it.

All religions have been fractured due to ideological beliefs. Hinduism is also no exception and in the past there have been several Vishnavism- vs- Shaivism quarrels. A particular legend can be interpreted in several ways to prove either Vishnu's or Shiva's or Devi's superiority. Narasimha avatar is one such story where followers of each God have tried to show their favourite's greatness.

In the story you have quoted, Mahadev cursing Narayan is surely something concocted by Shaivites (after all Shiva was the araadhya of the Asuras- by extension, Bali Maharaj). And Vaishnavite texts have left no stone unturned to demean Shiva also.
